I saw Kenny with Branford just a few weeks before his "unfortunate death" - what a loss to 'the music world" - he will always be one of the jazz greats - coachroche
@djkcel I totally agree with you - as one who has always said that my claim to fame is that I saw Coltrane twice in person, this is why I rarely listen to any of the "new" stuff - coach roche
Love Kenny Kirkland? Join our tribute FB group. Search "Kenny Kirkland: Jazz Giant" and you'll find us. (Group #7167098302).
1100 other people as cool as you (probably cooler) including Herbie, Joey C., and many other friends and people who performed with the one, the only, Doctone.
@colepato23 I saw him a few months before "he passed" at Yoshi's in Oakland with Branford and the same other players - As one whose claim to fame is I saw Coltrane twice in person, Kenny is still one of the 5 best piano players I ever saw in person - just as good as he sounds here - Kenny we do miss you terribly - "Keep Enjoying the Sounds of Jazz" -
Really nice playing. I think that you have to be a totally mediocre player, and know that you are, to really appreciate the strength of the stuff happening here.

Charlie Parker was such a great player, the only beef I had with him is that he couldn't really play his own music, he took chords from other songs and just improvised on it, never really made his own music, other then that great player in terms of improvising and building on tetra chords
Man this is incredible playing thanks for posting. Btw has anyone here transcribed/took time learn to play like him? I am trying to figure his playing out but it's really hard. For example 2:50-2:53, I think Kenny is going to key of Ebmaj, Dbmaj and he is using pentatonic scales but I can't really be sure. Any help ppl can give me is appriciated. I think kenny is great, He can play really out but a the same time he can swing, I definitely want to have more of him in my playing.
jazzsax77: parker a looser haha, you are a little tiny So-Sad person, im so sorry 4 u, if i knew you i would hug you and give u some love... its obvious ur parents never did that. best rigards.
this seems to be some kind of releas party for songbook ,so if anyone know if they played 2 down & 1 across on this gig , could anyone upload that? btw unbeleavable great music!
RIP Kenny! Great solo! One of my favorite tunes from Kenny Garrett "Songbook" album. Keep representing Detroit. Kenny G has nothing on you. Your the real Kenny G.
Br. Kenny Kirkland died like 10 years ago from an heart attack from heroin usage. Drugs has been the downfall of many of great musicians. Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Ray Charles, John Coltrance, Charlie Parker, Lee Morgan, etc. Leave them drugs alone.
Being from Detroit myself, let me translate....RIP means 'play hard', R.I.P. means 'rest in peace'. Kenny Garrett is not dead. And neither is Kenny Kirkland; his spirit lives on!

Brother Hubbard. Is this a tribute to the late Freddie Hubbard even before his death?

Everything is a tribute to someone even before they die. No one is always going to be alive. Not exactly predicting the future, haha.
