  • Rutherford would have made a better job.

  • Yes Hackett is genius....und unreplaceable..

  • Man, Stuermer just doesn't have Hackett's tone and feeling, he's not even close to the master!! I mean, he has got great technique, undoubtelly, but classic genesis guitar playing is not about shredding, super complex technique (even though hackett has got it), or fast and complicated licks, it s all about landscapes, beauty, and that s why Hackett fitted so well in the early years, and then went out to have a great solo career...he s one of my favs actually!

  • @vasco1990 Yeah agreed . . . always annoyed me how Stuermer messed up that beautiful minimalist solo with his mini shred fest. Why does he do that when the original melodic line works better.

  • steve hackett is the best yet.

  • That;s Daryl Stuermer for sure- Every concert after Steve Hackett Left Daryl Stuermer took over the lead guitars on all of Hackets parts, Stuermer also players many of the studio guitar parts originally recorded by Rutherford in order to Free Mike up for bass at the live shows

  • Stuermer isnt fit to lick Hackett's plectrum !

  • Respond to this video...you fuck it up get it complet

  • Great!

  • great music

  • Who cares about the politics. When great musicians get together they make the the greatest music.

  • yngwiemalmsteem: If you were the real yngwie, you would not write such bad things about Darryl an Genesis. Darryl is not bad, he is different, and he sounds different, and Chester is also an outstanding musician. They both just are not selfish front artists like many others... On this 2007 Tour there are some very good hilites that i have be missing a long time now

  • Daryl also played with John-Luc Ponty as well. very good guitarist all around . Loved Mikes bass , bass pedal and 12 string guitar work , great player.

  • Yes, Daryl is one of the luckiest guitarists in history. The gig he got was a huge payoff for him. I mean he's good but not nearly as talented as Hackett who actually wrote the stuff. Rutherford said "ah hell, he'll do" when selecting him. I wonder what it would have been like if Hackett had stuck around. He split bcause his material was not making it to the Genesis albums. A Solo career attracted him. If he had only waited a year for Phil's marriage problems. He could have had both. =((

  • I think you made a mistake : the solo guitar is played by Daryl Stuermer (and by Steve Hackett till '78), Mike Rutherford is playing 12 strings guitar and bass.

  • yes, is stuermer

  • @FrancoisSardou yes, thats right and Stuemer is much better on the guitar :D

  • Nice try,a bit out of tune, and he is nowhere near the guitarist Steve Hackett is. And the fancy bits don't quite work either. Oh and I don't rate Rutherford also.

  • Presumably you are better than both of them, eh? Who the hell are you to make such stupid comments? I cannot stand armchair critics trying to put down outstanding and greatly admired musicians. Does this sort of thing give you a sense of power, Tommy Hamilton?

  • At least when I play I am in tune. Anyway I loved Genesis until they squeezed out Hackett, he lifted Genesis to a higher level, then cast him out.

By the way if you want to hear a really good guitarist listen to Justin Hayward.

  • They did not cast out Hackett. Hackett never returned to the studio and did not even bother telling his partners.

  • It does not matter what the story behind Hackett leaving and Daryl stepping in for live shows is... BOTTOMLINE: Hackett is WAY better. I don't care how well Daryl Stuermer plays... he just doesn't get it. Genesis with Hackett was GOOD, without him it is NOT. End of story. (O.k. so "And then there were three..." was pretty decent, aye.)

  • Easy guys, novice error, great video of a gut wrenching lead/solo by Daryl, one of several at the show(s). Besides the comment about Daryl always playing Steve's parts, here's a more obvious clue- Double neck=Mike

  • Oh dear God..... please don't tell me you got Daryl Sturmer mixed up with Mike!! Ok, if there is ever any question as to who's playing.. If the the material is Hackett era it's always going to be Daryl playing Hacketts part... Get it right!!!

  • I wonder wht Daryll never really joined Genesis - i guess it was more cost efficient to have him as a session man on tours. Still - i guess he got paid well for essentially doing nowt but play somebody else's songs - nice work when you can get it

  • Daryl never joined Genesis because the invitation was never extended. Once Peter left, Phil took over vocals - Bill Brufford placed as road drummer. He didn't return for the Wind and Wuthering Tour(WWT) because he wanted studio rites on the next album. Genesis(Collins/Hackett/Rutherford/Banks) said no. Brufford split then Chester was selected to be the road drummer. Hackett quit during the mixing of Seconds Out in July/August of 77. Daryl was selected by Rutherford in 78 before ATTWT tour.

  • Many thanks - I knew this roughly. i think he and Chester are pretty accomplished sesh men and thus gt the work without the fame and luckily not the paparazi - a bit like JPJ in Led Zep - again a great musician. I think he had the choice of being zep 4 string and ivories man or Kappelmeister for the Elektor of Hannover (choir master) at one stage, not many folk get that choice ;-) Funny career for Bruford too - never really in yes, never really in in KC - bit of a journeyman I guess

  • That's not Mike Rutherford playing the solo. It's Daryl Steurmer.
