@80smusicfanNO1 That's probably not his fault. This was one of the first all-CG sequences in DS9 and even on SD TVs it was obvious that they used very low-poly models.
@davidt0504 Two things: 1. Starfleet had to create shields to fight the Dominion -- before the war, Starfleet shields were useless, but at the end of S5 the Dominion were caught by surprise. It could be that skintight shields (like in TOS, VI, and XI) are part of that solution. 2. We're only seeing clips of the battle here. The episode basically has this battle being drawn out for hours, so many ships that we see getting shot down towards the end actually lasted awhile.
Personally I prefer the original DVD picture because this clip is a little too sharp and bright, it makes this CGI ships more "CGI" looking. Not a bad effort though. I just wish that Paramount would rescan the original 35mm film (which is higher than HD quality) for TNG, DS9 and TOS. Paramount, if you're going to do this then PLEASE DON'T USE CGI SHIPS!! CGI is no substitute for real models!
@ssssroryssss2 The problem with using physical minature models is getting them to do all the things that these CG ships do in terms of combat and astrobatics. Without CG, the battles in DS9 and later would have been a logistical nightmare if not outright impossible to shoot.
@Bactchan I do see what you mean. I was referring to Paramount replacing footage of ships in TOS with CGI for the HD release. I hope when they turn TNG into HD, they don't use more CGI than when it was originally aired.
My compliment on the improvement of this video, i'm glad there were proper battles eventually other than against single borg cubes, which you saw barely any of it like in sector 001 and wolf 359
Damn this HQ quality is far far better than the DVD version, if only Paramount would actually spend some money of properly remastering TOS, TNG and DS9 to this quality!
I used a program called vReveal which can convert SD video into HD with a variety of enhancements. then I ran the output from vReveal through the VirtualDub filters Auto Levels->warp resize->MSU Smart Sharpen->2:1 reduction high quality. the source I used was just a mediocre quality internet clip (the same clip that I originally posted and that this was a "Video Response" to) so it would have come out even better working directly from the DVDs.
The only question I have is...where in the heck did you get an HD version of this? None of Star Trek except the recent films and Enterprise were filmed in this quality.
In any case, thank you! They stopped showing DS9 and VOY years ago so I never got to watch the dominion war or anything. This makes up for it!
at the beginning i count at least 4 ships that look like the enterprise...i thought it was the only one of its kind??? or are some others probably built for defensive purposes?
has anyone noticed how in all sci-fi shows/movies, the toughness of ships always seems to go down exponentially with increasing fleet size?
Wrath of Khan / Nemesis - a fight between two ships seems to last about 14 hours
DS9:SoA - 150 ships destroyed on both sides in the first 30 seconds

Your attempt to upscale the original video made this look really muddy and blurry- particularly the ship textures.

I like how in these giant DS9 battles, shields just go out the window. I mean, shields? Who needs those
