What I dislike about the European Union is that the easy travel between countries, like my grandad (whos Irish, came over here in the 50's) was telling me about some polish people, they were over there while Ireland was on a boom, then when the jobs dried up, they took the dole, got a cheap flight back over to Poland where THATs now a boom, raking it in over there, get a cheap flight to Ireland, pick up there dole money, and go back. Total abuse of the system.
"Year after year, significant legal acts are decided on the European level, which have an impact on the rights and liberties of the citizens. How long shall we wait until the threshold of real democratic legitimacy is crossed?" (German law professor Frank Schorkopf regarding the Lisbon Treaty judgement of the German Constitutional Court ).
Google : No2Lisbon2,European Gendarmerie Force,Open Europe...and pray that the Irish say NO again and save European democracy !
According to the recent German Constitutional Court ruling, the EU parliament is not and can never be democratic as it fails to even abide by the first law of democracy i.e. one "man" one vote/every vote is equal in it's importance.
The same Court also exposed the myth that the parliament represents a "European people"...it doesn't as there is no such thing.
Perhaps you could kindly explain what the following has got to do with REAL democracy ?
To elect an MEP for Luxemburg,38,000 votes are needed from that country.
To elect an MEP for Germany,628,000 votes are needed !
The "European" parliament is not even European,it is an EU parliament in all but name. The last time I looked Norway,Lichtenstein,Iceland and Switzerland were all European countries. None have representation in Brussels or Strasbourg.
There are ONLY too known to me solutions: make a Eurofederation (so eliminate the national country) or go back to European National States. Euro-integration process can only in my opinion end in in the first one. Because to create a functional democratic 'regime' you need union on ad least federal level like in Germany or USA. UE is now more like a "confederation of states" but is still in the process.
But what I really am trying to point is that there is no such thing as "votes equality".
If I understand You correctly You mean that now at last We don't have a war every 20 years. If that is your point than I agree. From the end of Second World War there was no real, great conflict between European nations and that's a FACT. Positive fact.
@Spenner56 Thanks from Holland. This is very interesting but please democracy is only a cover to thoese bankers who creat the debt situ. If the goverment takes back the wright to print its own money intrest free then you dont need democracy but administerators who should be the best qualifihed. The bankers rule over all democratic countries, till the world bank rules the world.
@skallagrigg The Parliament elects the Commission and may dismiss it at any point, therefore the Commission is responsible to the Parliament. Have a read of the Treaties :D It's near the start! :P
@Napoleon501ste The EU is moving towards majority voting where the EU Parliament will be able to overrule individual Parliaments. This is insane, especially when the wheels seem to be coming off the Euro.
@CharlesDickens99 Why is that bad? If this would not be the case then EU legislation would be useless. Why make laws without any power? BTW, EU rules only have power when they are within the areas where the treaties give the EU legislative power. The EU cannot make laws about defence for example.
As long as a country is in the EU they should follow the EU rules. But the countries parlaiment is still sovereign since it can vote leave the union whenever they want.
@PESactivists Long gone time for people to take back their Democracy from this parasite in the Center of Europe, I am glad to see that now apart from the UK, there is a rising rank of dissention against the European Parliament, it is a dictatorship in the making, no better than the Stalin or the Nazis.
It is controlled by the Stock Markets, banks and Big Business and is not representative of democracy and if Allowed to continue in its present form it will mercilessly bankrupt lives.
@PESactivists The True Finns, and UKIP are the beginning signs of change. I hope sometime, this overpowered, corrupt and vile institution will be pulled down. I feel deeply sorry for the people of Greece, like Norway and like Britain they should never have become part of the dream ticket sold by the European Parliament, they should have kept out of the Mickey Mouse Euro and left it well alone.
I hope Britain will leave, and Finland along with Norway, damn and down the European Parliament!
@Sliepnir2006 Well said pal.Since when has any northern European nation needed latin nations picking their pockets because they have a total inability to do hard work.
Southern Europe may as well be Africa and Eastern Europe wants a hand out not to contribute. It's like carring a dead wieght around or expecting to compete in a Marathon pushing someone in a Wheelchair who refuses to stand up and run themselves!
@ENGLISHDOGSOLDIER It's more complicated than that. On average, since 1945, Southern European economies have grown far faster than the UK's.
And, I can't understand why you hate the EU because at least you get to vote for the EU parliament. You don't get to vote for the British parliament. The House of Lords is unelected and that's where the real power in the UK lies: The House of Lords can veto or amend legislation before it becomes law. Citizen, that's what should be making you angry!
@PESactivists Wrong. Although the Parliament has to approve the appointment of commissioners they have no power to actually select them. This power is held by the President of the Commission on advice from the Council.
Ask Americans if they would like it if the President (+ Administration) was chosen by the Governors of the States and then approved by Congress and you would have absolute open rebellion. Why do we put up with it here?
I am an American college student and I am presently taking a class on about the European Union, its politics and policies. I have a Midterm this week and this video has helped me a lot to further understand the basic workings of the EU. Thanks girl

Think G.B has enough euro M.E.Ps ??
You Think its Fair that Britain has 1 M.E.P for 850,000 population,
whilst at the same time countries like Malta and Finland have 1 M.E.P for only 84,000 of their population,
WHAT KIND OF DEMOCRACY IS THAT ???

@TheGrassWhistler It's easy for people from the members to enter other countries, but for those outside the EU it's a hell of a lot harder to get in.

True Europeans want their democracies back !

In reality votes are equal only if you choose one person like in the presidential election when there are only two candidates left.

Good video, but you forgot that the EP is electing the commission! That is a crucial power and opporunity to influence the direction of the EU.
