  • my pc rocks with windows vista but with windows 7 SUCKS!

  • Put a Debian on this competition and it will Win.

  • my nokia 3210 bots in 9 secs

  • It`s not a true. Windows 7 is faster than vista!

  • 1:05 did you see the clock

  • Why does every windows 7 seem to be so long on all youtube videos, they can't take care of there computer properly. Mine takes 15 seconds to boot and 5 seconds to log in.

  • Tiny core on ssd 4 sec

  • @themokeykid in your opinion.

  • With a SSD of 120GB my Windows 7 Boot up in 32 seconds. Compare all of those OS with Mac OS. My MacBook Pro (without SSD HDD) can boot up in 38s.

  • @jdezan Really? Ive seen Windows 7 boot a lot faster than 32 seconds with an SSD. My laptop without an SSD can boot Windows 7 in 25 seconds... You must be doing something wrong mate.

  • My ubuntu boots in 20 secs!

  • ok you computer sucks for Win7

cause for me it boot faster

and win7 needs a good pc not a lame one

  • W000T??? Vista faster than w7???

  • It depends on the COMPUTER not the OS. Now get your butt in the shame water.

  • every operating sistem is a good sistem

and i have win 7 and they works very good

its depending of the computer and not from the operating system ..

    ur video sucks

  • Ubuntu Rokx!

  • lol my win7 starts soooooo much faster than that :O

  • WT..... Windows 7 is faster than Vista??? No logic in this video. Good for Ubuntu

  • you do realise ubuntu is one of the slower linux distros right? try something lightweight, like arch or gentoo, or if you want all of these to be blown out of the water in terms of speed, try a custom compiled distro.

  • @LemonPieLoL Sure, it's one of the slowest... which just goes to show that the slowest Linux distro is STILL faster than windows.

  • @prisscoble i don't understand the whole fanboy boot club tbh. windows is bloated, but performs just as well as a general linux distro, in terms of speed, once it is up and running. you would have to really know what you are doing with a *nix platform to really show windows up. *nix kernels are a lot more stable, but their front ends leave a little to be desired at times.

  • @LemonPieLoL

in *nix I hope you don't include Linux?

The only known *nix "based" OS I know that has a 100% stable kernel is BSD.

  • @Snuskigaste hahaha, yes you are right. i use arch and i haven't upgraded my kernel in months because something always breaks. i was going to switch to bsd in the summer.

  • @LemonPieLoL Good thinking, mate!

  • win 7 wtf!!

  • when done on the same machine it provides a decent way to compare speed of the OS, but part of that speed comes down to the hardware, not just the software. good video and yeah it'll be neat to see you redo this with 10.04 and 10.10 instead of the 9.xx ubuntu distros :) perhaps even ones with LXDE, XFCE,KDE, and Fluxbox (since you already showed off Gnome)

  • Instead of Ubuntu 9.04 you should have done Mac OS.

  • @TechHelper87 *cough* HAHAHAHAHAHA

  • This test is only made to let you see how slow Windows 7's boot is compared to Ubuntu's, not to see which one is just better.

Anyway, on my computer Windows 7 actually takes 23 seconds to boot up, while Ubuntu takes 44 seconds. The only way to reduce that is to use a low resources DE, like OpenBox.

And, the screen's definitions on this video would make me think it has been made on some kind of virtual machine, to which a OS does not behave as it would do on a normal PC.

  • Nice way to show differences :)

    Keep up

  • So, Win 7 is gd

  • 1 place:40 seconds

    2 place:51 seconds

    3 place:67 seconds

    4 place:72 seconds

  • What is a purpose of this test? An USB-stick with DOS boots in less than 5 secs. Is it an epic unrivaled OS?

  • wait?!it looks like a fresh install and ubuntu 9.10 beats them all.and when i dual-botted windows vista and wndows 7 vista booted faster.it is because it loads aero snap, aero shake and aero peek.(atleast that's hat i think

  • i learned something you know what.. updating your BIOS helps the pc boot up faster.. i dont know if anyone tried but i did and it boots up faster :!

