Just my opinion here, but I love the melody and WAR's singing is way better than the other versions, but I think the lyrics are terrible. They do nothing for me at all and I'm actually someone who likes rodents. I even saved a muskrat's life once, but "Nibbling on bacon, chewing on cheese" and "Singin' and jingin' the jango"? This helps prove my theory that a good melody trumps everything else. I can think of loads of hits with great melodies with weak lyrics but very few the other way around.
@jiffin1 Hmm. My cd reads "candlelight." My vinyl copy is buried at the common record graveyard at my brother's house so I can't confirm the record title. Oh, well. It's a mystery.
DONT LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE FROG'S EYES or you will be hypnotized into liking starland vocal band and john denver, or at best have seizures....though i do dig this album on the whole.
For years I thought this song was a novelty or a joke. But the more I look into it and listen to the various versions including the original version here, the more it's obvious that this was meant as a straight-faced, serious song.
This only confirms my suspicion that I was born in the wrong decade. They must have had access to some fucking wicked-potent drugs back then if everyone was too out of it to even raise an eyebrow when any version of this song came on the radio.
Hypno Toad Stereo Systen Impress your freinds with the high quality sounds it produces and if they arnt amazed the hypno toad Stereo System can fix that
I'd swear i've see an animated cartoon of this song somewhere at some point in my life...but i'm probably remembering the cover of the 1977 Wonderland Records children's album version of "Muskrat Love" (just do a Google image search for muskrat love to find it for yourself).
Willis Alan Ramsey's original version should be made into an animated music video...it's the best version by far.
@notthebannerboys Oooh! That cuts deep, because my intention was to draw attention to my awesome ninja video skills and not resurrect an excellent song.
@Marcus538 Hey, his (one and only) album is sooooo good. I'm extremely old, so I still have it on vinyl. ;-) Check it out -- I'm sure it must be available on CD and/or mp3 d/l.
@syngas2009 Indeed he does! Too bad he STILL hasn't come out with his second album! I got to see him live in about '75 or '76, then again in either the late 80s or early 90s. That second time I saw him, he did some really good songs that he said were going to be on his "new album" that was supposed to be coming out soon. It's gotten to be a running joke -- when is that second album gonna come out??
good song, massively bad and childish video. don't post anymore videos please. thank you.

Mr. Ramsey and I are alumni of the same High School (Highland Park in Dallas), and he graciously performed at our 25th reunion in 2003.
I can assure anyone who questions, the title of this song is "Muskrat Candlelight" and was released as such on his self-titled, 1972 album.

Or, I could look at my thirty-year old album by Willis Alan Ramsey ... which I did ... I stand by the title of the song as given ...

But it's still called, "Muskrat Love"
jiffin1 11 months ago
@jiffin1 Actually, the correct title is Muskrat Candlelight. You can look it up n Amazon.

The cruel irony here is that if Ramsey's version had been a hit in 1972, we probably would have been spared the Captain & Tennille's travesty!
You WILL love this song, though...

This is the way it was meant to be done. Willis Alan rocks.

If Harry Nilsson had covered this tune nobody would have thought twice - and it would have been cool.
Capt and Tennille and America ruined the song.
WAR's version has same soul he brings to all his tunes - respect.

@kb1056
Right, you actually understand the words in this original version.
I like America's version, you can still understand the words, but in C&T's, the lyrics are mostly unintelligible[sp?].
