  • In case none of you has noticed, CA is broke. We can't meet our obligations now so how in the world are we going to come up with 45 Billion for "high" speed rail? We don't have the money. We are in terrible debt now. Our credit rating sucks. We are laying off teachers and other workers. Just where are we going to get this money? If High Speed Rail made sense, it would get private funding but it doesn't make sense so Let's not waste the money.

  • we have people living from their cars, WTF. this is the LAST thing we need.

i am all for some kind of city linked maglev monorail but we are the first who will go into depression, we don't need this

  • Cruz Bustamante is looking pretty good right now, huh?

All you star struck losers fell for the "I will clean the house and pump you up!" bullshit. Thanks Cali! you EARNED it!

  • Prop1A-NO

    Prop 1B-NO

    Prop 1C-NO

    Prop 1D-NO

    Prop 1E-NO

    Prop 1F-Yes

We don't need high speed rail and we CANNOT affort it now. Nobody will ride this stupid train from LA to SF. It will never be build. If they did get funding it will go into the pockets of the scum bag lawyers who will fight this tooth and nail. Every passanger rail in the country is subsidized. BART is subsidized. This is a terrible idea. What's it cost to fly from SF to LA, $100 or so. Who will ride this train? Nobody.

  • juscurious, in the future, we are reqiuired need high speed rail. Otherwise we would spend money for additional airports and free ways, which is twice than the cost of high speed rail. And a lot of people rides on high speed rail in Europe and Japan, benefiting their country, why not the US?

Also, Prop 1A in Nov. 4th, 08 already passed. Prop 1A of yesterday (May 19th, 09) did not pass. Both props are absolutely different.

  • No we don't need high speed rail and few will ride on it. It will need permanent subsidies. Very few people will want to ride "high speed" rail in US due to the population densidy being much less in US than Japan. I've lived in Japan and they have a totally different system there and it is heavily subsidized by Japanese government. The proposed project has so many stops that it won't be high speed. The environmentalists will file lawsuits to stop this projects and the money will go to them.

  • Environmentalists? High Speed Rail in California actually HELPS the environment, let alone being an electric train. And so far, the train stops at cities, not in the middle of nowhere.

Plus, High Speed Rail is an alternate way to travel, we can't afford to buy more airports, more airplanes, more freeways if it costs 2x that of High Speed Rail if California's population extends greatly in the future.

High Speed Rail is NOT Amtrak, as Obama is using Amtrak across America for High Speed Rail.

  • "I've lived in Japan and they have a totally different system there and it is heavily subsidized by Japanese government. "

How long ago did you live in Japan? "Heavily subsidized by the Japanese government" was during the Kokutetsu era. The current Shinkansen operators are completely private exceot for Kyushu. And who says all trains have to stop at every station? The Shinkansen has about as many stops per station but they also have the "Nozomi" that doesn't stop at most of them.

  • If they can keep the TSA out of this it will be a moderate success at the very least. Even better if there's a seamless link to BART/Muni and Metro service at the two major metro areas.

  • JimmyJackJohnnyJose, that is a horrible argument. Prop 1A will protect the environment, alternative travel (Airports can be a hassle), catch up European/Japanese technology, begin hundreds of thousands of jobs (That's good during a recession), and patience will strongly benefit the economy at the same time.

And a smelly stranger? You could just switch seats, and the chances of a "smelly stranger" is 1 in a trillion because they wouldn't have the money to enter a bullet train for 3 hours.

  • i think this is good. it better be mag lift though! anything else would be stupid

  • Yeah. Put in a rail system because well...Amtrak isn't doing it right. Oh yeah...and airplanes are not safe. The CA voters were suckered into this crap by Arnold and the LA Mayor (Mr. Illegal Immigration).

  • Ron Paul wants to Legalize bud....i don't know if that such a good thing though.

  • yea it is. its gona but all drug dealers out of business. and plus the right to smoke and drink should not be abridged once your 18 or over. why is cannabis illegal in the first place? i find it unconstitutional

  • well yeah...i guess...but from what stand point are you looking at it from? i seriously don't see any benifets from it being legalized...the whole war on drugs is a joke. and its just gonna legalized for us to be taxed up the ass. a dub is probably gonna cost waaay more...i mean...burning herb is already pretty pricey...its gonna be more inconvient...its...just...pointless i guess.

