Why does every windows 7 seem to be so long on all youtube videos, they can't take care of there computer properly. Mine takes 15 seconds to boot and 5 seconds to log in.
@jdezan Really? Ive seen Windows 7 boot a lot faster than 32 seconds with an SSD. My laptop without an SSD can boot Windows 7 in 25 seconds... You must be doing something wrong mate.
you do realise ubuntu is one of the slower linux distros right? try something lightweight, like arch or gentoo, or if you want all of these to be blown out of the water in terms of speed, try a custom compiled distro.
@prisscoble i don't understand the whole fanboy boot club tbh. windows is bloated, but performs just as well as a general linux distro, in terms of speed, once it is up and running. you would have to really know what you are doing with a *nix platform to really show windows up. *nix kernels are a lot more stable, but their front ends leave a little to be desired at times.
@Snuskigaste hahaha, yes you are right. i use arch and i haven't upgraded my kernel in months because something always breaks. i was going to switch to bsd in the summer.
when done on the same machine it provides a decent way to compare speed of the OS, but part of that speed comes down to the hardware, not just the software. good video and yeah it'll be neat to see you redo this with 10.04 and 10.10 instead of the 9.xx ubuntu distros :) perhaps even ones with LXDE, XFCE,KDE, and Fluxbox (since you already showed off Gnome)
This test is only made to let you see how slow Windows 7's boot is compared to Ubuntu's, not to see which one is just better.
Anyway, on my computer Windows 7 actually takes 23 seconds to boot up, while Ubuntu takes 44 seconds. The only way to reduce that is to use a low resources DE, like OpenBox.
And, the screen's definitions on this video would make me think it has been made on some kind of virtual machine, to which a OS does not behave as it would do on a normal PC.
wait?!it looks like a fresh install and ubuntu 9.10 beats them all.and when i dual-botted windows vista and wndows 7 vista booted faster.it is because it loads aero snap, aero shake and aero peek.(atleast that's hat i think

both are 64bit, so it depends on the hardware but there has to be something seriously wrong with your HDD/ram/driver for windows to be so far behind on the same system.
I don't see that "same configuration" you talk about. Also every os taking so long, why? Mine initializes way faster than those 4 you shown.
Maybe you shouldn't run the 4 at once in virtual machines on the same computer, but make a true comparision in separate machines without running a screen recorder, for example.
Too much pseudoscience here =/. Did you configure the exact same services in each OS to be loaded at start? Are you running them in virtual environments? what hardware is that?
could have been a software update. i noticed ubuntus boot up has increased though too ever sense the new grub loader. ubuntu 10.04 coming out here soon will be even faster so dont worry, windows will be crushed again rofl. im not a big fan of linux but i do know if an os is good or not... some people are in denial cause they are stuck in one or to stupid to at least learn what else is out there. you can go free or pay 500 to get just a little bit of the same features.

man was sind das denn für schlechte maschinen! mein windows 7 (x64) startet mit bios in 30 sekunden und is voll einsatzbereit, sogar für spiele und programme!
also die sollten mal die rechner erneuern auf denen die testen!
Did you calculated the fragmentation of the boot volumes? If not, then make the calculations and come back later...
With my hardware, and of course after defragmenting the boot volume (with name order..) :
Ubuntu 9.10 still stays with 40 secs but win7 decreases boot time to 40-43 secs ;) Ubuntu 9.04 makes 46-48 secs and vista becomes worst of all with ~55secs...
Sequential reading from the hard drive is one of the most effective thing to boot the computer up...
a stupid linuxer?... A STUPID LINUXER?!?!?!? HOW DARE YOU!!!!!!! EVERY PERSON IN THE WORLD OWES THEIR LIFE TO EITHER PAUL HUDSON, MIKE SAUNDERS OR ANDREW GREGORY!!!! or err that umm other guy who err is a umm kde user *cough FAIL*. Yes, im talking to you Graham Morrison.
On a nicer note..... Awesome vid guys, just shows how much Linux and open source in general, kicks ass! :)
MY experience is completely different to say the least, I can only speak for windows now, but with vista its took 2:45 and with 7 its only 1:05 and thats from turning it on to a working browser, now granted I was running alot of start up files in vista while my 7 is relatively clean(a newer faster starting version of Firefox too)
Firefox is naively faster on linux based systems anyway, so there is a bit of a tilt in that direction from the start. What version of Firefox is it?
Yeah, and the hardware is inferior, the SO is OK, but youy had to pay an extra grand just to get that "elegant" look lol to hell with Mac, they steal your money lol
come on who gives a shit on the booting times. there a more important things to do than improve the Booting Time e.g better support for Hardware (blobs are sucking as hell), better integration of the console and much more but not goddamn booting times.
Windows 7 has a quite slow boot for the first 3-4 times you start it after the installation. I guess this is because it hasn't cached most of the stuff it must load yet. After that, it's even faster than XP, and, what is more, it's already responsive when it's still loading stuff. Try it to believe it.
Vista with sp2 is really good -- my laptop never had issues. But I have to agree with the video that when it comes to full utilization of the 64 bit, ubuntu will beat both vista and win 7 ---- even on a live ubuntu cd -- it's crispy.
In case there is misunderstanding, I do not mean Ubuntu will beat Win 7 running on a LIVE CD - that's not possible. Just that it works good (even on a live cd) when you use a 2.2 Ghz dual core, 4gb ram, a good card like 7600 Gforce Nvidia graphic card on a 64-bit "entertainment" class notebook running a 64-bit os.
As a sole test it's not that interesting when there's no great differences. More interesting would be if you have some large 3d game that took a while to load and whether you were able to put the system on standby while running that game and resume it without issues later. And also quit the game, then re-run it later to see how the OS utilizes available memory to cache it. There are some very large differences in how Vista and Windows 7 caches apps and in some cases Vista is faster than 7.
Nice to see a *real* boot test. Most of them only show the boot until login, but a test is only relevant if you measure how long time it takes until the main app (i.e. web browser) is up and running, just like this test!
Unfortunately, I recently overdosed on command line stuff and forum members who insist on telling me *what* to do instead of *how* to do it, so I won't use Linux again in the near future.
no one is trying to switch to ubuntu, what are you talking about? this is just a boot comparison of the most popular operating systems excluding leopard.

