I can't explain why this song has stayed with me over the years, nor why it appealed to me so much more than any other Big Black song. But it was, and still is, my favorite.
This song creates cracks in time. It links my thinking as an adolescent in the 80s with my adult thinking in the 90s and again with my middle aged thinking in the 2000s. The older I get, the more meaningful this song becomes to me.
@rubster1206 I met him in Portland, ME - ha! I was 20 at the time, so I couldnt see the show - they were hanging around the old port the day after, Shellac, that is, back in 2002
As far as last songs on last albums go, this takes the crown. "Man's gotta have someone to hate, guess I'll do. And when I'm through with myself, I'll start on you."
I totally agree with your assessment of this song. IMO their most beautiful , brooding track. Drum track is strangely hypnotic, oddly timed, and works so well.
Fuck. Those lyrics punch me in the brain.

That definitely is Mark Arm. The photo was taken by Charles Peterson and was featured in his book 'Screaming Life'.
