people who say alex lifeson is the weakest player of Rush, don´t realize/ understand, how good he really is..his musical ideas are beautifull, unique and soulfull..
DAMN. Not even breaking a sweat, is he? Amazing. One of the reasons why Alex is one of my favorite people--not just musicians, PEOPLE--in the entire world.
Listen to Jacobs Ladder. To people who don't know much about playing guitar it will sound pretty decent. However, if you have ever picked one up and tried to play heavy and soulful it is a thing of beauty.
I'm still amazed at everybody trying to figure out what "song" or "piece" it is. It's nothing. It's an exceptional guitarist just warming up in the studio. That's all it is. Nor is it sped up. Some of the suggestions that it's "Hope" played fast just kill me. Can some of you guys simply not even tell one note from another? This is pure spontaneous playing on the fly without thought. When you've been an elite professional musician for over 40 years it's not that big of a deal.
Just wondering, not saying anything bad, but when you uploaded this did you like fast forward it? Again not like insulting Alex's skills, he's my god xD
When I first heard Alex Lifeson's playing, I didn't think much of it. I thought it very normal for a skilled rock guitarist like many were in the 70's and 80's.
Then I heard La Villa Strangiato. I am an asshole for having underestimated this man so gravely.
Alex is a big fan of Tommy Emmanuel and if you check out some of Tommy's videos you will see why.I definatly agree that Alex is underated but it is always by people who favor the mainstream,Page,Clapton,Hendrix exc.all of which are excellent in their own right but just different styles. Personally and I'm sure I will catch hell for this but I have always felt that Clapton was overated and guys like Alex, definatly underated! Just my opinion.
@Rick31797 It sounds a bit like he's riffing on Cripple Creek (most often played on a banjo rather than guitar). Most of the times I've seen it done on guitar were someone who was playing with finger-picks (like a banjo) - not as common to see someone doing it with a regular pick, at tempo. And he makes it look so easy... :)
Im a huge rush fan, my dad turned me on to then. im 13..haha too bad nobody my age knows about them. im fairly good at guitar, im learning the intro to hope on a 6 string.
Not only an electric guitar god, but an accomplished acoustic guitarist. Any guitarist I know started out on the acoustic and then went to electric later on. I'm sure Alex was no exception. Listen to Rush's acoustic work of "Resist". You can find it here on YouTube.
I agree, he is sooo underated, it's not even funny. Rush could not be without him and he could not be without Rush. Together they are the best musicians in the world, bar none. Everyone else says Neil/Geddy are the best drummer/bassest, but forget the colors and tones Alex brings to the table. I'm sorry but if EVH was in this group or Satch, they would suck. Only Al can complete them and he does. Top 10 GTR players in my book.
@buminbeer2 Yeah dude, I've always thought that. Whenever someone asks me what my dream band is, I just say Rush, and they're like "Alex is crap next to EVH or Hendrix or something" but literally no other guitarist could come close to Alex when it comes to forming a real ensemble.
If you guys have ever studied Neil's lyrics, you know where his influences in objectivism come from. I'm no disciple of anyone, but I'm running a congressional campaign that will be based on those same philosophies. I'd be much obliged if you'd all critique my video's for my campaign.
PS I also put a few of my old guitar solo's in there for you.
I grew up with this band but I sort of lost track of them as I don't listen to the radio ever ...and I am finding out these guys are real down to earth cats who each have a great story to tell ...I will always wish them well as they continue to set the bar in a world that seems to increasingly worship mediocrity they are not just rock musicians some hard core rush fans

yeah it kinda sucks, that when people talk about rush, its only about Geddy being the best bassist, or peart being the best rock drummer, no one ever talks about alex :(
I posted a song in video response called Flamethrower that I wrote many moons ago in tribute to RUSH and my favorite guitar player of the time ALEX LIFESON.
If anyone doubts the skill and talent of this 3-man group just do research and see the awards this group has collected together and as individuals. Very underated indeed. Alex Lifeson is incredibly talented and gives a great performance. Seen Rush several times. Each show better than the next
This is Lifeson bullshiting on the guitar, he is not playing anything he wrote. It's just practice, not "hope." Incredible.

I posted a song in video response called Flamethrower that I wrote many moons ago in tribute to RUSH and my favorite guitar player of the time ALEX LIFESON.
Still love his work - hope you enjoy the video.

If anyone doubts the skill and talent of this 3-man group just do research and see the awards this group has collected together and as individuals. Very underated indeed. Alex Lifeson is incredibly talented and gives a great performance. Seen Rush several times. Each show better than the next
