Hey zak I was wondering because at my house we have 3 dogs. So I was wondering that when I get my dog in a couple weeks is should I have all 3 dogs just roaming around while I'm training my dog please reply back
This video has so many wonderful messages. Clicker training is a wonderful method of dog training. However, many people have the tendency to get stuck with applying only the mechanics and scientific principles of clicker training. The clicker on its own is unemotional which is great for marking the desired behavior with the same sound every time.
I agree, it is important to get on your dogs level and do more than simply click and toss a cookie. Dogs are spiritual beings that deserve to be treated with respect.
Hey Zak, I have a suggestion: how about you take out the part where you talk about dog training fusion and post it on its own. The reason why I'm suggesting this is that I'm trying to share your video with a lot of people who wouldn't normally just "find" it on youtube, but there's a lot of stuff at the beginning of it and some at the end of it that is irrelevent and they stop watching before it gets to the exciting part! I just think this is so exciting and great that it deserves its own video.
The reason trainers seem like machines is because most of them dont WANT their dogs to be happy. They are looking to make them OBEY, which is so wrong. This makes my especially mad when they use negative reinforcment to train dogs. Like I watched a video of a guy training his dog to walk on a treadmill with a CHOKE COLLAR. Its one thing to abuse your dog with one of those while straight walking, its another to make them do something they don't want to do with it
have you ever thought about getting into dog pull carting? it is a very rewarding experience for you and your dog and u can achieve an even higher understanding with your dog
I hate to see you give up competition ,,,,,but You could do a show traveling around to different dogs sports and introducing people tp some of the elite athletes and trainers in Field trails one of this countries oldest and most difficult sports and Shutzhund trials and AKC obedience ec it would be interesting for people and there would be no lack of uber talented fascinating people and dogs!
I think you've raised a great point here. As a trainer and youtuber like yourself, it has been my goal to encourage a more-than-robotic pattern of communication with dogs. There really is no better metaphor than to understand the dog as a small child. I do think that in the beginning stages it helps to have a consistent and relatively 'simple' approach, but there is no doubt that the goal for training in the long term is to be able to communicate more directly and fully. That is the magic!
Right with you Zak. I try to explain that need for heart to heart communication with your dog to clients. I am a clicker trainer, but still talk to the dogs I train, and have face to face conversations with them. They can understand so much more than many people think they can. This was made clear to one owner when her dog would not drop the ball. I said to her dog, "I can't throw it unless you drop it." the dog dropped the ball immediately. Communication is heart mind and words or signals!
@allmeansall Keep up the great work! Clicker training is great and should be used across the board. You'll agree, though, that so many people get locked into the "clicker mentality" and become very 1 dimensional in their training style. Great comment. Thanks for watching!
(...) even if the mistake was a problem of the handler, i dont understand it. I have an arguement face to face with one competitor because of that.
It was SO SAD to see that ... but anyway, I always keep in mind smiling to my dog and play a lot with him after running, even if it was a clean run or a discalification.
There's a lot of people that think that reinforcing their dogs consist in just giving them a treat o throwing them a ball... without emotion!! anyway very nice words Zak!! :-))
Very nice what you say about the emotion while working with your dog. I've thinking about that last week. I went to an agility competition with my dog and i noticed that 80% of the competitors don't play or reinforce their dogs! I cant believe it! they finish running CLEAN and just walk away with no smiling to their dogs, some of them dont even look at them and put them immedieatly in their crates. Or the ones that after a discalification get angry with the dogs,
The problem I have with getting excited and emotional with my dog during training is that he's a spazzy little puppy, and at the slightest sign of excitement from me, he goes off and starts flying off the walls! (Even after we've just gone for a LONG walk.)
But then, if I'm always calm and soothing in my movements and voice, he doesn't seem to understand when he's done something really well.
Hey Zak! Love your videos and your training methods. Since you seem to frequent dog parks, I'm wondering if you might someday do a video on how to prevent/cut off unwanted behaviors while there. I have a greyhound who loves the dog park, but I've noticed her picking up on unwanted behaviors from other dogs (dominating/joining fights started by other dogs, etc). She's a certified therapy dog, and very well trained otherwise. Perhaps this is a general topic that would help others as well? Thanks!
I agree with you about all this "getting in your dog's face" thing! I don't know how on earth people get problems like the dog bitting when you get to their face, or when you put your hands in their food, or when you get food/toys from their mouth.. stuff like that are a clear lack of communication, respect and love.
Also, I'm so damn tired of all these "positive reinforcement" thing. I do believe in it! It's just the way people put it, it seems that if you don't follow their way, you fail!
@Couzenheiro Imagine you are an owner of a McDonald's franchise and somebody comes in looking for a sandwich. What do you think you'll tell them? You sure won't direct them to a Wendy's across the street. Dog training is business like any other and people formulate opinions and methods which they deem the best. You will not fail using other methods. Is it as good? Maybe, maybe not. Take everything you watch, including this with a grain of salt and formulate your own opinion.
Yeah, i'm studying to be a zoologist and i've always felt that each species of animal has their own sort of culture or language and it always seem like people make animals seem more robotic especially when talking about animal intelligence. i think it necessary to have a connection in order to communicate, truly communicate and thats often understated. just my 2 cents :)
You should do more video about dog training! Showing us how you do to train your dog to do the amazing tricks they are doing. I know you have done some in the past but we want more! =D I love your way of thinking and I want to learn more because I use positive reinforcement with my dog but sometimes, it's not enough. There are some problems that I can't fix with it.
People are so paranoid about being bit these days they will tell you everything they think they can to prevent this. I lay down with my dog and go nose to nose with her, have I had her from a pup? No, she's a rescue and i've had her for two years, she's an Alaskan Malamute also. She's a great dog who causes me no problems, we respect each other but we have a strong bond so understand each other.
Many people get too fixated on winning they forget about the bond with their dog.
I noticed you had dog kennels in the back of your vehicle. For safety reasons, do you recommend that the dog be in a kennel while in a moving vehicle? I just let my dog sit in the back seat , but I read that it isn't exactly safe for them.
@chaarleneee1 Hi I know I'm not zak but I noticed your question and felt the need to answer :D
And I do recommend to put your dog in a kennel while in a moving vehicle. My dogs also sit in the back seat but they are leashed, wearing a harness and a special doggie seatbelt. If you leave them lose in the car and you have an accident they are not secure and can get hurt or hurt you.
I would recommend it to keep you and your dogs safe.
I saw you demonstrating looking into your dogs face, and I started doing it to really convey what I am saying, bad or good. It really seems to help! My wife and I absolutely love our dogs. They come #1 in our lives. If they are not happy, we aren't happy. I love your perspective on training dogs.
Hi Zak, I totally agree with you on the "Dog Training Fusion". Dog Sports in my country, Singapore, is still very much un-noticed by the majority of the dog community. Will continue to promote dog sports eg: agility, frisbee, dog dancing. There's so much to do to improve owner & dog relationship thru' dog sports.
hey i am only 12 and people are saying stuff like i don't know what i am doing and that i am to young to communicate with my dog the way an ADULT would.I use positive reinforcement to teach my dog tricks and communicate with my dog very well.my dog is a three year old maltese and i have been training him since he was a pup.now he knows sit, down, play dead, beg, wave, close the door for me,stand, dance, turn around, take a bow, stay, high five, and do a handstand.
@briasha765 Your way of communicating with your dog is the right way. "Adults" get too mechanical and sometimes forget they are talking to someone, not something. I hope you keep working with dogs-I think with your insights you will be fantastic. (Besides, adulthood isn't all it's cracked up to be)
I agree. Dog training shouldn't be boring with no interations. It should be fun and enjoyable for both trainer and dog. The better the realtionship with your dog is the further you'll go in training and the happier you'll be in life.
great video Zak! and i 100% agree with everything you said, from the ppl need reconnition for there training, in the dog sporting communities, to the raisein dogs overall statue in our communities... =))

