@betsydog0120 You guys spitefully voted betsydog's comment to death, but he has a valid point. Hvorostovsky has a beautiful and expressive voice, but there is a problem of balance. One can barely hear the piano. It sounds as if it weren't really part of the performance, just background noise, which is a shame, since the pianist is superb. There are many passages in this song in which the piano plays the melody, where the singer's notes play a secondary role.
One would think that the voice should always stay in the foreground, and this is usually true for most composers (think of Mozart, Schubert or Verdi), but when a singer attempts to sing Mussorgsky, he should know how to share leadership with the accompanying instruments. It's an unusual concept, and most singers would revolt at the idea, but that's what makes Mussorgsky's music so unique. Without that sharing of leadership, the song loses much of its depth.

profundo. Aunque canta bien en otros idiomas y en arias operaticas de otras nacionalidades,las interpretaciones de musica de su pais son incomparables,pues calzan como "anillo al dedo".
I saw Dmitri perform this song cycle a few years ago in recital...no one performs them better. His phrasing and colouring are exquisite. By far the best recital I've ever been to.
Meraviglioso, splendido timbro vocale, tecnica perfetta, espressività e stile sempre pertinenti: grande cantante.