  • Lol, Windows Seven slower than WIndows Vista?! Sorry, but I think ur lying...

Btw, I am using Ubuntu 9.10 nao and its way faster than any Windows... But I'm dowloading Windows 7 64 bits... Guess y? bcuz Windows is for gamers and oh well, im a gamer too! 8D Maybe I change my mind b4 uninstalling Ubuntu but I miss my fav game which is available only for Windows... :| Greetings from Brazil~! ^_^

  • @acacioscBR no microsoft has admitted windows has a slow boot up they're going to address it for windows 8 apparently

  • @acacioscBR i know it is hard to believe windows vista is slower than 7, but actually windows 7 loads aero snap, aero shake and aero peek.if i'm wrong, please correct me.but vista beating 7 is very true

  • Boot up doesn't matter, just to say.

  • That is so not true, Windows Vista is slower than Windows 7

  • @Windows7Fan1 apparently not :P

I know, everyone always finds it hard to believe that Vista is just a bit faster than 7 :)

But Ubuntu 10.04 will beat them all..fo sho

  • wow everyone's always bitching about how much faster Windows 7 is, I was pretty surprised to see it came last. How did it get beat by Vista? But as an Ubuntu 9.10 user this video pleases me.

My windows using days are over. Well I still have some XP machines but by the time support for XP SP3 runs out in 2014 I reckon Linux will be good enough for all my computers. A lot can happen in 4 years. Windows is dying, you'll see.

  • Ajam. Todo muy lindo. Suponiendo que 'huvuntu" carque mas rapido. O sea.

    Best regards! :D

  • lol this is windows 7 on a REAL SLOW pc

i cant even see the logon screen

and the windows logo apears for like 1 second

  • @Cqub3 now imagine if u were on ubuntu the fucker would start b4 you touched the mouse

  • THIS IS FUCKING CRAP IDIOTS.. IT COUNTS THE FUCKING LOADING TIME OF BROWSER, VISTA WINS THAT FUCKING USELESS SHITTY UBUNTU THATS NOTHING YOU CAN DO YOU CANT EVEN INSTALL GAMES LOL, YOU CANT DUAL-BOOT, UBUNTU IS JUST LIKE MAC OS 2 LOL.

DONT COUNT THE FUCKING BROWSING, IT DEPENDS ON THE INTERNET SPEED NOOB. VISTA SUPPOSE TO WIN THAT FUCKING CRAPPY SHITTY UBUNTU

  • @markjaysongalang0699 hahahahhahaha....

  • this test is irrelevant it all depends on hardware .

  • its win7 first run, thats why it lost, mine starts in 20sec less

  • it's not true windows 7 not boots like vista

  • looooooooooool my win 7 starts in 38 sec xDDD

  • Wanna boot race? My ZX81 against any of your PC's. I'll even remove my extra memory and do it with 1K, yes - 1024 bytes. Just don't ask me to google anything on it though!

  • @lxPhilxl lol'd at 1024 bytes

  • @lxPhilxl nerd

  • 12 years i was on win (from 95 to win7). i tryed ubuntu last week, and i like it!

try it, ubuntu is cool and free.

try it even if you have modern computer as me - u will like ubuntu.

  • ubuntu 10.04 is going to be amazing

  • common sense for geeks =

if you use new software or an os on a old/slow computer it will be slower than the older version

thats why vista came before win7

ubuntu 9.10 didnt have the correct drivers causing screen glitches

  • waiting for ubuntu 10.04 XD

  • I have a Compaq computer with Windows XP installed and I installed Windows 7. It boots way faster then all 4 OS that mentioned in the video. My computer has 1GB of RAM , 200 GB of hard drive , and AMD CPU.

  • fake!! tempo medio di avvio 40s

  • Fake and Gay Windows 7 has sleep and resume no need booting all the time. Booting is communist!!!

