  • that is damn impressive =D

  • That whistle is pure music!

  • What kind of combustion efficiency are we talking there? 40?

You'd think someone could have found a way to admit some air above the fire, especially for such soft coal.

  • To clarify, I believe that is Artie's 5" Lunkenheimer 3 Chime. And David, Shay #3 had a Mann's Creek 3 Chime similar to a Crosby... 11 and 2 have also worn Crosby's in the past... The whistles change from time to time. So its never safe to say what the exact whistle is unless you ask the engineer. And to agree with yall, thats a beautiful Lunk, and no one better at the cord then Artie Barkley...

  • that is a badass three chime

  • Im originaly from West Virginia,And ive been there and rode the train up the mountain it brings back good memories!

  • That's a lot of smoke for a shay! What percent grade is it?

  • There I believe it is a 9-12% grade

  • shays #4,5, and 11 are all the same models right?

  • no only 5 and 11 4 is w/ 2

  • @Chessie9009 no there not shay 4 is a C-70 class shay shay 5 is a C-80, and shay 11 is a C-90 shay 4 is the lighest shay at cass , and shay 11 weighs 103 tons

  • You sure can hear that steam generator whining to power the headlight.

  • My Granddad owned a 287 acre farm that overlooked the town of Cass. Boy do I miss standing on top of Little Mountain and seeing that train wrap around the mountain and hear that whistle blowing. Brings a tear to your eye. I miss it so much.

  • That is one fine chu chu.

The cylinders seem to be set up differently that on most others I've seen.

  • yea... hands down great whistle... reminds me of how the EBTs sound....

  • I also heard that shay 5 will be done with restoration in April, and I think it will be running this railfan weekend.

  • 13 mph was the top speed of this loco.

  • that's cool.I just heard that when it comes out of the shops,it'll be doing the whittaker run for shay #6 because #6 is down for new flues and a new superheater.

  • Shay #6 may be up and running for Railfan in May. Shay #6 will be used on the Bald Knob runs this year.

  • Actually No.6 will be in Elkins for the centennial celebration of the WM depot as it's an ex-WM loco (july 08)

  • realy?

  • Artie Barkley at his best.

  • Artie is DEFINITELY one of the best whistlers that Cass has ever had, AND one of the most experienced engineers.

  • That has to be the greatest 3-chime I've ever heard!!

  • actually that was the old whistle of Mt Emily uber # 1 (Former Cass Scenic # 3)

  • I think this whistle wasn't from Cass shay 3 the whistle is high pitched.

  • close isn't it?

  • @Strasburg1991 is a lunkemhimer 3 chime shay 3 i belived had a crosby 3 chime
