  • I have many memories with this version of ubuntu :D

  • @DimanaLagiCom I Love Ubuntu

  • Yay! You saved me a whole bunch of faffing about, just what I needed, who needs to actually read a manual when you've got youtube! :O)

  • You made my day! :)

    Really easy!

  • thank you

  • is there a way 2 do this in reverse to access windows files on ubuntu?

  • Great Tutorial there man. You have lots of talent!!

  • Thank you this tutorial was very helpful.

  • ok start working randomly :) thanks again

  • I did everything you mentioned with a windows 7 and vista machine but in my network places the ubuntu doesnt appear. I can see the windows machine from the ubuntu however... Any ideas?

  • @DonWon1 did you make sure your workgroup is matched betw/ your Ubuntu box and Windows box? (ex: Windows workgroup = WORKGROUP, Linux Samba File workgroup = WORKGROUP). That's how you let Windows see your Ubuntu machine as a workgroup for your network.

  • Do you think that you could make a tutorial just like this except for ubuntu10.10 instead cause when i try to share my folder it sais failed execute process testparm and it then sais how it cant find the file in the directory. Please help!!!

  • @catholickid135 I found a solution to this .. it is something to do with updating your samba file .google the error you get and you will find the solution as I did.

  • my ubuntu machine doesn't show up in "networks" and when i try sharing a file i get an error saying 'failed to execute child process "testparm"(no such file or directory)'

    D:

  • Thanks

  • Hey, I'm having quite of a problem.

I followed every of your steps, but when I click "create share" and "add the permissions automatically", it tells me that "Failed to execute child process "testparm" (No such file or directory)"

    HELP ME!

    VERY URGENT!

    i'm using ubuntu 10.10

  • @LukeDavid96 hey, problem solved!

  • I did everything on this video and it has been very helpful. I think I am ahead of myself though. I think I need to start at the windows computer and "name the workgroup" and then do the same to the LAN (your terminology in the video). Do you have another video for this? If I am correct, this will allow the two computers to share assigned files and a single printer. A-what about just doing a blanket auth for all folders and B-what is the config for sharing wired Internet?

  • Here's a kicker.. When i restart Ubuntu my shares are no longer there. Is there a way to make them permenant like in Windows? Once you share a folder in Windows (XP in my case) the shares are always gonna be there until you un-share the file/folder.

    Thanks.

  • I am having difficulties. Each time I configure as the video I get \\ubuntu-system-name\share-name is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource.

I have done a complete fresh install on Ubuntu 10. LTS on this system.

    Can anyone provide some insight?

  • @bamitt123 try using sudo command before it

  • Worked great! Thanks.

  • THIS WORKED PERFECTLY!! It's been such a ball ache up till now. Many thanks Rich

  • two questions, first how do you find out your work group name since i dont know mine. second can this get music from vista to ubuntu?

  • Worked like a charm with Vista and Ubuntu 10.04 on a wireless network. Couldn't be easier.

  • I followed the steps, and I am so close to completion. only problem is I am asked for a password when I try to access my ubuntu computer from windows 7. no idea what the password is, or how to set it. thanks

  • I have Ubuntu 10.4 have Samba set up for two Ubuntu machines and on XP. If I want to access the Ubuntu laptop over Network, from either of the other computers it ask for a Password and it is not my normal access Password? Can you help?

  • Thanks for the vid mate.

  • it didn't work I can't find my ubuntu machine through windows 7 network. I follow step by step plz help i have 10.10

  • Did I do something wrong? When I logged onto windows it saw the Ubuntu on the network, but when I clicked on it it said windows could not access \\UBUNTU. What did I do wrong?

  • oh man thx for this it works but in my second shot, cuz in the first one it didnt do it right like u did thx again save my life.

pd. guys plz fallow instructions !!!

  • Hi, i need some help, i can't share files between two machines running Ubuntu 10.04, i made some experiments with a programming language named PD and i can send a receive data from a machine to the other. The only thing i can't do is share files, the Network folder doesn't show the two machines, unless the other machine boots on windows xp. Can you help me?

  • You are Amazing! I was looking everywhere for how to do this, so simple yet I had no idea. Thanks a lot man:)

  • Great tutorial. Thanks a lot.

  • nice thing, and indeed works like a charm ...but i have a question....i have a network consisting of 3 Ubuntu stations...all of them have hard drives with 2 partitions...on the first partition there`s the linux, and the second is NTFS...so, what i try to share in the network are folders from the second partitions of those hard drives...they appear on the network but they are unaccessible, and it gives a warning message, something like:"unable to mount the windows share"...can you help me?

