  • i just downloaded this to my R4 lol

  • im a second year japanese language student? would this be something handy for me to have?

  • Does this work on an american ds?

  • why do you wait for the letter to show up before writing in the second box?

You can write much faster without waiting for it to pop up!

  • It's be great if there was a currency converter too :X

  • Go this game for 20 bucks in Japan! Yes, I hope its good! Go GEO!

  • I've had this software for a while, but the kanji recognition kind of sucks. I just bought a Casio EX-WORD XD-A6500 with near-perfect kanji recognition.

  • This program is absolutely fantastic. If you want o translate Kanji you have to know the stroke order, but if you study basic Japanese first you get the general hang of it.

  • All of these features are in Dictionary 6 in 1 for DSi and there are 6 languages there and a camera feature XD. Do you know how many words this one has? Also, does it tell you both, on yomi and kun yomi readings?

  • roflmao touch screen fail i have the same problem in the brainage 1 & 2

  • 3:06

    homo

    Heh

  • I love the commentary on this, good sense of humor.

  • He can't even write the Latin alphabet correctly; no luck with Kanji.

  • Yes, you need to learn the correct stroke order of the japanese characters, otherwise it will almost never guess what you were trying to write. If you write them in correct order, it is almost perfect.

  • Where the hell did you get this for 35 dollars???

  • The reason why it's not recognizing his characters in the video is because he is writing the strokes in the wrong order. If you write the strokes in the correct order, the program is very good at guessing the character.

  • Exactly! I bought the game and sometimes, it doesn't recognize my hiragana (I'm new at that) so I change the order and... it works!

You just have to know the order and the number of strokes used. Then, even if you write is BAD, it will recognize it. Also, the last character you wrote may be changed by clicking on it. So if the character you wrote was not recognized, it may be in the "suggestion" list.

Awesome game. It's really nice to learn hira/kana, japanese words & kanjis!

  • Does it pronouns the Japanese Kanji for you?

  • i cant understand why your saying you like this game. almost everything you wrote it couldnt recognize! that would drive me insane

  • It's mostly because of his bad handwriting, as even he admits. I have this and it rarely ever misreads what I want to write, whether in English or in Japanese. Seriously, this is an amazing dictionary and much cheaper than buying a dedicated J-dict.

  • The game onnly recognizes GOOD STROKE ORDER!

  • its because I (a human) couldn't even understand what he was writing, I agree the t being an f, its understandable. I've used this for kanji such as 新 and I drew it horribly (with a computer mouse) and I said, "If it recognizes this I'll be supprised" and it did.

I can't wait to get a DS for this.

  • Thanks for the video :) I'm moving o Tokyo in September and am looking for a cheap electronic dictionary

  • help! for some reason i can't input kanji on my "kanji sonomama rakubiki jiten" software, only kana and english. does anyone else have the same problem? and how should i remedy this? thanks in advance!!!

PS. my version does not say meikei(?) on the top screen like yours did on 0:19. does it make a difference?

  • I love this program. I may be posting a video of it sometime in the future.

In my experience, if the stroke order is correct, it reads it correctly 95% of the time.

  • THIS IS WHY WE LEARN THE STROKE ORDERS, PEOPLE!!

It's a nice overview. I have this game and I'm using it right now for my essay (in Japanese). It's much faster and easier to read than the stuff in my physical dictionary.

  • 2) It's worse than an electronic dictionary for foreigners learning Japanese. Here's why: there is no "jump feature" to jump to Japanese dictionaries. Trust me you use "jump" all the time. There is only "jump" for English words to English dictionaries. That was just lazy and shortsighted for them to leave out, as they thought only Japanese would be using this program. (Ex. You look up a word E->J and you can't read a character in the definition. You need jump. You look up a word in J->J, etc.

  • Here are my thoughts on this for anyone thinking about getting it:

    1) The character recognition system is very bad, you see when he wrote "r" and it thought it was "d", well now think about trying to get it to recognize a 26 stroke character in Japanese. There are other games that have superior, almost perfect recognition technology. (Nozotte Oboeru series, ex.)

