  • I like Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald , Dina Washington and Nancy Wilson. I don't like Billie Holiday - I think she was way overrated.

  • listen and appreciate why she was called "the divine one".

  • Au bord des larmes

  • Id rather see this whole doc than one clip. Id also like to know where it came from,.

  • No , we always think of you Sarah when we hear a singer , no one comes close.

  • OMG! What a voice!

  • I am mortified that until this moment, I never realized that the Amazing Sarah Vaughn accompanied herself on the piano. I hang my head in shame = as Mr. Ekstine said, 'she came equipped'. I do know she loved HIM!

  • There are many great singers, let's face it. But for me only one of them makes goosebumps run up my arms whenever I hear her. My lovely Sassy.xx

  • Her voice is ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!

  • Outstanding....everything she ever did was billiant.

  • There is a video out there about her life story, I want it, where can I get it?

  • What is "musical genius"? SARAH VAUGHAN!

  • She stands alone.

  • Anybody that does not appreciate good music makes me wanna slap'em!!!!

  • We can all argue subjectively about our favorite singer.....but this is the most unusual and beautiful rendition of this song I have ever heard!

  • The wonderful teena maries main influence and it shows so much lady t certainly had it too R.I.P to them both xx

  • I think Sass would be apaulled to have been turned into a icon. I believe she did her best so others would have a future in this wonderful artform we call Jazz. If there's anyone out there who feels they should attempt this I wish you luck because with all the copywrites and icon making going on you'll have your work cut out for you.

  • Everybody!!! This is the original Anita Baker.

  • Her voice was not the only think that was great about Sarah Vaughan. It was her decision making as she sang. For her to think of singing the same phrase in real low register then repeat it higher then even higher then rephrase it . . . just genius. Genius!

  • Pure velvet !!

  • Sassy forever!

  • i melt when i hear this women

  • First time I heard her play the piano. Wow!

  • Man what's happened to this kinda music, most of the songs nowadays are so ugly and fake! :(

  • All I can say is INCREDIBLE.

  • @beeshor1 Sarah was always at the top for me. As a 10 year old boy, in complete awe. Broken Hearted Melody is one of 'best songs ever'.

  • My FAVORITE rendition of this song! I love her vocal style and arrangement! This is also before my time, lol!

  • The only one who can belt it that way... great voice lives on..not my time but I appreciate a very good singer like her.

  • wonderful, Thank you for posting this. Always when I hear her I am touched deeply.

  • Unusual with piano and a superb voicing!

  • Oh will you think of me SARAH. Happy Birthday Divine One.

  • There just are no words...

    Happy Birthday Sarah... (3/27/24)

  • You have made my day with the posting of this video. Thank you.

    I Miss you Sarah!!

  • love this vocalist-miss her

  • This woman is THE VOICE...

  • I had no idea she could play jazz piano like that!! Wow! With her mezmerizing voice, I'm in awe!

  • She really didn't need accompianment when she was at the piano. Her and the piano are mesmerizing...

  • A Jazz Historic moment !

    Vave-trombonist Judy.

    NEW YORK CITY.

  • My question is why is Mariah Carey considered such a goddess when Sarah is obviously the first mezzo who has a range of incredible length and power?

  • .. because people do forget all the great singers have been. they all should be sent to school what singing is. there is a wide range of somuch good singers in the 40ies, 50ies and 60ies.. and everything is concentrating at "girlies" like carey or madonna or so... well..... this is another class of "working" regards eva

  • I say the same about opera! Everyone is like "OMIGOSH Sarah Brightman" etc and there are those who have the power to push her off the the stage! examples: Magdalena Kozena, Tuva Semmingsen, Inger Dam-Jensen, Randi Stene, and Cecelia Bartoli!! my list goes on....

  • i only can agree with you 100%!! if you know the "upperclass" of singers than you will have no understanding for singers like p.e. madonna or this kind. nothing aganst this music, but the hype is too much.. only to ly nacked in bed would not be a qualification for singing... my opinion..... and with opera singers sure the same anna kournikova will not be the only one who can sing......

  • @dangmills

Well, Mariah's technically a contralto, her tessitura is in her lower register. Sarah Vaughn is one of her influences.

  • Just beautiful.

  • Anyone from ANY musical genre can't appreciate the total talent and MASTERY Sarah had of and song she would grace with her presence. She had it all. If you want to be a singer, LEARN PIANO AND MUSIC THEORY, which would include harmony, ear training and arranging! Sarah could play any tune she knew on the piano. Yes, she was a TOTAL musician in every respect and ready for anything, not to mention one of the greatest singers ever.

