AT&T since replaced the Motorola 2210 with the Motorola 3360, which looks like it is an improvement. The 3360 has more cooling slots on the cabinet, and it doesn't feel as hot as the 2210. My 2210 failed after using it for 14 months. If the 3360 fails, I will seek out a different brand of modem that would work with AT&T's DSL service. I have no complaints about AT&T DSL (Time Warner's Road Runner service, at least in my area, was worse)...it's just that AT&T issues crappy modems.
I ended up cutting the entire top off, the fins on the side (that are barely openings at all in the first place), and cutting a hole in the bottom. AND, as a just in case measure, I keep a small desk fan next to it. So far so good.
For those out there looking to do this mod, a #1 Philips screwdriver and a Dremel will make this a 2 minute job. If you don't have a Dremel, then I'd remove the top portion of the plastic housing and just run the internals in the bottom half ;)
@wiggyx Hm... I ended up taking MINE into the front yard and beating it with a large metal pole. Then I called ATT and told them that if they sent me another 2210 I was going to break it, shit in the box, and mail it back to them. They sent me a 2-Wire the next day. Problem solved. I actually recorded that beating a few years back.... see my channel for details...lol
This is why the ree light comes, because of the overheating? Please let me know mines is driving me crazy... But i also had the 2wire and did the same shit. Help pls
I just drilled a bunch of holes on top of mine and attached two 50mm fans to it running quietly 24/7 on 3 volts. Modem is cool to the touch now and it's sitting on top of my router. Haven't had a problem since and it's been over a year now. Just need to clean the dust out every couple of months.
The kid is a trip! I bought this and it is CRAP! The ATT repair checked it out and sure enough..blasted. Anyway, I babied it and it flashed out in 3 weeks.
I figured someone posted a video about this modem. It really is poorly designed. In fact, my friend and I were discussing the possibility of putting a small fan on it to cool it off. I see we aren't the only people to have this issue.
@pcwalker I posted a video about this video on one of my other accounts a couple of years ago. I just reupped it today...lol. I hate this piece of shit. It's more fun to beat them with a pole or put them in the microwave then trying to fix it.
@WildlifeSeriaLKiller I agree. I posted one as well (I don't know if I left it public or not, long story). I did finally get around to putting a fan on it, but it is just too much of a piece of shit. It gets so hot (about 165°), the small components don't have more heat tolerance. They finally stopped selling it at Wal-Mart for the rip-off price of $45.
@CenTexVideo lol. No problem. Yea, I burned up three of them. They wasted time and money sending AT&T out to my house three times to check shit. I kept telling them over and over I needed a new modem OTHER than the 2210. FINALLY after calling after hours I got to talk to an outsource company from another country and they sent me a 2wire router for free. I told them I would drop my service, cancel my phones, and file a formal complaint if they tried to send me another 2210.
I did a fan mod on mine with it running 24/7, what I basically did was took the modem apart, drilled a bunch of holes on the top half, used double sided tape to secure a 50mm fan on top of the holes. The fan is set up as an exhaust, so hot air comes out through the fan and cool air gets sucked in through all the ventilation slits on the sides and bottom so there is airflow across the entire circuit board. After this, my modem only gets a little warm and it's sitting on top of my router.
i bought this exact same modem at best buy in april 2010 for $100. The reason why i didnt buy it through at&t was because they are very cocky. Now it is disconnecting on me every 10 minutes. I just called AT&T and they just told me total BS. i guess i will just buy a $40 modem and it would probably work better than this. I always trusted motorola but i dont trust their modems now. >:o
hey guys, just like many of you, i have been having this problem too, somehow i managed to fix it, i will upload a video later tonight.i don't know if this method will work for everyone so i would appreciate if you guys gave it a shot and report your results

DO NOT BUY IT!
Why not just use a dremel tool & cut it up?
Now I am considering just putting a fan on it.
Thank youy
