  • Awesome in every way!

  • Thank you for giving a voice to Lady Day, I wish I was fortunate enough to hear her sing, or had sense to ask my grandmother who she was when she was just a name . Great talent, many hate Amy Winehouse but in life and death the girl was just like her.

  • @georgiesgirl13 Fortunately, after a few years Amy will be remembered only for her beautiful voice and music. ;) Billie's speaking voice so strange...probably damaged by drugs.

  • "Cooking sewing, dusting..." doesn't sound like "settling down" to me-so glad the rigidity of gender expectations has loosened up so much since then! Easy to forget how narrow the world was for a woman-especially black, back then.

  • Thank you for finding this rare interview...there are times when she sounds clear and other times she is slurring is it safe to assume that she was high then?

  • She Married Mckay in 1957..So the interview has to between 1957& 1958

  • Thanks for sharing. Ive heard other interviews but never heard this one before.

  • Her way of speaking reminds me of Lester Young's.I heard him in some interviews i have, they have similar approach on bonding the words :)

  • Sounds like this interview could have been in the mid 50s...just a guess. Her speaking doesn't sound like I imagined. Great though!

  • Manifique

  • Thank you, Nigel, for all that you share!

  • mckay talks like a junkie also

  • @chucktown56 he was mckay juckie also. They went to jail in 56 that is when married her

  • she talk like a junkie

  • @chucktown56 She was a junkie. She was also brilliant.

  • To day Billie's birthday!! I come back to you 'cause your chan is great!thank you!so much!Happy birthday divine.

  • Thank you for providing this amazing interview. I have always loved Billie's music and was sadden by her death. I do appreciate hearing her side of her story.

  • so precious all you give to us all... many many thanks, so generous of yours, nigel!

  • Nicely done, Nigel. I'm always hungry for any footage of Billie or interviews where I can hear her speaking voice. Thank you for packaging & preserving history!

  • Rare and wonderful treat. she was my older brothers and sisters favorite, as well as my mom's. I was young when she died but I learned to love this uniquely brilliant woman. Thanks for this upload. Never thought I'd hear her actually speak!

  • wow what a voice

  • This is good! Wonderful to hear her speak.

  • She sounds high as hell....

  • i taped the 'billie on billie' documentary when i was 13 years old...must have watched it a thousand times! sadly, it's long gone now.....I remember at one point she said 'I'm scared all the time...you could say I'm scared to death'

  • Would anyone happen to know what the piece of music is that plays in the background at the end of this clip? If you know, thanks in advance.

  • @onefarenheit the music when the "credits" are rolling? Or when Lady is talking?

  • @nigel1034 The music that can be heard at the time 3:20 until the end of the clip. Does that clarify?

  • @onefarenheit It's called "Tell Me A Bedtime Story" by Herbie Hancock(:

  • @nigel1034 Thank you Nigel ! I'd heard this tune somewhere else before, and it's only because of you that I now know what its name is!

It's surprising to know it's Herbie Hancock. I've liked his music in the past, so it's interesting that I noticed a tune by him when I didn't even know it was 'him'.

  • @emilram Who are you saying is politically correct? If you're talking about me, then I understand.

I didn't totally ignore her singing. How could you know I totally ignored her singing? How could you know from where you are, exactly what is going on in my mind? But it's true that I'm not any kind of serious fan of Billie Holiday. Do you have a problem with that? I don't understand why you would.

  • Thank you soooo much !!!

  • God bless Nigel. Us younger Billie fans have been waiting for moons to hear rare interviews like this. I don’t know which is better, hearing Lady Day or seeing the super rare photos. We love what your trying to do, so please keep up the good work cause we wouldn’t hear this stuff if it weren’t for true fans like you. Those photos of Billie are FABULOUS and prove to my friends that Billie was GORGEOUS!!! How can I get a copy of your goodies?

  • omg!!...i luv this interview!!..billie u will forever live in my heart!!!....

  • I LOVE YOU SO MUCH THAT I CANT EVEN DESCRIBE

  • I am so happy over this! This is the first time I've ever heard her speaking voice, THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS! Wow!

  • Gracias por tu aporte!!Muy muy bueno.

    Desde buenos aires, Argentina.

    Intento humildemente, cantar jazz.

  • I'd love to see a remake of Lady sings the blue with Beyonce' Nowles. She would be perfect to play Billie Holiday!!

  • @CoolScoobydoo I'd pick Erykah Badu as Billie Holiday. She sounds more like her than Beyonce.

  • @CoolScoobydoo You're kidding right?? Beyonce does not have the same voice to play Billie..like another person said I think Erykah Badu would be more suited to play her

  • Billie was the best of all time...

  • Billie Holiday Forever ! XOXOXO

  • yeah she is awesome and beautiful! i have many pics on my facebook check it out! andrös byron

  • Ugh Louis McKay was a real dick. Why'd they have to ask that asshole questions?

  • this footage is absoloutely brilliant!!!

  • Excellent!!!!! I am a Billie Holiday fan and I just love this. She was the greatest jazz singer that ever live. IMO

  • Thank you for doing this and sharing it. I am a jazz singer. I have great love of jazz and the old standard's. I am always studying the Great's. So to her this woman's speaking voice was so humbling and lovely. I always wonder what it would be like if I were to sit down and have a conversation with Ms. Holiday. Today I was about to see just what it would be like. So once again thank you.

    Sincerely,

    Ms. Elayne Fontayne

  • @DebDeb208 , you're welcome(:

  • Wow. I remember the first time I heard this song sung by Billie Holiday. I was already a fan, but this pushed it over the top! It's very rarely on any compilations.

  • @andrewdcarter, you're welcome(: Thank you for watching

  • As long as I've been listening to Billie (since 02 when I was 14) I never heard her speaking voice, and I tried every place on the internet to try to find it... How did I miss this?? Thanx for finding it!!!

  • I love this clip! I didn't even know that these interviews were around. Great stuff you got here.

  • cool

  • Wow, I did not know these existed. Thank you so much. I can see why many of her friends thought so much of her. She seemed very regal, yet down-to-earth. Many of those pictures I had never seen before. She was just a beautiful person inside and out.

  • I really enjoyed seeing so many different photos of Billie Holiday because I am a true fan. Thank You

  • whats the song in the begining???

  • It is called "What Is This Going to Get Us" recorded by Billie around late 1939-1940.

  • did she mention Bessie Smith ? :)

  • Truly historical and a flash back in time. People and youngsters ought to know her life story. It´s part of america´s history. really cool. Rob Top Kiter.

  • im a youngster n 18 i feel in luv wit billie when i saw lady sing the blues i must admit i thought her voice was bigger because of they said aretha franklin had had the best voice since lady lady 2 me is my top 5 favorite singers of all time

  • Nigel1034, I am completely stunned by these interviews. I didn't think such interviews existed. Wow, you even have her husband speaking, what a treat. Billie is by far my most favorite singer. Anything that can reveal her unquie personality is a treasure to me. Thank you so much, Nigel1034