  • @kannibalPlaNET Hi, i can't see the icons in the Network folder when i have two ubuntu 10.04 machines connected. If i boot on windows on one of them i can share files, but in ubuntu the only thing in this folder is the Workgroup folder and on it, the icon of the machine i'm running. Help!

  • @psicodelio hello...yo man, you need to install samba in order to share files on ubuntu...do you have that?

  • @kannibalPlaNET Yes, i have already installed samba. I've been following tons of tutorials without missing steps, and it doesn't work at all. Only, as i said before, for transmitions of data between software. My cousin have a macbook that i can see even without samba installed, i can't undertand why the ubuntu machines doesn't show up in the network folder. Thanks for the reply!

    Salud desde Venezuela

  • @psicodelio well i see....how does the linux machine conencts to the network? through a hub? switch? router? maybe it`s from the network...don`t get me wrong, you need samba to share files from an ubuntu machine, and not to browse the network! so in order to share files, it`s just like in the tutorial...if you share files on ubuntu that are on different partitions, that`s another story....you need to mount permanently the partitions and after that you need to share them!

  • @kannibalPlaNET i'm using a 4 port switch in this way [ubuntu-desktop] [ubuntu-laptop] [macbookG4] [internetCable]. I can' t even see the shared folders from one machine to another. If i use windows in a machine and ubuntu in the other everithing works propely. Thanks!

  • Works perfectly on 10.04 also.

  • Thanks :D now I can teach this lesson to my boys XD

  • Thank you so much! I was trying everything to get some sharing working on my network. This did it in 20 minutes.

I swear this crap was easier when I was 17. At least that's how I remember it.

  • Great help, thank you.

I've been trying to do this for about 2 months now from my mac to linux box..FYI to mac users you need to enable workgroups via network preferences.

  • Thanks for sharing this information..

  • i have no permission too save any text. and im a root member :O

    plz help me out

  • Thank you very much. I am a complete newbie and that couldn't have been any easier to follow

  • I had great success with this. Thank you very much. Now I can share my music with my little sister. :)

  • dude, it says "restart the session", that means the login session :)) you just needed to restart xorg by clicking ctrl-alt-bacskp and logging in again :) damn, you really are out of your depth here B-)

  • You can change the workgroup name withing the GUI by downloading and installing the Samba GUI interface. which is called "system-config-samba"

  • @Dankwansere Thanks for that; exactly what I was looking for. After upgrading my MythBuntu installation I hadn't had a reason to change the network shares for almost a year - only to discover that the GUI utility had vanished. I thought for a while that I was simply going senile, but thanks to your heads-up I noticed the package had been removed (presumably by the upgrade).

  • @Cephalus00 You welcome :)

  • tnx very much. 5 stars and sub

  • tnx very much. 5 stars

  • Thanks a ton for this. Love Ubuntu but also love Windows so great to finally have harmony!

  • Works fine on karmic & unr karmic. Package system-config-samba (installed using Synaptic) allows changing of Workgroup name using Samba entry on System-Administration menu. Then click Preferences followed by Server Settings to view/change Workgroup

  • Excellent Video - Works exactly as described on my Acer Aspire One with Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix.

    Thanks

  • it want me to enter network username and password i tried everything i could think of.

  • Great video, thanks. I have a question though. Do I do the same steps if I want to share a folder between 2 Ubuntu machines? Ubuntu A is sharing a folder but I cannot see it in Ubuntu B. Ubuntu A and B are connected via a router. Please help!

  • I followed everything but it didn't work!!

  • anyone know how to share the cdrw in the notebook with ubuntu, to the netbook with windows xp? To use it in windows, with nero, etc.. it's possible?

  • I can't check the guest option in the 'Share options' screen, what can i do?

  • Try GADMIN-Samba to configure Samba in GUI

  • Comment removed

  • Can some tell me how to share a hard drive in linux

  • You should get gnome-network-admin from Synaptic to get the old "Network" in System-->Administration

• There's no sharing options in mythbuntu, anyone know how I get it?

  • Now try copying a 2 > gb file and see what happens. It requires further 'tweeking'. Love Linux.

  • i think it''s important to note that you have to set some permissions so you can successfully share the folders, since samba sharing settings cannot bypass the OS folder permissions, so in the folder you wanna share, you have to set the permissions for "others" so they coincide with samba settings

  • Hi, i saw your video tour it helps me a lot. I am sending you the GUI part for shares folders within terminal.

    run:

    sudo shares-admin

once there, you can changes the work group using GUI system

    great video and good luck,

  • Thanks Seth Rogen!

