  • Where did this kind of music go? :(

  • That was sensational! Best version of the song amplified by extreme & crazy footage!

  • I just realised this was probably Bernie's first trip to the UK. Glad it didn't put him off.

  • Kristin's just about the best!

  • most of the dancers focused on by the camera are professionals put there by the show.

  • Great things about this - 1) Kristin 2) Narcizo approaching critical drumming mass 3) rock 'n' roll cellist!

  • love and devotion

  • Dope as f*ck, this live version actually sounds better than the studio recording... incredible! That rarely happens with a capital H.

  • Wow, so hard to concentrate on the incredible performance while the cameras fly around like Peter Pan on acid. Seriously, who booked TM on this show? What were they thinking? And thanks for sharing RVSAID.

  • Jaja jakieś siliokony i kryśka hersh you have nothing to ofer

  • Ass kickin Kristin

  • whats will all the stupid bitches dancing around like its some-sort of retarded R&B or rap or whatever video?

    goddammit....

  • @M45T3R84T10N The ecstasy was flowing readily during this period of time. Ha ha. I don't think any of them in the crowd would really have been in to rnb. Madchester britpop or rave maybe.

  • I still love this song after so many years. This live version of the opening track on University is fantastic and even more fun to watch with the insanity going on crowd wise.

  • Great song. Great band. Kristin Hersh nails the vocals in this performance.

But that crowd...wow. Where did they find them??

Two parts of the crowd footage are particularly noteworthy: the woman featured 20 seconds in, who looks like her surgically enhanced bosom is about to pop out of her marabou-clad bikini top. And, 1:20 in the video...pelvic thrusting in a crop top and pigtails (mom must be SUPER proud of her).

    Almost surreal video.

  • Ha ha so true, a different time on British late night TV

  • @RVSAID She's probably a mom herself now.

  • @leek1998 this was the "word". Reble late night youth TV from the 90's in Britain. It had a reputation. Ha ha.

  • @leek1998 haha. I know. I've watched this at least fifteen times. Well, hell, they were just having fun. But, yeah, haha, they did look pretty ridiculous, most of 'em. The girl at 1:20: hahahaha. And the two black girls, doing the snake-back thing? hahaha. And Mr. Punk Rock going wild at the front of the stage, haha. And I swear somebody is wearing just a diaper at one point.

  • @leek1998 Oh, my God....and at the very end....next to the "Just Happy To Be Here" black guy...what is that, a Madonna female impersonator? haha.

  • @leek1998 Yeah I wasn't feeling elements of the crowd either, although that would've been close to the kind of energy I wouldn't be able to help projecting if I'd been there.

  • I have had a little crush on this woman for almost 20 years. Such an intriguing artist. Let's hope she keeps cranking out the music for another 20!

  • Never mind the crowd, are those cymbals on Dave's drums?

  • @jonboyjon1976 yeah i noticed that too. was he still not using cymbals by university?

  • @Notecrusher I think he started using them in Red Heaven, but I could be wrong. He was using them in The Curse.

  • wtf is this whore train??

  • That crowd creeps me out.

  • @remywood81 My words exactly... brrrrrrr....

  • Rock n roll cello! David Narcizo was/is a fantastic drummer too.

  • Awesome!

  • my mate was sound tech on "the word" and there was never any playback or dubbing on that show ever!!! always absolutely live... crowd were plants tho!!!

  • this is a good song to bad throwing muses never got popular

  • @royalnash they grew up in rhode island, which is where I grew up, so they'll always have a special place in my heart (also their music is beyond great)

  • Was there ever a non live music video to this song?

  • @jrpackerfan Yeah but it doesnt seem to be on you tube.

  • It's likely I watched this while drunk after coming home from the pub. Who the fuck knows.

  • Good song/band and all that. But WTF is with that Fake & Gay staged dancing? LOL...the chick waving her boobs in the camera? Do that in a mosh pit and that top will be ripped off. Damn marketed videos farming out the good talent doesnt look good over time.

