I like the idea of a one-way trip to Mars as a plan for NASA to explore. Long-term stays on Mars.... and learning to be self-sufficient on Mars, with supply shipments as needed.
When you cut out the costs of a return mission, it should make the Mars missions MUCH cheaper, and plus it leads to colonization of another planet... the ultimate dream for the space program.
@jmxgen Buzz Alrin has made this point too. There will be no shortage of interested people--announce you are looking for one-way colonists, and thousands will apply; just as happened with America's first colonies and the "go west or bust" pioneers.
I completely agree. And America has had the technology to do this for decades... there were plans to go to Mars from way back. The big question is why hasn't it happened?
In many ways, it seems like populating other planets - even with just small startup communities for now ... is the modern-day equivalent of Columbus discovering the Americas back in the 15th century. It's shocking how little action has been taken on such an important idea - and infuriating, to be honest.