  • If i dont have guest access i cant access my folder. I set up a password with smbpasswd but it still doesnt let me in.

  • How do you access Windows files from an Ubuntu machine?

  • as for a gui, one could try the webmin application... works great!!

  • Great tutorial! Could you also make a tutorial about sharing a printer between Windows 7 desktop en Ubuntu laptop? I can't get it to work.

  • Install system-config-samba to manage samba config using GUI.. This allows changing workgroup from system>administration>samba. Then select Server Setting under Preferences.

  • thanx for sharing ....

  • Your video is good, but I just don't know why does my Windows 7 does not recognise the directory. :(

  • Thanx, great video.

  • Great vid.. but few pointers to make it easier:

1: Install Samba (Add/remove> Search for Samba)

2: Add user (in samba GUI (system>administration>samba)

3: Add shares (plus sign, and locate folders)

4: Change WORKGROUP to whatever (in samba GUI)

    You're done..

  • I don't understand the Unix user names. Do you mind explaining that to me? Like sync, man, backup, mail etc. I want to create user specific folders.

  • In Nautilus, when I right-click on the folder, the option "Sharing Options" does not appear. How do I see that? Samba is already installed, and I can see the folder from the other computers, but I can't write to the directory.

  • Thanks a lot for the post. It made things very easy.

  • You didn't remove the # from the line of workgroup in smb.conf file means the workgroup option is disabled.

How did it work? Did you enable remove the pound # later?

  • thanks, was having prblems working out how this was done... cheers.

  • Hey guys I need some help. I've been using windows for years (since I was in kindergarten) and I've just recently switched to Ubuntu 9.04. I've been reading up on how to use the terminal and in Places in the upper panel I somehow moved my Pictures folder from the places into my music folder I've since then moved it to my desktop but I don't know how to move it back to my Places menu. I've tried using the GUI to edit my menus but it doesn't show my places. Please help me

  • Thanks

  • there's a GUI for samba in "add/remove applications" called "Samba." I havenn't tried sharing yet but I when I changed the setting in the GUI, it directly modified the smb.conf.

  • I also would like to know the answer about the password (from indiasrainbow).

Plus, could you tell us what screencasting software you used on Linux?

Thanks for the awesome howto, more gurus should do this!

  • Cheers! Helped loads subbed!

  • hi great tutorial . i can transfer files if i click "guest access ( for people without an account) " but if i uncheck that box...windows xp asks for a password ...i give it my ubuntu username and password but that doesn't work...do I need to set up a special share account to get a password protect on the network?

    thanks for any help :)

  • Hi, I got it figured out. You need to create a user for Samba, which itself needs a user created for it on Ubuntu. Create a new user called "sambauser" (unprivileged), then in a terminal enter "sudo smbpasswd -a sambauser", then enter a password. Now you can uncheck Guest Access, and in the dialog box in XP you enter "sambauser" for user name and the new password. Voila! Secured Samba access!

  • hey wow thanks...."voila" absolutely ..that was probably the easiest thing ive ever done on ubuntu. !lol :P but wouldn't have known without your help. i searched for hours trying to find that out. :P

  • do u have to be wired or can u have a home network wirelessly?

  • At 5:16 I'm getting a blank page when I open that up? Help?

  • u need to be root user or check the file path is correct

  • shouldn't you be using "gksudo" when you execute a GUI application like "gedit" ? It may not be necessary in all situations but it's good practice

  • Thank god for a good GUIDE! All other just..... up. 5*

  • Great stuff, worked awesome. Thanks!!!!

  • you are the best!

  • Awesome, worked 4 me. But got to edit the permissions in Samba. Any idea how to do this? How do I open the application Samba for start...

  • That was fantastic!! A video is a thousand times easier to follow than any written instructions (no matter how well written)could ever be. This was precicely what I needed. Thanks a bunch!!! *shakes hand*

  • NIce video....but how do you setup a secure share.

So folks can authenticate. Even on my home network...I would prefer to put some security on my Samba share.

Which account would I authenticate with.

Do I put create an account on the Ubuntu machine with the exact same user name and password as on the windows machine??

  • nice and interesting video.

  • How to get back the old Samba "Administration-Menu-Entry" where you can set your workgroupname in a gui:

    ---

    Just install the following package:

    system-config-samba

    ---

    System --> Adminstration --> Samba

    ... authentication

    ... window pops up

Preferences --> Server Settings --> WORKGROUP

  • thanks a lot man
