  • Yep! The Local Government Act of 1972 (implemented in 74) made 'yonners' of the Salfordians of Prestwich, by placing them under the governance of Bury Council........no wonder he's miffed - Smith's no yonner!

  • Ahh! Now I see.

  • @RedBryn why are people from bury called yonners? also whats wrong with Bury? hope you don't mind taking time to answer.

  • @sharonwithtracey 'Yonner' is a colloquialism used by the urban northern English to refer to the natives of the surrounding Pennine towns. It refers to the old Pennine phrasing: When giving directions, a Pennine local would describe something "over there" as being "over yonder" - a phrasing both unfamiliar & amusing to those who live in the cities.

It's all light hearted banter, really.

Though South Manchester born & bred, I now live in Bury myself - I love the place, nowt up with it!

  • @sharonwithtracey In interviews MES has said it's because it's something he can others (especially his American bandmates) can relate too... As in 'at least we're not from Bury'.

  • it's official, that title is no longer just "bury"?

  • cheers for top work hanley. first fall gig i've ever seen sober... cracking venue and well worth the drive...shame it was midweek - also seemed plenty of others had driven = crowd atmosphere a bit flat. loving this gruppe line-up more n more
