when i do this the guy always gets his leg through and puts me in half guard, what do u suggest i work on?

Try one of two things:
1) put your arm that is closest to his legs on the same side of his body (and up against his hip) that your legs are on
2) touch your knee that is closest to his legs up against his hip while keeping your weight down on his chest.
