Wow, so hard to concentrate on the incredible performance while the cameras fly around like Peter Pan on acid. Seriously, who booked TM on this show? What were they thinking? And thanks for sharing RVSAID.
@M45T3R84T10N The ecstasy was flowing readily during this period of time. Ha ha. I don't think any of them in the crowd would really have been in to rnb. Madchester britpop or rave maybe.
I still love this song after so many years. This live version of the opening track on University is fantastic and even more fun to watch with the insanity going on crowd wise.
Great song. Great band. Kristin Hersh nails the vocals in this performance.
But that crowd...wow. Where did they find them??
Two parts of the crowd footage are particularly noteworthy: the woman featured 20 seconds in, who looks like her surgically enhanced bosom is about to pop out of her marabou-clad bikini top. And, 1:20 in the video...pelvic thrusting in a crop top and pigtails (mom must be SUPER proud of her).
@leek1998 haha. I know. I've watched this at least fifteen times. Well, hell, they were just having fun. But, yeah, haha, they did look pretty ridiculous, most of 'em. The girl at 1:20: hahahaha. And the two black girls, doing the snake-back thing? hahaha. And Mr. Punk Rock going wild at the front of the stage, haha. And I swear somebody is wearing just a diaper at one point.
@leek1998 Yeah I wasn't feeling elements of the crowd either, although that would've been close to the kind of energy I wouldn't be able to help projecting if I'd been there.
my mate was sound tech on "the word" and there was never any playback or dubbing on that show ever!!! always absolutely live... crowd were plants tho!!!
@royalnash they grew up in rhode island, which is where I grew up, so they'll always have a special place in my heart (also their music is beyond great)
Good song/band and all that. But WTF is with that Fake & Gay staged dancing? LOL...the chick waving her boobs in the camera? Do that in a mosh pit and that top will be ripped off. Damn marketed videos farming out the good talent doesnt look good over time.
I had such a crush on Kristin back in the 80's. I went to school in CT and used to see them all the time around RI and the surrounding area. The were a great act live.
This is Throwing Muses mk. 2, i.e., minus Tanya and Leslie.
Not as good, and I think Kristin lost the plot for awhile and most of her best songs from this era were put on solo records.
However the 2003 Muses reunion record is amazingly good, and Kristin's 50 Foot Wave power trio is absolutely balls-out great. Check 'em out, you won't regret it. It's like Nirvana but with a chick singing.
i'm sorry but i find this disturbing. as kristin herself has said: "substantive music needs substantive listeners." there is nothing substantive about this tv audience. great performance, though. her voice sounds great.
There is a reason why it is called 'rock music'. If Kristin was reading poetry, then yes that requires substantive listeners. Rock music is magical and to be enjoyed to the maximum one can enjoy - not to sit there like a cardboard cut-out. If you have ever seen any Doors videos, Jim always encouraged the audience to explore themselves and their inner child.
I am sad to say but I recently found out about this song :o( .... I know a couple of Throwing Muses songs, Firepile being my favorite of theirs but I had never heard of this song..... I feel like I should be punished.... :o( snif.. snif.
Yeah, 95% of that audience didn't even know who the hell was playing, and they didn't listen to this type of music to begin with. They also fail at dancing. I mean, they just look like they're having seizures.
i think the people dancing on shows like this are being paid to look hot and shake their boobies at the camera and act as into-it as humanly possible while in fact few if any of them have even heard of the artist performing.
Big booby people up by the stage, flat chesties stand over there behind the pillar. No, not that one, the next pillar. Are the, er, thong measles here yet?
"helicopters taking off" - That is so it! I went and bought the single after seeing this on the Word and it was inevitably disappointing after hearing this version.
ha ha - funny to see the crowd dance around so excitedly like that lol - dont get me wrong Muses were tops - but still they're not that kind of band! - I mean come on - they're not like the b-52's or something Lol
Also - just something i noticed - could u2 have nicked their stage design for popmart from thie stage that is shown used here!! hmmm looks very similar.
I saw this performance the night it went out and I thought it sounded like helicopters taking off. I video-taped it and watched it a few more times. Now it's nearly fifteen years later and it STILL sounds like helicopters taking off. Fuck I wish I knew what her rig was for this performance.
I was actually the director of the show and I felt that I was being current in adding those elements to the show. Your comments are hurtful and are making me doubt my talents. Thanks, you've ruined my day and I'm probably going to have to have a few drinks if I'm to get to sleep tonight.
The music of the 90s was so fucking amazing...And amazing rocking grrrls like Kristin Hersh, Louise Post, Kathleen Hanna and Kim Deal (and many more!) forever made me attracted to girls with dark hair and lucid blue (or green) eyes....Mmmm.
Those dancers are ridiculous (especially the one-man mosh pit), and the psychedelic nonsense in the background is off-putting, but this is a great performance. Bernard is on fire, and Dave is..... well, he's Dave.
This was my favorite of Kristin's looks.
Question, though. Is that audience dancing in front of green screen? It sure looks manufactured to me. And the "backdrop" is surely edited in.
ps. The dancers were professionals hired by the show - but that's got nothing to do with it! The secret of great live TV performaces like this is good producers & sound engineers and plenty of rehersal. Plus of course great bands like this!
Anyway, thanks very much for posting the video. I remember watching it on TV live at the time and then immediately playing back from tape at full blast over and over again until I almost went deaf. Absolutely superb.
this is definitely a live recording of the song, though i guess it still could've been pre-recorded just for the show. it sounds a lot different than any officially released version of the song.