  • @DrumTchr muy respetable su comentario, pero la manera en que maneja la voz es inigualable como entra de los graves a los agudos sin perder el romanticismo de lo nítido de su voz

  • Goose bumps up the arms down the back ...can't stop 'em everytime I hear this gorgeous lady..the best female singing in the world ever...

  • @priapus56 I am in total agreement my friend

  • prezenta rafinata

  • The Queen! Such an incredible singer. Thanks!

  • The true vocalist/musician!

  • I saw this when it first aired on the Dick Cavett show, by this time I was a devout follower, but when she sat down at the piano and belted out this tune. it took me to another place, Sarah I think of you more than once in a while, it's more like everyday. I have said the only thing I want put on my headstone when I die is, "He Loved Sarah Vaughan"

  • reminds me to Rochelle, from Everybody hates Chris!!!

    Awesome performance

  • Sassy, truly the "Divine one"..

  • She's wonderful!

  • Her voice really was Awesome!!

  • i love her. I know Amy Winehouse always says she loves Sarah Vaughan so much, so apparently she's still influencing even though she has passed away.

  • Spectacular range, brilliant phrasing... Sarah is one of the greatest, up there with Ray Charles.

  • absolutely enchanting!

  • There will never be another Sarah Vaughn. Such a unique talent, such musicianship. Her timing and phrasing are indeed divine, and she hardly has to open her mouth to make all those beautiful sounds...

  • She is singing as one instrument and playing the piano as another one....check the chord changes--no one ever did this as well as the Divine one! WOW!

  • OMG! What kinda music have I been listening to when there is this?! She soooo has a new listener! God Bless Her

  • She sings her style with such ease!

  • Sarah Vaughan is a legend, you do not have any of those today in current music on the radio, it's all Trash..Period!

    Sarah was Amazing!

  • I concur heartily - absolute trash today!

Such a talent as hers seems to be a rarity.

  • I wish the ladies that came before Aretha Franklin and Roberta Flack played the piano more..This is the first time I have every seen Sarah play for herself...Wish Dinah Washington had done it more playing also..I think it is beautiful when excellent voice is matched with excellent self piano playing!!!

  • I love her range... she's awesome

  • Thanks! God bless you and family also. May peace, good health and prosperity be yours.

  • we think alike...God bless you and your family during these scary economic and politcal times...

  • I forgot to mention on my previous comment that you need to also be pleasing on the eye.

  • i saw this documentary where Sarah's daughter recount a story about how Sarah's wish to make her own video clip had been rejected by the recording company because of her... well, not-so-camera-friendly appearance.

  • That SUCKS!!!!! That is whats wrong with the industry today; too much appearance and no real talent.

  • Yes... she said it depressed her mother very much. And I thought to myself, hey I (and a lot of people) wouldn't mind watching Sarah Vaughan herself starring in her own video clip! But then again, it's the show business we're talking here...

  • Thats terrible! The industry need to focus on the talent and hold off on the image or sex symbol portion. Sarah's gift will always make room for her.

  • What is considered talent is really relative, and just because you don't think people today aren't talented doesn't mean that others feel that same way.

  • I do think they are as talented as the singers from the last 30 years. Singers today do have talent, but not as much. That is me speaking; so you statement is correct.

  • at what point in her career? she was very very beautiful when she was younger. Still a pretty lady in her later years too, but especially in her youth

  • I don't recall the exact year of when that happened, but I think it should be in her later years. The clip shown here was taken from the same documentary I've watched that featuring the video-clip anecdote. You should see the film. It has commentaries from her daughter and many musicians that had worked with her...

  • does her daughter sing at all? I wasn't aware she had a daughter

  • Yes, she had a daughter, but I don't recall whether she has a musical career or not... Even if she does, I don't think her talent and popularity ever equals her mother's. Otherwise, we all might have heard about her, haven't we? And yes, I think "Tenderly" must have been a kind of tribute that Amy Winehouse paid to Sarah Vaughan....

  • i miss the days where a vocalist actually had to be able to sing in order to become famous. now they just need the right PR team

  • WOW! you just put it out there! And it is truth. Great vocal ability is not rewarded in todays market. Just think Mary J Bliege mad more money in her career thus far than Gladys Knight, Teena Marie, and Patti Labelle. Mary is not a real singer and her rewards are off the charts! Right songs and PR did it all!

  • That's not true, Mary J does sing, she can, but most of her songs are not about classically vocalizing

  • Well classical singing is not her style. The R&B/Hip-Hop is more suitable for her voice. She is not the type of singer I would put in front of a live orchestra and ask to sing a ballad or the national athem. I respect her accomplishments and she is a good looking woman. Go Mary!