У меня Ubuntu 9.10 за 15 секунд загружается, Виста - за 30.
My Ubuntu loads in 15 src, Win Vista - 30 sec.
Ubunter7 2 years ago
Did you calculated the fragmentation of the boot volumes? If not, then make the calculations and come back later...
With my hardware, and of course after defragmenting the boot volume (with name order..) :
Ubuntu 9.10 still stays with 40 secs but win7 decreases boot time to 40-43 secs ;) Ubuntu 9.04 makes 46-48 secs and vista becomes worst of all with ~55secs...
Sequential reading from the hard drive is one of the most effective thing to boot the computer up...

What version of Firefox is it?

what are you stupid?
LuigiPeach 2 years ago
nah,
hibernate your windows 7 system. and then boot it again
win 7 boots so fast after hibernation
DocL33t 2 years ago
That doesn't call boot.
lucasp0927 2 years ago
n3wb
DocL33t 2 years ago
OMG, if you HIBERNATE, then you aren't BOOTING a system... Otherwise it would've been a Hibernation speed test. It has nothing to do with booting...
LuigiPeach 2 years ago
Thank you for timing these on the shittiest computer you could find in a dumpster.
Real accurate.

Why you didn't put the OSX in the race? It should be cool know more about it
AppLeo1990 2 years ago 2
come on who gives a shit on the booting times. there a more important things to do than improve the Booting Time e.g better support for Hardware (blobs are sucking as hell), better integration of the console and much more but not goddamn booting times.
slaverrich 2 years ago 2
I agree completely, they all have sub 1.5 min. boot times, and the 30-20 s difference won't make me switch my OS.
AhFergus1 2 years ago 2
Windows 7 has a quite slow boot for the first 3-4 times you start it after the installation. I guess this is because it hasn't cached most of the stuff it must load yet. After that, it's even faster than XP, and, what is more, it's already responsive when it's still loading stuff. Try it to believe it.
BlackAntitoon 2 years ago 3
great job for manipulating win 7, i have never seen it start that slowly, but i guess this is what we should get from linux fanboi?
Moksulini 2 years ago
Impossible, vista more fast of 7?
Bah!
Certainly you have installed a strange version or this is a error...
I had Vista on the same computer 7 beats, is twice as fast!
halfshadow89 2 years ago 2
Vista with sp2 is really good -- my laptop never had issues. But I have to agree with the video that when it comes to full utilization of the 64 bit, ubuntu will beat both vista and win 7 ---- even on a live ubuntu cd -- it's crispy.
TheDahlakArchipelago 2 years ago
In case there is misunderstanding, I do not mean Ubuntu will beat Win 7 running on a LIVE CD - that's not possible. Just that it works good (even on a live cd) when you use a 2.2 Ghz dual core, 4gb ram, a good card like 7600 Gforce Nvidia graphic card on a 64-bit "entertainment" class notebook running a 64-bit os.
TheDahlakArchipelago 2 years ago
LOL
win7 32bits in my Celeron D start faster than this
guilisk8 2 years ago
As a sole test it's not that interesting when there's no great differences. More interesting would be if you have some large 3d game that took a while to load and whether you were able to put the system on standby while running that game and resume it without issues later. And also quit the game, then re-run it later to see how the OS utilizes available memory to cache it. There are some very large differences in how Vista and Windows 7 caches apps and in some cases Vista is faster than 7.
fourbarposer 2 years ago 3
Nice to see a *real* boot test. Most of them only show the boot until login, but a test is only relevant if you measure how long time it takes until the main app (i.e. web browser) is up and running, just like this test!
Unfortunately, I recently overdosed on command line stuff and forum members who insist on telling me *what* to do instead of *how* to do it, so I won't use Linux again in the near future.
niknil9000 2 years ago
Oh yeah, gonna die for 20s more, I'm gonna go switch to Ubuntu right now!! thats for this great video!