  • HOOOOT!!! ;D

  • I had such a crush on Kristin back in the 80's. I went to school in CT and used to see them all the time around RI and the surrounding area. The were a great act live.

  • 1994ish... "the word" channel 4 uk.... always had great bands on...

  • This is Throwing Muses mk. 2, i.e., minus Tanya and Leslie.

Not as good, and I think Kristin lost the plot for awhile and most of her best songs from this era were put on solo records.

However the 2003 Muses reunion record is amazingly good, and Kristin's 50 Foot Wave power trio is absolutely balls-out great. Check 'em out, you won't regret it. It's like Nirvana but with a chick singing.

  • of corse, but what kind of digusting event was this?

  • A british late night tv show, known for being fairly anarchic.

  • incredible band, incredible song, and most incredible singer. I love her.

  • and something else: martin mccarrick on cello?! beautiful.

  • i'm sorry but i find this disturbing. as kristin herself has said: "substantive music needs substantive listeners." there is nothing substantive about this tv audience. great performance, though. her voice sounds great.

  • There is a reason why it is called 'rock music'. If Kristin was reading poetry, then yes that requires substantive listeners. Rock music is magical and to be enjoyed to the maximum one can enjoy - not to sit there like a cardboard cut-out. If you have ever seen any Doors videos, Jim always encouraged the audience to explore themselves and their inner child.

  • did john peel used to play these a lot?

  • does any1 else think that the club at the start of austin powers is similar to this 1???

  • 2:56.... "Whens Salt and Pepa coming out??"

  • I am sad to say but I recently found out about this song :o( .... I know a couple of Throwing Muses songs, Firepile being my favorite of theirs but I had never heard of this song..... I feel like I should be punished.... :o( snif.. snif.

  • yes you should. i agree

  • @ColorsBright RAAAAAAYYYYYCCCCCCYYYYSSSSSSTTTTTTTTT!!!!!

  • Yeah, 95% of that audience didn't even know who the hell was playing, and they didn't listen to this type of music to begin with. They also fail at dancing. I mean, they just look like they're having seizures.

  • University is a flawless piece of art from beginning to end.

  • Love her ! Great album !

  • The audience look like they're dancing to a completely different song.

  • i think the people dancing on shows like this are being paid to look hot and shake their boobies at the camera and act as into-it as humanly possible while in fact few if any of them have even heard of the artist performing.

  • Big booby people up by the stage, flat chesties stand over there behind the pillar. No, not that one, the next pillar. Are the, er, thong measles here yet?

  • It's the Word. It was famous for showing you on TV if you had big boobies or for doing something ridiculous/painful to yourself.

Oh, and for launching Terry Christian on an unsuspecting world

  • Most do it for free. Just to be on the tellie.

  • @STUARTSt321 in a completely defferent place (whats with the boobs?) , listening to a completely defferent group ...

  • @STUARTSt321 The ones in the foreground are professional dancers - never understood the logic behind that.

  • I remember when this came out...

They actually played this on the radio...89X in Detroit (Windsor) -

There was nothing else like it!

  • "helicopters taking off" - That is so it! I went and bought the single after seeing this on the Word and it was inevitably disappointing after hearing this version.

  • I got a kick out of the gyrations of the big breasted women....not really that sort of music

  • Comment removed

  • my friend has throwing muses written on his shirt

    thought id check em out

  • I love this song and I love how this particular version has a harder, edgier sound!

  • Indeed, I bought the single AFTER watching this performance and was somewhat disappointed... It's a good track, but this version ROCKS.

  • ha ha - funny to see the crowd dance around so excitedly like that lol - dont get me wrong Muses were tops - but still they're not that kind of band! - I mean come on - they're not like the b-52's or something Lol

Also - just something i noticed - could u2 have nicked their stage design for popmart from thie stage that is shown used here!! hmmm looks very similar.

  • the greatest band of all time

  • Smokin!!!!

  • 4AD is the best independant record label next to Motown and Stax.

