I think it's cool to be into where you're heritage is from. I have run into people who get offended if asked about it. I was raised to embrace people of different cultures and celebrate where people's ancestors are from. I realize we don't all have the same family upbringing, and not everyone is fortunate enough to know their ancestry, but regardless of that I think in some way we are all products of our ancestry to some extent, whether we're conscious of it or not. I say hurrah for ancestry!
I only tell people about my background when they get confused. I get asked if I'm an immigrant... a lot... considering how long my family's been in Canada and how European their background is, it's extremely weird.
I know what you're saying... I'm pretty much white-bred American but if I had to identify myself with a particular culture I'd have to say Swedish... I'm only 25% but my grandma is very proud to be 100% Swedish, and it definitely shows in our family traditions.
There are also some towns in the U.S. where you can see a definite influence from a certain country, like Germany or Holland.

Well, in the Netherlands we still call a third-generation Moroccan kid a Moroccan, not a Dutchman. Which is strange, because he technically is. Even Indonesians and Molukkans are still called that, even though they've been here for so long. It's not discrimination though, it's just that Dutch people don't feel the need to emphasize their nationality and are not really into nationalism ( even a light form of that) I guess it's the typical Dutch mentality.

What if someone that was 100% Indian had to move to America for work or something of that sort and they had a child in America, the child is now American? Granted, most Americans don't exactly follow the (for lack of better words) values and traditions of their true ethnicity but to say everyone that lives in America is just American and not their true culture, it defeats the purpose of America being considered a 'melting pot'.

in my canadian classroom, we always try to value each child's ethnic background. many of us here have parents and grandparents who have been born elsewhere so it's important to know where we come from. i know very few canadians who would simply say they're canadian. this american thing kind of baffles me.

No, she has a few designers who dedicate a considerable amount of time to her outfits. But that is true about her songs and dancing. Yes, I agree with what you're saying, but some of us were raised to celebrate our ethic heritage. In my family this is done mostly through food and church. And especially holidays.

in my canadian classroom, we always try to value each child's ethnic background. many of us here have parents and grandparents who have been born elsewhere so it's important to know where we come from. i know very few canadians who would simply say they're canadian. this american thing kind of baffles me.

when you say these "white kids" know nothing about their background, maybe you're talking about the culture, language, religion, etc. from these countries, rather than just the country itself? does it really matter though? each person will decide for themself how much they would like to look into their family history and whatnot, but it doesn't change anything .. =S

The stupidity in US America about race is so great.They have the concepts of each nation to be a race and then they treat each race as if it was a specie.What's worse is that they have the habit of mentioning these wrong concepts all the time for no plausible reason.Even if their concepts were correct, why would you mention a person being white or black if you are not talking about races in that conversation?This only leads to intolerance because you are constantly differentiating everyone.

and for the record, looking at the comments, I know everything in me that makes me the "mutt" that I am. I'm 1/4 norwegian, and my grandpa came from norway. yeah i actually JUST found out i'm part German. I think it sucks that I've never done anything really with my background. I can't think of a single thing :( I guess there are family heirlooms dating back for a while and I've seen some REALLY old photos of my family so at least I know about many of the people in my family... I'm a mixture of a lot but i really just look white. scottish, irish, german, english and the little bit of cherokee indian is what i got.

i know what you mean about the ethnicity thing. i was not born in the US and whenever i explain my ethnic background my white friends always have the need to do the "i'm german" thing. i always felt the way you did but i did want to deny them their background

it's because there's a real difference between nationality and ethnicity. you may be of american nationality... but german/dutch/vietnamese/whatever ethnicity. even if they dont know anything about their ethnicity, the only people who can claim to be of american ethnicity are native americans.

No, she has a few designers who dedicate a considerable amount of time to her outfits. But that is true about her songs and dancing. She DOES have an amazing voice (wish I could say the same about her dancing though) but Bad Romance just didn't show me that. :s I loved her Paparazzi music video though, UGH watched that far too much ;D