So true Zak! The relationship has to be there on a deeper level than just "follow xyz steps". While I do use positive/click methods, I do occasionally tell my dog "no" despite what the majority of positive methods feel about the word. It's not that I'm yelling at my dog, I'm simply saying in a soft tone "good try, but that's not quite what I'm looking for". I feel that's part of the overall communication. Placing emphasis on the relationship is much more feasible to the average dog owner.
@melissa2ea You got it! Even in the positive training crowd, some have gone way overboard with political correctness. Nothing wrong with the word "No". As long as we love our dogs and look our for their best interest, then everyone is happy!
I agree 100% with you about having a bond and actually interacting with each other when teaching and learning something together as a team. The relationship that comes from dedication, love, and the celebration of our canine friends as sentient beings is truly a wonderful thing; and I love how you are making a huge difference in the lives of dogs everywhere.

yes! A great example to show how this new philosophy is so different is found in a comment you made quite a while ago in a video on leave it. You told us to speak in full sentences to our dogs. Amazing! Sure dogs can understand "LEAVE IT" but they can also understand, " will you leave this alone for me?" Dogs are much more capable than we think. -Don't get me wrong, I don't constantly speak in full sentences to my dog- that would be impractical- but its the idea of relationship that matters.
I LOVE how you get so passionate when talking about the connection between owner and dog. I totally understand what you mean. It's so hard to explain that moment when dog and owner "get" each other and work on the same level.
p.s. Great job on the new vids these past few days.
@MissArtsyDee Thank you. I certainly DO get passionate on the subject. It's frustrating to see the status quo have such an influence on people. Dogs are so much smarter than society realizes.
I think you are right about getting more involved with your dog when training. Duchess gets bored if I am too methodical and not very enthusiastic. (Kind of like kids in school, if you catch their interest with fun they are more apt to learn.)
Dude....please help me train my shih tzu to quit eating cat shit!!!!!....I have written you many times and tried many things...NOTHING IS WORKING!!!!.....he is driving me CRAZY!!! Please help:)
I think the reason videos are so step by step is simply to make it easier for the person to understand. But I've seen first hand people be equally bland when training their dog and people be really animated all in the same class with the same teacher.
@CanadianAnimalLuver The problem is when people apply a formula instead of authentic love and communication during training. How hard can it be to talk and communicate with a dog? I just find it shocking that so few trainers convey this to their students!
Have you ever worked with service dogs?

You need a mantra for your movement! Something like, 'dogs are people too'. Except, you know, better than that.
