  • ITS MEANING IN ENGLISH IS:

"YO, HEAVE HO! YO, HEAVE HO! ONCE MORE, ONCE AGAIN, STILL ONCE MORE, NOW WE FELL THE STOUT BIRCH TREE,

NOW WE PULL HARD: ONE, TWO, THREE.

    AY-DA, DA, AY-DA! AY-DA, DA, AY-DA!

AS THE BARGES FLOAT ALONG, TO THE SUN WE SING OUR SONG.

HEY, HEY, LET'S HEAVE A-LONG THE WAY. VOLGA, VOLGA OUR PRIDE,

MIGHTY STREAM SO DEEP AND WIDE."

DESPITE COMMUNIST IDEOLOGY, ART AND CULTURE SHINE WAY MUCH MORE THAN ANY POLITICAL SYSTEM.

  • @juliallanillo1 empires rise and fall, yet men still sing. the day that mankind stops singing, from the heart, is the day humanity has ended.

Спасибо @LHaritonov!

  • This never gets old. Absolutely fantastic.

  • 52900 Visits ... Congratulations @LHaritonov, All My Love For Leonid...!!!

    ^^

  • BEST OF THE BEST!!!

  • Is impossible not to hear this song and get a shiver. 2EUA got a shiver and doesn't liked

  • I saw last year Aleksanndrov ensemble and they were great! Now in my town some similiar choir is comming - Red army choir from St.Petesburg. Now I dont know if I should go with my familly, tickets arent cheap, but if this choir is good as Aleksandrov we will go for sure. So does anyone know how good they are? P.S. Mr. Haritonov has one of the most magical voices that I ever heard.

  • @RCBGMK I would definitely go!!! Because Red army choir from St.Petersburg has the same historical and musical heritage as the Aleksanndrov ensemble. Should be high quality performance. I have lived in USSR for 28 years.

  • This Is My Favorite Song ... I Love You Mr. Kharitonov !

    ^^

  • @labichaloca80 Thank you for your love and appreciation!

  • I always have this song in my mind. JUST SUPERB!!!!!

  • where can i find this version of the song Leonid is the best there is

  • @TimeLordXIII This recording is available in a CD released by Melodiya called "From Russia with Songs". I don't know whether the recording is available for download anywhere, though.

  • @alexandrovci I have this CD and I can tell you that there is no such song there. There's only Ej, Uhnem song performed by L. Kharitonov.

  • @LHaritonov Sorry, I was wrong and you were right. I meant another song initially... ))

  • @TimeLordXIII I guess that you can find it on the artist's official web site.

  • One of my top three songs :)

  • @Rhythmics101 Agree! ))

  • I am just grateful mankind invented methods of recording which enable me to discover and enjoy the talents in my fellow human beings, past and present, I would otherwise never know about. I love this video. How handsome Leonid is here and how unbelievable the voice. I watch it over and over. The stance and facial expressions evoke and compel pride and passion but not for the kind of blind patriotism that emits hate and denigration of others. Thank you Leonid for the pleasure of your voice.

  • @magicmysterytour

Thank YOU for such a great comment! I will deliver your message to Leonid Mikhailovich.

  • @magicmysterytour I have thought the very same thing many times listening or viewing footage that can only be described as sheer perfection.

  • @magicmysterytour Thank YOU for finding such precise words describing this song!

  • The Wikipedia article on Leonid Khartonov is excellent,

  • @lisa8220

Yes, it is! Thanks to "riverhouse2007" YT user for that! )))

  • @lisa8220 Yes! Thanks to Linda (YT user - "riverhouse2007")

  • I came across this after looking up Volga Boatmen and went on to explore the other Kharitonov uploads.

In this day and age Mr K. would be feted further than he was at the time ….but it would have been vastly more demanding than I am sure it already was.

Thanks Mr Kharitonovs Senior & Junior !

Interesting to compare with Paul Robeson’s version – I’m amazed how few hits youtube has on his recordings. Another gorgeous bass voice, he studied in Russia for a while and praised his experience.

  • @TereniaAnna Thank you for your comment! Once Leonid Kharitonov sang together with Paul Robeson. It was a concert given specially for N. Khruschev.

  • This song is amazing. I love this song!!!!

  • they looks like russians elite fighters called black coats!!!

  • His voice. This song. My soul weeps.

Communism, though noble in its intent, is built upon strife, and so granted further strife to Russia. Those of whom he sings deserved so much better. He has given them a timeless lament that is without sorrow. It bespeaks human dignity in the most dire circumstances. Yet his eyes proclaim hope. He has taken a song and made it a prayer. God was with him as he sang for there is more love in his performance than a hundred modern songs of self-gratification.

  • 1:10 Its incredible that he can hold a note like that while pulling a face like that....

I don't mean this in a nasty way, I love this song!!

  • Ovo je predivno... Veliki pozdrav iz Srbije!!! :*

  • ...the best performance of ,,EI UHNEM'' is with best voice of the XX. century Leonid Haritonov...

