@x1ofakind1x basically all overdrive does is save gas. Say your cruising down the interstate at 65mph, it will shift up to 4th gear to lower the engine rpms thus giving you greater fuel efficiency. If turn overdrive off you will notice that it will downshift back to 3rd gear and the rpms will go up. Pretty much any modern automatic transmission has this feature.
i used beat the living shit out of my old 03 camry 2.4 all the time back when i had it (it belongs to my younger brother now). it still never left me stranded on the side of the road, and hasn't done that to my brother either. these things are bulletproof. the equivalent of 240K miles, all original parts, nothing but standard maintenance.
@AzNtacoSAUCE yea man, mines got about 88k miles on it now, and the only thing we've had to have replaced on it was the A/C compressor about 2 years ago. Other than that all original parts, and to top that off, it's been through 2 pretty major wrecks and it still runs like new
@AzNtacoSAUCE My mom has a 92 camry le that has 280,XXX miles on it and everything on it is the stock parts that came with it. We actually recently took it camping. LOL! It was a good 200 mile travel to the mountains from my house. You don't mess with Camry's. They are unbelievably CRAZY! They are hands down the best made car in the world.
@kenlee93 I agree to an extent, but Toyota has really slipped in quality with the newer generation Camrys... granted they are still a lot better than many cars on the road. But NOTHING beats the 80's - 90's Toyotas as far as reliability goes. One of my good friends had a 94 Camry XLE V6 and when he finally got rid of it, the thing had over 340k miles on the clock.
@th3ha1og0d I really hate people that say that, mainly because that problem was mainly with the Prius, and the other reason is because Toyota probably fixed that problem by now.
@th3ha1og0d You know, Ford, and Chrysler both had that problem a while ago too. Also, Chrysler transmissions killed people, Ford cruise control modules ignited, Chevy Impalas spontaneously combusted. I'd rather a 90HP car have a stuck accelerator than be constantly worried about random fires and explosions. Finally, just because 5 cars made by Toyota had this issues, doesn't mean all of them from all year models did. You're a complete idiot.
@th3ha1og0d Why don't you look at a goddamn video about it?! You're such a useless, fucking moron.
The transmissions in Chrysler vans and cars didn't have a brake-shift- interlock mechanism, fucker, which means that ANYBODY in the van could shift it into ANY GEAR and cause the car to move. That means kids ran over their Mothers, the shifter constantly slipped out of park.. etc. Dumbass, ignorant twit. GO FUCK YOURSELF.
@th3ha1og0d are you listening to yourself? Do you even know the situation that many of the parents were in when those accidents happened? NO Even if they did make the stupid mistake of leaving their unattended children in the car, do they deserve to die for it? NO Are you perfect and never make any mistakes? HELL NO
@92ASC and with your logic, I could use your own bullshit propaganda against Toyota by saying that anyone who pushed the accelerator down far enough to stick was obviously intending on breaking the speed limit, so they deserve to die too.
@th3ha1og0d THE SAME FOR THE PEOPLE WHO CAN'T STOP A 90HP CAR FROM GOING 120MPH INTO A GODDAMN BUILDING. Motherfucker, I just used you to prove my point.
yeah i was dead set on a 2002-2005 camry.. man for some reason it was hard finding a SE model too! LE's are everywhere, XLE's are really nice too i dig the woodgrain, but most XLE's i found where V6's.. I like the 4cyl too cause they are so easy to work on.. i'll upload some vids of my SE sometime, just put 5000k HID's in, about to change the fog light bulbs now..
Just picked up a 2003 Camry SE 4cyl auto for my wife.. Awesome car, but definetly slow as hell.. Of course my last car was a twin turbo SC300 .. and i have a GS430 for myself, so even though the camry is fun to drive, it feels like a pig..
haha yeah, it is a pretty big car to be powered by a little160HP 4cyl, but it's still fast enough to get out of its own way. Plus 27+mpg is always nice :)
BTW I envy your GS. I have always loved the GS series and I really would like a 2nd gen GS300 but unfortunately I'm just a broke kid lol. I definitely want my next car to be a RWD sedan tho.
Yeah i'm selling my GS430 now so we can use the camry for the family car.. damn i'm gonna miss the 430 :( but i will say the camry is a awesome car, i really enjoy driving it.
Man that sucks :( But I'm sure you will be saving a lot of money in the long run because Camrys are pretty inexpensive to drive. And it's also good that you got a <2005 Camry because sadly after that model year is when Toyota's quality started to slip. But you can expect you put 200k+ mi on your Camry no problem ;)
BTW if you're haven't already, you should join the ToyotaNation forums... lots of interesting info and builds to be seen :)
Was it a 4cyl? You must have seriously beat the hell out of it to blow the motor like that. It's very uncommon for something like that to happen to a toyota engine... unless u modded it a bunch and left the internals stock.
I'm not gonna lie, the second run was on a slight downhill grade. But on a good true run, this car is capable of 0-60 in the mid-low 8's. Still a decent time for a 160HP sedan of this size.
Actually it does help, it revs a little higher with O/D off. I've done other runs comparing with it on and off and it is always a little quicker with it off.
i have a 2002 toyota camry LE:] its quite a nice car for my first! but i was wondering what does the OverDrive do to the car? i never knew.

@92ASC so does turning overdrive off only affect the car's performance between 3rd and 4th gear? it wouldnt help the time much from 0-60?

Overdrive won't help your acceleration, it just drops your rpms when cruising on the highway for better mpg.