  • i can't wait for ubuntu 10.04...

  • @Collps It's great ;-)

  • it already exsist!

  • @Collps I can't wait for Ubuntu 11.10.

  • i know: windows 7 is very slow

  • Wow does 7 really take longer to boot than Vista? I guess it makes up for it once everything is loaded.

I have a SSD so for me Windows 7 loads in 18 seconds, if I had Linux that would boot so fast!

maybe your pc is a shit for what you are loading so slowly ... me in 30 seconds to load ...

  • @INETX right, that\s what a mac-fanboy would say. Now, you see, Mac OS wasn't even in the tests. Explain that, douchebag!

  • i just mentioned i use snow leopard.

  • Thanks for the video! It isn't 100% accurate, because the boot time depends a lot on hardware and drivers / driver modules.

  • @LanHikari90 Sorry but this video is inaccuate due to the followings

    Hardware (They not same)

    Drivers (Yea they do matter)

    Browsers

My win7 loads within 38 seconds and it doesn't have that great hardware so u did some wierd shit there.

  • @DreamRaider1111 Yeah I said it isn't 100% accurate = inaccurate. :-P

  • @DreamRaider1111

    - Hardware is identical.

    - Do you think Ubuntu has an advantage in drivers or something? Totally not.

    - Windows comes with IE, Ubuntu comes with Firefox. Blaming the boottime on IE is righteous, because it sucks indeed. But it's part of Windows so it shows the speed of the OS too.

  • Ubuntu FTW

  • my ubuntu 9 takes 45seconds and my windows 7 30seconds.

both are 64bit, so it depends on the hardware but there has to be something seriously wrong with your HDD/ram/driver for windows to be so far behind on the same system.

  • I don't see that "same configuration" you talk about. Also every os taking so long, why? Mine initializes way faster than those 4 you shown.

Maybe you shouldn't run the 4 at once in virtual machines on the same computer, but make a true comparision in separate machines without running a screen recorder, for example.

Too much pseudoscience here =/. Did you configure the exact same services in each OS to be loaded at start? Are you running them in virtual environments? what hardware is that?

  • on your systems they´re all taking a bit long o.o

my win 7 boots a lot faster than yours xD

  • Windows 7 coming in absolute last leads me to believe -- SHENANIGANS!

  • @StrikeFear13 Windows 7 blows choir boys.

  • My my. I've been hanging out with the wrong operating systems then.

  • I give you FIVE stars, my friend!!!

  • Das boot!!! Watch my boot race, if you wanna see the real boot race!

  • something is wrong with this test, because Windiws 7 boots up faster than Windows Vista and this is well known fact !!!!

  • could have been a software update. i noticed ubuntus boot up has increased though too ever sense the new grub loader. ubuntu 10.04 coming out here soon will be even faster so dont worry, windows will be crushed again rofl. im not a big fan of linux but i do know if an os is good or not... some people are in denial cause they are stuck in one or to stupid to at least learn what else is out there. you can go free or pay 500 to get just a little bit of the same features.

  • umm what are your specs? My vista takes about 4 minutes to boot

  • how does canonical make money from linux ubuntu. the os is so advanced yet free.

  • you have big companies using it, which they can charge for tech support. or another thing is donations. they dont need to pay tons of crap like the other oses out there so they just need a tiny bit, its built by the community also, but dont get that confused with open source, you still need to apply for it. freebsd is true open source and my even out do unix like unix did ms dos. os x was built off c++ but switched to full unix in 10.5, makes you wonder if freebsd will too sense they shadow os x

  • Merchandise, advertising, sponsors, and donations. That's about it.

But that's the beauty of Ubuntu.

  • My Windows 7 only takes 28 seconds.Watch my video.

  • How come my case is not the same as u.

Window 7 boot speed must faster than Ubuntu 9.10!!! (Win 7 at least 10-15s faster!)

