I can't understand people prefer this version above David Bowie's original. This cover is almost the same as the original (only the organ is gone and in the end where Bowie sang there is a guitar): I think it's nothing more than imitating a song. And although I find Nirvana's performance very good: when a cover is very similar to it's original it's nonsense to say that the cover is better.

But my formulation wasn't correct: I can understand people prefer this version because they like Nirvana, but I can't understand that people say that this version is better then the original. That was what I meant. When a band I like would cover a song almost exactly the same as the original I still would say the original is better (although I prefer the cover).

i think its less about singing and more about the music and lyrics when it comes to nirvana i think dave grohl would agree on that point as well. The way kurt sang songs really inspired Dave to actually sing the way he does now. I mean would you say that the lead singer of the clash, Joe strummer, or The Ramones, Joey Ramone was great singers? i wouldnt, it was the message and attitude behind the songs that really won peoples heart over, as well as the music.

Yeah Dave said that when he was in nirvana he started writing songs, he had a shit load of songs written but he said he didnt want to rain on Kurts parade, it was kurts time to shine so he stepped to the side, he also said that kurt really inspired him, the way he sings softly during the song and at the bridge and or chorus he would just jam out and sing real loud. You can notice that in Daves first song everlong by foo fighters, where he sings real soft then he belts out then sings real low.
