I love this peice, the fact he was antisemetic is netiher here or there. who cares about the artist's polotics or religeous beliefs? its art and therefore comes from emotion and feelings expressed by humanity and knows no descrimination. and plus its a little funny that he also hates jews and denies the holocaust. 6 million? really? look it to it more people
It doesn't make any difference to me whether Richard Wagner was antisemeti- his music is sublime. Why should we reject the work because of the failings of the man? There is no evidence whatsoever that there is any actual antisemitism in the librettos of Wagner's music-dramas, therefore it doesn't make any difference. Besides, music itself cannot express the particular (including antisemitism); it can only express universals. I don't HEAR antisemitism in the music; quite the contrary.
This was a gift for Cosima Wagner- the composer's wife- one Christmas at Triebschen. Perhaps the lovliest Christmas gift imaginable? This is certianly some of the most serenely beautiful ever composed and quite a contrast to much of the Maestro's intense music.
If hitler liked star wars than everyone would say it was antisemitic. You know, most of hitler's nazi friends actually were annoyed by having to listen to wagner all the time. Wagner had many jewish friends, just wanted to dig at his jewish rivals meyerbeer and mendelssohn. The founder of the zionist movement theodore herzl LOVED wagner. Because it's good. Frankly, you're all being cognitively lazy.
@ragmeankill I really do love Larry David's involvement of the tune in that episode of Curb, where he refers to it, starts to have it played for his wife's birthday, gets yelled at by that crazy dude for liking Wagner ... it has to do with not getting stuck on reductio at hitlerum - he doesn't care about that at all because it's such a beautiful tune, and the scene at the end of that episode, which I won't spoil, is just hilarious.
Eastern europeans are the ugly stepchildren of the rest of europe. I'm not sure if you're even white in Romania. Most of you are so mixed the best term of description would be mongrel. Romania is considered is mongrel country.
Are you therefore calling the birthplace of European civilization, the Balkans (Greece, Eastern Roman Empire, Byzantine empire, Latin Empire, etc a mongrel area?
You're out of your mind.. You should study your history a bit more and not go along with the false leftist propaganda that claims eastern Europeans are mixed race and should accept gypsies, Turks and other third worlders as equals
Idiot, the Eastern Roman empire and the Byzantine empire were the same thing. And yes most of central and eastern Europe is mongrel precisely because it was one of the main crossroads of the Eurasian system. This led to diverse groups of people to the area and from the area. At least get your facts right before you start moving your jib. Now you just look like a fool.
@MrPontiusPilate Your scribblings are more offensive than the worst smell you can imagine. Something smell bad to you? Cross your legs. The best part of you dribbled down your mother's leg, when she clamped up having had a premontion you were a bad one and a bad idea to let happen.
@CarletonConfused I've been dissed and flamed to ashes for many a comment I've made on YouTube, but just had to say that yours, this week, if not this month or past 12 months, takes The Gold Medal for the most ridiculous. (... and Carleton, dear boy, 'songs' are sung and usually have lyrics - this, this is a 'piece.')
I know of very few renditions (I have the EMI - CD). Which one don't you like? The Meistersinger b/c it is - wonder, wonder - slow? I do like 'em all (but yes, it does not count alot, I like Celi in general).
@sabadabaduz I also like Celi VERY much, but sometimes he does things which are totally absurd or irritating; now, I don't remember exactly which of Celi's recordings made me think that he was not particularly good at Wagner... In fact the only other performance I find on Youtube, the Tristan Prelude, is not that bad, but it has not the fire that such a piece should have, it sounds a bit cold and aloof.
Looks like John Wayne.

Wagner didn't dislike Jews, he just disliked Jewish culture. He was still one of the most brilliant musicians who ever lived