  • Great driving rock!!!! DONE RIGHT!!!!!

  • I saw this performance the night it went out and I thought it sounded like helicopters taking off. I video-taped it and watched it a few more times. Now it's nearly fifteen years later and it STILL sounds like helicopters taking off. Fuck I wish I knew what her rig was for this performance.

  • where did they film that?

  • I saw this live.

I still can't get over it.

They were so good yet no one noticed them.

I liked them before this and I've been a fan of Kristin ever since.

She has the best voice ever.

Saw her solo at the Barbican around 98, amazing.

  • Damn...There was a lot of good music back then!

  • never saw this, this a good live version of this song, simply love it.Throwing Muses was so underrated it was unfair to them

  • Very underrated! I was a fan since they were giving free lunch time concerts on Landsdowne st./Boston.

  • I remember seeing this when it aired.

Being a fan of Throwing Muses, I thought it was a circus in my TV. I didn't think any less of them at the end.

  • Wow, that rocked. I loved those night club go-go dancers they had on The Word - watching them try and dance along to Dinosaur Jr, L7 and the like.

  • what's the deal with the big tittie chicks and shirtless douchebags dancing?

  • I was actually the director of the show and I felt that I was being current in adding those elements to the show. Your comments are hurtful and are making me doubt my talents. Thanks, you've ruined my day and I'm probably going to have to have a few drinks if I'm to get to sleep tonight.

  • Pay no attention to the haters! The video rocks, as does this version of Bright Yellow Gun!

  • Yeah they were so funnily uncalled for.

  • Kristin and her ray-gun eyes.

  • Najbolja stvar ikad potpuno neverovatno nekontrolisana igra...uspomene...!

  • A island of artistic brilliance in a sea of drab bullshit that was The Word.

  • WUAUUUUUUU me encanta esta canción!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Magnífica!!!!

  • poor Kristen...........the audience and their dance moves are insane. I love Throwing Muses!!

  • Thanks for posting this, awesome!

The music of the 90s was so fucking amazing...And amazing rocking grrrls like Kristin Hersh, Louise Post, Kathleen Hanna and Kim Deal (and many more!) forever made me attracted to girls with dark hair and lucid blue (or green) eyes....Mmmm.

  • This is incredible (the band's playing that is)! Thanks for posting. Amazing live version.

  • Awesome - as has also been noted here, I saw it live at the time and was converted to the Muses (even without Tanya). What a performance.

  • Those dancers are ridiculous (especially the one-man mosh pit), and the psychedelic nonsense in the background is off-putting, but this is a great performance. Bernard is on fire, and Dave is..... well, he's Dave.

This was my favorite of Kristin's looks.

Question, though. Is that audience dancing in front of green screen? It sure looks manufactured to me. And the "backdrop" is surely edited in.

  • ps. The dancers were professionals hired by the show - but that's got nothing to do with it! The secret of great live TV performaces like this is good producers & sound engineers and plenty of rehersal. Plus of course great bands like this!

Anyway, thanks very much for posting the video. I remember watching it on TV live at the time and then immediately playing back from tape at full blast over and over again until I almost went deaf. Absolutely superb.

  • The music on The Word was always 100% live.

  • Nie moge uwierzyć, że TM Odwalało takie chałtury dla MTV:(

  • how could you think this is playback?

  • Because it was just too good, especially for The Word

  • There wouldn't be so much mikes around the drumkit if it was playback.

  • @RVSAID It was live - compare it to the record, it's distinct.

  • Despite the crowd..., amazing!

  • Definately live. The cello et al. They're playin their hearts out!

  • "Wouldn't like to say but probably playback".

this is definitely a live recording of the song, though i guess it still could've been pre-recorded just for the show. it sounds a lot different than any officially released version of the song.

  • The crowd, oh my god the crowd!

  • The file is 118,000 KB if you want it emailed let me know - same offer to all. Glad you liked it

  • This is so cool. Whoa.

  • cool as you like
