This is the most wonderful love story ever, even if it is sad, like you said. I cried more while watching Terminator than I did when watching Titanic. Awesome work, dude! I'm convinced Kyle realised he was to become the father of John Connor due to his dialogue in the Motel room where he said that he was given a photo of Sarah by John in the future but didn't know why AT THE TIME so I've always assumed that confirmed he figured it out and because of that, he expressed his love for Sarah right there on the spot. While his appearance in Terminator 2 was just a dream, he does say OUR SON so I think he knew.
