i hate this album so much, and this band too. i hate bowie in the 2000s. the stroke he had- it was god's halt to that horrible tour and a stop to many career mistakes to come, which we were luckily spared.
my x wife slipd away last sunday she was my frend and wife 4 30 years now with angels /but we will be 2gether one day we both no that just a long time waiting x love you burn x
Brilliant song, from a brilliant album. If I can just repeat what Ivan... said about repeated listening, if you repeatedly play this song, so it repeat's in your mind, until you are very, I repeat, very familiar with the song, only then will you be in a position to judge. Chances are you will then like this song, and want to repeatedly play it.
Been a huge fan since the early 70s, grew up on hunky dory and ziggy stardust.. But tracks like this are just as good, and the voice and style are amazing. see also 'never let me down', 'something in the air' and 'thursdays child'. granted there are far fewer great tracks than in the years 69-77 but i mixed his songs up for my 9 yr old daughter and 'slip away' is one of her favourites. That's a much more objective view than it's possible for me to have.
Paddy - would you rather he (and U2) just stopped and lived off their glory days instead of at least TRYING to make new music. For my money I'd rather U2 and Bowie etc keep on working and creating. It makes the world a better place.
You are sure you have really given some of Bowie's recent albums the chance of repeated listening. My experience, is that I am often initially disappointed, but that they tend to grow immensly over time.
with his later songs it's like he never quite reaches the emotion needed to take it to the next level. Life on mars is better but it's still a good song.
I love this song. My best David Bowie song from all his career! And how come - this guy was 55 at the time when the program was made. Would you bekueve it? He looks here so youthful!
It does indeed but without copying himself. In fact, I think it is one of his strongest ballads ever, on par with Life on Mars. So strangely sad and melancholic and hauntingly beautiful.
This is the equivalent of Anthony Newley on cocaine. A friend of mine went to school with David & Peter Frampton (Beckenham). I recall David when he worked in a record shop in London.
I love this song. David Bowie is great! But I don't get the line in with "uncle floyd". Who is uncle floyd? Can anyone explain? Greetings from Germany
Uncle Floyd is a childprogram on TV from US - search here and you see - But someone from the States will give you the details and the symbolic meaning
I too used to watch Uncle Floyd Show on chnl 68 in the tri states area, hurried home to watch it. Im also a fan of David Bowie & recently learned about this song..
Thanks David, You are an incredible man! A great singer!
David, David, David, I was ten when you said goodbye to makeup and i cried looking at your picture on my wall, and now I´m 45 and I´m still here and you´re still here and we both live and the world is still glorios place to discover...
A stylophone is a bit like a piano, well its layed out the same way, but instead of pushing the keys down you touch them with the pen thing it comes with, so pretty simple, well easy to understand, hard to play. David bowie is a very talented singer, songwriter, and every thing else he does, he is a Superhuman, if he is actually a human, i personally believe he is an alien because he is so perfect. And so beutifull.
Not to mention, think about just how many of his songs deal with space or aliens, even if we exclude the entirety of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Bowie is definitely an alien! But I'm O.K. with that fact as long as he keeps turning everything he even thinks about touching into gold.
One of the best songs I've ever heard!!! It should have been more famous! Amazing music and amazing how he puts his thoughts about the innocent old ages in Uncle Floyd's tv shows where though some important messages were sent to the adults!! Great chorus and such an incredibly melancholic melody. Bowie is really a real artist...

This song is based on Uncle Floyd...an entertainer from New Jersey (that I know very well). Uncle floyd told me that apparently Bowie and Lennon loved when they went to New York so they could get to watch the Uncle Floyd show on t.v....it was there favorite show. He's flattered by the song. He also recieved an autographed copy of the cd from Bowie.

the last 3 albums do not ever come close to the heights he reached in 1976/7/8/9....
Later stuff is lame. Just like listening to a recent U2 album which are also lame.
U2 keep up the dellusion by picking up their annual Grammy Award, for the 'Emporers' New Clothes' award.

Yes indeed, at least they are trying. I think in Bowie's case he did in fact at least try.
The last 3 U2 albums should be exposed for the lame, shit efforts that they are.
