I have PS2 version also,

You will see opponent cars driving around the city and they are marked with arrows on the mini map, if you drive up behind them, a icon will appear in the corner of the screen and if you press "UP" on the D-Pad you can start a distance race with the opponent, if you win, you get 100 bank, if you lose, you lose 100 bank

oh yeah...now i remember...just played it again and tryed to find some1...do u know u can actually lose all of the racers that are in free roam if you beat them all...they just dissappear