  • By the way R&B and Hip Hop is not music! and singers like Sarah Vaughan and other talented people sing proper music like this!

  • Some may disagree with your comment on Hip Hop and R&B music. Although I really love this type of music. When you have singers like Sarah, it just make it all better! God bless!!

  • I dont really care if people disagree with my comment!! but its true! what i really hate is when people think some of the best Singers like Sarah Vaughan and they compare them in The same catogery as some of the well, i dont really know if you can call some of today's singers 'talented' because Hip Hop and R&B is not music!! its talking at a beat!

  • I think you need to come up with a definition of what music is?

  • Dont you talk to me like that ok? and i know what music is. rap and hip hop is a disgrace to music well, i suppose it would probaly suit you tastes then :)

  • In order for me to understand your statement, we need a definition of the term music. I dont particularily care for rap music. Since we sont have a defeintion, I cant just say its not music.

  • Where are the vocalist of today of this type. Ok, their was only one Sarah Vaughn. It would be unfair to put this expectation on anyone. Who are they? Could someone please send me their names? It seem as though this type of talent is extinct!

  • no one compares to Sas....but one nice voice is Teena Marie...i wish she do more jazz...she too is a rare talent...

  • You are correct no one compare to Sass! Teena Marie is one of my favorites. I agree she should sing more jazz. She made a lot of money off of The hit "Lover Girl", she have been chasing that Pop market since. Sarah Vaughn was one of her idols. I also like Rachel Farrell.

  • its so hard to make comparisons because there just isnt anyone like her....such a short list of greats....Sarah vaughn female vocalist, Maynard Ferguson trumpet, Dexter gordon sax, Stanley Jordan guitar..Stephan Grapelli violin...so few unique standard setting folks really...

  • So true!

  • The only "star" wish i could have heard live...the ONLY...wow! what beauty ..

  • Saw her about 2 months before she died. The concert was held in that crappy Blue Note nightclub in NYC. I thought then that I would make it a point to see her in a much better venue. She had lost so much weight and had a cast on her arm. She complained constantly about the sound system (and justifiably so) but sang quite well anyway. I marveled at the strength and power of her vocal cords, even as she was wasting away from cancer (I didn't know it then). Thank God I got to see this legend!

  • i got to see Maynard Ferguson just before he died...another musician that i truely love to listen to..i was saddened because i didnt see him in his prime..and i knew the end was near...

  • Loved seeing Billy Eckstein give the introduction. He sang several duets with Sarah. He was my father's favorite vocalist - who believe it or not, the girls used to throw their panties on the stage at him! (So it didn't start with Elvis).

  • OH, she's soooo GRAND!

  • anita baker sounds very similiar to her.

  • Simply the BEST.

  • Her voice just lifts you off the ground and brings tears of joy! What a gift of God.

  • Absolutely amazing... just amazing

  • How can u describe her in words. Her music truly is a description of who she was and how she will remain in our memories

  • There are not enough words in the English language to express how magnificent Sarah Vaughan was. My heart still aches for you. You are eternally in my heart Sarah.

  • Your comment brought tears to my eyes!!

  • If you got Aretha,Gladys Knight,Diana Ross,Dionne Warwicke,Patti Labelle all great singers in pop from the 60s in a room and asked them about Billie,Dinah Washington, Sarah,Ella,Carmen,Nina,Hazel(Scott)and maybe even Nancy Wilson- they would say these ladies set the standard for women whom try to sing! All were pianists except Billie,Ella, and Nancy.Quincy J. said instrumental music was more popular than vocal before the 50s so these ladies developed from musicians and sang with the best!-kdhsr

  • So true. I miss these greats of yesterday.

  • The world is unfair ... wolf1750

  • Sarah Vaughn was the greatest singer of all time!

  • With her instrument, her voice, One of the greatest musicians of all time. A rare human being...a genius!

Once I had the pleasure of sitting front row watching her. Unforgettable...

  • thanks she is a great inspiration to me as a music lover. and this is my first time seeing it. so its appreciated!..lol peace

  • Sarah usually included this tune on her setlist. There was rarely a time when she didn't perform "Once In Awhile," along with her other standards.

  • I thank YOU for posting!

  • In a different year, as you can see . . .

  • Ingrate...

  • piglet had it up. That version was the full version. This one is from the documentary. Obviously the footage is from the Dick Cavett Show

  • If "Piglet" did have it up, does that mean he/she could have the whole Dick Cavett appearence, unedited, so to speak ?

  • possibly.
