I'm sorry but that was unimpressive. All it's doing is lowering an object from ceiling. Yes I know it senses the altitude, that's a given. Knowing that, it is unimpressive. Do that from the hovering craft in a strong, yet unstable crosswind. That would be impressive.
@testermanish well soooooorrrrrrrryyyyyy science isn't all myth busters and manswers, some times you just have to do a thorough run through to make sure that this doesn't happen on the actual trip and as for that crosswind, the martian atmosphere is so thin you could walk straight through a martian tornado and barely fluster you're shirt.
@testermanish One step at a time. On Mars there are no strong crosswinds, but obviously doing the thing full up with rockets will be far more impressive. But you need to test parts of it before you do the whole thing.
@r0ck3tsm0k3 Mars has plenty of strong crosswinds, a planet-wide dust storm occurs every 1-in-3 years! And in the area of 80-120mph! Yes, the density is less, but higher speeds make up for that. AS for testing, I see no evidence of further testing of the whole system. I really hope I'm wrong, but seeing the date of this test & how close to launch it was, I seriously doubt there was more. NASA's skipped testing before, like the Mars Climate Orbiter w/the English/Metric mismatch!
I'd say it's ridiculous of everyone cheering over this, but I understand the importance of it working as prescribed. I'm sure we all know how terrible it would be to get Curiosity where it's going, and have one little overlooked detail throw the party out the window.
now again but toss it out a plane first.