  • yeah dude. kanji sonomama is "stroke sensitive"

it says all over the place.

  • Ahh! Ahhhh!! Stroke order!

  • Thanks. I was just wondering if I should buy this at playasia this weekend, and I guess I will be doing just that. Thanks for the video!

  • thank you for this video! it will help me during my japanese language exams :)

  • Thanks for posting the informative video.

  • hahaha yea, your writing is quite bad

    but good review =D

i will get this for my japanese studies!

  • Your stroke order is really messed up?! -.-

  • your strokes are all wiggady-wack.

  • no offense, but you write your japanese kinda wierd.

  • Thanks for the upload! I'm still trying to debate over buying this or the canon v80... any suggestions?

(btw, I think the only reason the DS can't pick up your characters is the stroke order...your writing isn't bad and I've met many Japanese who write much more illegibly!)

  • Is it possible to look up kanji by radical? Thanks!

  • If you have decent hiragana writing skills and know JLPT level 4 vocabulary and kanji, this dictionary is very easy to use.

  • Using Japanese dictionaries in language classes is a huge cop-out that the student is welcome to attempt, but no serious teacher should resort to it without giving up on proper J-E immersion.

The majority of Japanese adult students glue to their electronic dictionaries like life support. Understandably, low-level students of any language need grammar structure given in the native tongue, but Japan has no shortage of grammar professors. Your job as a foreigner is to provide immersion.

  • instead of writing the japanese over and over, how about you just practice writing them so they don't look like crap

  • Did you never practice hiragana writing? You should do it, your hiragana (the ka especially) is horrendous.

  • Not that your handwritting is bad, its just that your stroke orders were wrong.

  • hello mister genius:P.. i got this game for myself but i cant understand few meaning on the lower screen could you translate them?

  • Great video review. Thanks for uploading this to youtube.

  • are there any programs similar for beginners? I can read katakana, hiragana and kanji but I don't know what I'm reading.

  • lol, you need to learn proper stroke order...it'll probably help you find your characters faster...

  • yeah I just got that since I have trouble with the kanji reading but it's really confusing at the moment...

  • LOL i bought this off ebay!!! ARRIVING SOON!! ..i need it cause i wanna get ahead of my jap class in kanji XD

  • Is there a game like this that can teach english speakers, Japanese?

  • i've been studying some japanese in my spare time, something like this would come in handy oneday.

  • soo english can use this to learn japanese lol

  • "a alarm" lol .. i bought the game though thanks :P

  • cool. although i wouldn't understand all the characters. I need a game for nintendo ds for english people that will help me with katakana, hiragna and kanji. Which would help me to read sentances and write etc as I don't live in Japan. It would be brilliant seeing as it's a writing pad and has a microphone.

  • i didnt know you can put no right in front of something.I would have spelled it Kanji So no Mama Rakubiki Jiten :P

  • Cool review, I might try this out. Also what is Foregana? I only know of Katakana and Hiragana.

  • Furigana. Or the phonetic spelling of kanji.

  • ...what does phonetic mean?

  • google my friend

  • why did you keep trying to write a new letter when the little flab probably has the letter you intended to use?

  • wow cool

  • I want this program. Can you get it in America??

  • I'm glad you are still making videos, I always look forward to your videos the most. Please keep at it :D.

  • you can tap on the letter/character in the bar between the input and flipbook to see similar letters/characters

  • I can't believe I forgot that. Thanks for the info.

  • i love your reviews of games and software i wish you'd make mre, nice job

  • oh yeah, i mastered hiragana(for the most part, i can't remember the difference between re ne and wa) and i know alot of katakana, yet how am i gonna use this without kanji knowledge? the only kanji i know are ni, hon, and go.

  • blech, your ka came out as a se. how is that even possible?

  • sonomama sounda funny HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

  • Not bad.
