The words were written by the actor Jacob Jacobs (1892-1972), and the melody composed by Alexander Olshanetsky (1892-1946), who wrote scores for plays and operettas in the vibrant Yiddish theater world on New York's Second Avenue. The song was written in 1932 for the play Ghetto Song (Yiddish) as a tribute to the famous singer Isa Kremer, born in Bălţi, who was probably the first to perform it.

Bardzo lubię to wykonanie. W Bełzie mieszkał mój dziadek. Kochał to miasteczko. Był Polakiem. W 1951 roku musiał pozostawić swoje rodzinne miejsce - zamieszkał po stronie polskiej w Mycowie. W każdy słoneczny dzień brał lornetkę i spoglądał w stronę Bełza. Tęsknota była silniejsza. Mojego dziadziusia już nie ma. Pozostała tylko piosenka , którą często sobie nucił jak nikt nie widział.

many jewish songs describe misery to beautiful tango rythms--prime example is papirosen. this oft sung Beltz is describing terrible poverty that the family abandoned. the poor house they lived in is now empty and rotted. but a child would only kno there was love and friends there near the river. the dreamlike melody reflects the positive life rythm that must triumph.