  • look at it this way. people smoke marijuana anyway (not everyone but at least one in 5 smoke or have smoked or will smoke) its not as lethal as tobacco and unlike tobacco it can be eaten in and even used in foods and such. if it were to be taxed and sold our state will make good money out of it too

    lol imagine McCannabis

    ps: i don't smoke bud

  • i don't smoke either...well anymore at least...and i do see how it can be a new market and i do see that we will be making a little but more money...but at the end of the day...FDA will take control of it...they say thats good...cause the shit you buy now..."you don't know whats in it"...but fuck the FDA i don't trust them either. They're a bunch of crooks. but like i was saying...at the end of the day. its a extremely short term financial benefit on a extremely small scale.

  • look into the nawapa-plino. thats something that really needs to happen. and soon. i mean...really soon.

  • did 1a pass

i heard of it but i dont know if its true

  • This absolutely devastates me. Something this big should be voted on prior to having the ability to be passed by ignorant asshats in any Office. What they need to do is make Marijuana legal in California. Do you realize how much revenue California would have then? We would not only SAVE a huge amount of cash by not throwing innocent Adults in jail for possession of the harmless drug, but the state would also make hundreds of billions of dollars on the sale and tax of Marijuana. (continued....)

  • We can't just keep expanding highways and runways in California. High speed trains are by far the best overall mode of transportation because they do not pollute, they use clean renewable electricity, and are far more luxurious and less bothersome than air travel.

For those who say this project is too expensive and will put us in debt, that is a VERY bad argument because the cost of building highways and runways to meet the same travel demands is TWICE as much.

  • It may be the waste of money, but it would be woth it, because remember when they put the interstate highway in the U.S. it was like a waste of money at that time but the interstate worked well. If American put in interstates and highways, then american can put in High speed rail.

  • But during those 30 years, many jobs will be created while the other manufacturing jobs are bleeding to the other countries. How can the people spend more if they don't have jobs? Think about that! This state can't just rely on freeways only. Jeez.

  • Think about it. CA is no longer the "wild west." We're as metropolitan as any east coast state, and we NEED the infrastructure to support the massive growth we are experiencing.

Highways are overcrowded and polluting. Buses are inefficient. Amtrack just isn't working. California has to plan for the future, and this is one clean, safe, efficient way to do that. Think of it as an investment.

  • You are mistaken. This project will only take 10-12 years to complete the route from LA to San Francisco. It will take 30 years to PAY OFF THE DEBT on the project. That's about 650 million a year, for 10-12 years. That's 7.8 billion in maximum possible cost by the time the project is finished. We'll more than make up for the debt by generating massive profits from the system itself, and improving California's overall economy by reducing our oil needs.

  • you're hot. date me.

  • why is the sound quality so bad? argh

  • High speed rail is the future. Vote YES!

  • Aren't you from Whatever Hollywood?

  • PLEASE Yes on 1A. my family has been working on promoting this for 2 years now. Every evidence points to more clean and efficient transportation. Imagine a 2 hour and a half ride from LA to San Francisco instead of the conventional 4 by car. PLEASE. BRING THE BULLET TRAIN TO CALIFORNIA. WE DESERVE IT.

  • Why wouldn't it? High Speed Rail works great in Germany. I used it while in Germany, Sweden and the UK, how can you say people won't use it? I rather use the high speed train to the Bay Area from LA than find parking at LAX and then walking a couple of city blocks to the gate, nevermind the security check thanks to Homeland Security the biggest do nothing in the Federal Government. Vote YES! A Busta once said - TAKE THE TRAIN, TAKE THE TRAIN...

  • Why is it a waste of money? It works in Europe, Asia, and the North Eastern US (Acela). I use it all the time when I'm at those places for business and leisure. Why do I want to give oil companies my money.. driving my car or the put up with the stresses of flying. Also what about all the new jobs creating and running this system (forgot about that huh). Either you live in the middle of " no where land " and have no concept of the issues traveling to and around large mega city!

  • Many Californians think it's a waste of money because the state's alreading spending more money than it has, and the recent economic troubles didn't help either. You should know that this measure passed by with a 52% approval.

  • YES ON 1A