  • Oh my God, WATCH HIS BEAUTIFUL FACE, when he sings: TO THE SUN WE SING OUR SONG! It's like he is feeling the warm sun on his face, he even SMILES softly.... FANTASTIC! simply speechles... WHAT AN EXTRAORDINARY PERFORMANCE....greetings from Germany

  • @philosoful

Yes you can find this song on a CD if you look in the Discography (Дискография) section of the artist's official website.

  • I can listen to this song again and again and again. So amazing.

The video from 1983 where he performs "Along Peterskaia Street" is also one of my favorites, since it's one of my fav. songs

  • always when i hear this song i feel a shiver going down my back. KAPPSA & Leonid Kharitonov are an unbelievable Match!

  • @Stahlstiefel

  • @asdxxme

    Thank you!

  • this is your father?

    excellent!

  • @wtfhellas

    Yes, he is...

  • This is just so epic! Without understanding the language there is still so much feeling and emotion that comes across, this really proves that music crosses all boundaries.

  • @DominionOfTheSword

Thank you for this very nice comment! But the song has English subtitles! )

  • LHaritonov - Who did your father study with, in singing? He resembles Boris Christoff, more or less ... thanks!

  • @jhb134

Sorry, but I can't even tell... He had an individual education, I guess... But definetly not with Boris Chrtoff... )) Feodor Chaliapin was his main landmark...

  • @LHaritonov - (Chaliapin) - He was a genuine inspiration, in many ways. Other fine singers from the Russian past were Sobinov, Nikolai Mei-Figner, Mark Reizen and certain others. The great, Russian composers were many - Prokofiev, Moussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, et. al., but "Yo, Heave Ho" remains one of the great, simple Russian songs, as it builds in intensity. ... Thanks, and have a wonderful New Year!

  • @jhb134

Thank you very much for your comment! And I wish you a Happy New Year too! )

  • dude,

  • I have yet to find a version of this song so magnificently rendered. Pain, suffering, hope and pride all shine through. You have done us a great honour by sharing this with us. Thank you.

  • it makes me wonder who the idiot is who disliked such a beautiful song

  • The singing is just great, however I think the video would be better if it was filmed on a ship and them wearing sailors uniform. it would go well with the song. Greetings from Pakistan

  • @LordNadir1

    Thank you for your comment!

  • @jebarr7391ngc

Dear James! Thank you so much for your kind words! I wish you much strength, peace and happiness!

  • Does anyone know the name of the singer? He has such a marvelous voice!

  • @cathygentle Leonid Mikhailovich Kharitonov.

  • @cathygentle It's Leonid Kharitonov. See the song's title...

  • Fucking great

  • Also why does Flea just stand there not playing bass or jumping around?

  • Interesting...in 1st grade I was taught the lyrics were "Yo, heave ho, all together, yo heave ho."

  • It's strange to think that the misery of those poor serfs along the Volga could lead to something this magnificent; but I suppose that's life. Excellent singing by all, and my compliments to the choral master.

  • @weremensch

Thank you for your interesting comment! Unfortunately, the "choral master" Boris Alexandrov is gone long time ago...

  • @weremensch It's said that true talent usually comes from those who have suffered most in life.

  • @Katyusha666

    Sort of true.. ))

  • @Biogem369

  • Amazing voice. Amazing performance.

  • @philosoful

Thank you for your comment. This video was made from the original master copy.

  • @jebarr7391ngc Thank you my friend

  • I think this is one of the best version of "Song of Volga Boatmen" in the Youtube! The other one was also sung by Mr kharitonov in the concert held in Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow in 1965.He expressed the authentic feeling of those underprivileged people who still bear hope and courage to fight against plight with his powerful voice.Bravo!!!

  • @toast3631

Thank you for your interesting comment! I love that 1965 Tchaikovski Hall performance too!

  • Utterly wonderful! So, so, soooo powerful. LHaritonov, is this you in the video or your father sorry? One of my favourite singers of all time. Thanks for sharing!

  • @philosoful

  • what a voice!

    I love it!

  • @all4HSV Thank you!

  • Russia is the land of so much beautiful melodies! Like this one! And this performance is perhaps the most beautiful for this song I ever heard!

  • I agree with that! I heard so many versions but this is best! Kharitonov's voice is not only great but it has so fantastic expression and true man's power hidden inside. I can say only WOW! Also it seems to me that old versions are 100% better than the same songs in modern dress. I miss something in today's music ... maybe - heart? Passion?

  • @JanaMaffetka Thank you very much for your comment! Heart - is a good guess! )))

  • @puganufur Thank you! I like this gorgeous song too!

  • very good perfomance, i wish i could sing like that.

  • Thank you for your comment!

  • @LHaritonov

  • @joshuav2020 Thank you!

  • Fantastic. Totally fantastic.

  • @raven98c

    Thank you!

  • I disagree with your analogy on the rising and lowering of the volume as the song goes along. Remember these are men hauling a barge up stream. You are standing on the riverbank hearing them faintly down stream as they approach. As they near, they become loader and loader. When they pass, you then hear them become fainter and fainter as the pull farther and farther up river.

  • @bchapman1234

    Good interpretation! ))
