This is the solo section of "Emotional Storm" from Avishai's album called "Continuo". That's a fantastic album, btw. The piano, drum and bass playing are all superb, not to mention the songs.
no, they are not wrong, both are right, he is using polyrhyms and subdivisions two and of course he is clearly playing freely, he has a lot of vinnie colaiuta influence, mark giuliana knows what he's talking about with his drums, amazing
That's what I meant by "time". I didn't say he wasn't doing some ear twisting subdivisions or that he wasn't playing in time at all. I just meant he wasn't always strictly subdividing and playing "in time" through the whole solo, but rather playing "out" and coming back freely. Sophisticated is right. I was really responding to the suggestion that this sound is simply a matter of metrical subdivisions, when really its much more nuanced, complex, and personal than pure math. God, we are dorks.
I would very much like for someone to transcribe the polyrhythms he is playing over this vamp. On the recording as well as on this video. A genuine monster of originality in a genre that have very little anymore.
its not really polyrhythms but more subdivisions on about every note value out there i,e triplets(crotchet and quaver) quintuplets note groupings.... thats the vibe of his playing in this alot like jeff tain watts does.. and yes a mother fuker player !
Just brilliant, love it, thankyou Mark!

I think you're both wrong. He's just playing freely, going in and out of time fluidly at will.

Not true. Fives, sevens, triplets. He is playing "loose" but there are some real sophisticated subdivisions in there