  • quite an unorthodox observation. Windows 7 got the last place

  • @techrequesthax They actually tested these on real system instead of using vm it says on their site :)

  • I like my 17 second Fedora boot speed better :D

  • yea i know windows 7 owns those lol

    i use ubuntu 9.04 though

  • This is impossible WIndows 7 Is much faster

  • wahat??? i use 756MB of Ram and i have an 128MB of video graphic, 2.8GHz, and i use Windows 7 (7600)but faster then your....

  • i prefer the OpenSuSE 11.2 bootspeed :D

  • gnu/linux win 8-))

  • Ubuntu FTW!

  • LONG LIFE TO GNU/LINUX!!!!

  • my windows vista boots 4.30 and i have doble processor and 4 giga ram

im changin to xp prefessional sp3

  • why downrate this guy? are you retarded or what?

My Ubuntu loads in 15 src, Win Vista - 30 sec.

  • Did you calculated the fragmentation of the boot volumes? If not, then make the calculations and come back later...

With my hardware, and of course after defragmenting the boot volume (with name order..) :

Ubuntu 9.10 still stays with 40 secs but win7 decreases boot time to 40-43 secs ;) Ubuntu 9.04 makes 46-48 secs and vista becomes worst of all with ~55secs...

Sequential reading from the hard drive is one of the most effective thing to boot the computer up...

  • Guldaria:

a stupid linuxer?... A STUPID LINUXER?!?!?!? HOW DARE YOU!!!!!!! EVERY PERSON IN THE WORLD OWES THEIR LIFE TO EITHER PAUL HUDSON, MIKE SAUNDERS OR ANDREW GREGORY!!!! or err that umm other guy who err is a umm kde user *cough FAIL*. Yes, im talking to you Graham Morrison.

On a nicer note..... Awesome vid guys, just shows how much Linux and open source in general, kicks ass! :)

  • in my note win7 takes 20 sec

  • try google chrome next time .you will be shocked

  • not fair...

linux and win was started and prepareted for anything, applications, games, etc.

if the boot time to a windows only for 1 browser, the boot timeup will be a 0,001 sec

  • I belive that. My Ubuntu 9.10 is in 30s ready for go. WOW! It's a wonderful OS. It's so pretty, fast, without problems, no Viruses ...

  • This is not true!!!!

Ubuntu 9.10 is the fastest OS!!!!

    My loads just for 30 - 35 s.

  • MY experience is completely different to say the least, I can only speak for windows now, but with vista its took 2:45 and with 7 its only 1:05 and thats from turning it on to a working browser, now granted I was running alot of start up files in vista while my 7 is relatively clean(a newer faster starting version of Firefox too)

Firefox is naively faster on linux based systems anyway, so there is a bit of a tilt in that direction from the start. What version of Firefox is it?

  • lolol

with windows vista my pc had nearly 3 mins to boot. now with windows 7 its 1.30!!!

  • Rofl, why?

  • HA! In your face stupid peace Microsoft Shit! Linux always wins, no matter what!

  • Comment removed

  • Because it's free, then it's NOT in Stores, and then there is not really anyone who knows it.

  • Like you know what you're talking :D

  • Ehh, probably not.

  • Comment removed

  • This isn't truth ...I am sure about it.....

  • -_____________0

My windows 7 only needs 55s xD

  • I think you are really fucked up, if you think that a system is better than other for only 40 fucking seconds of boot

  • @Marcraft22 only?! are you kiddink?!

  • Your system is shit ,vista is laike horror dreams, ubuntu 9.10 is good ,and windows 7 is the best :) i loveit

  • allot has to do with your hardware and bios, I only reboot windows 7 about once a month, and with my SSD it takes about 20 seconds

  • Ubuntu Rules !!

  • my mac boots in 25 seconds

  • Yeah, and the hardware is inferior, the SO is OK, but youy had to pay an extra grand just to get that "elegant" look lol to hell with Mac, they steal your money lol

  • ubuntu ftw

  • is richtig mein win7 is mindestens 2 schneller.....

  • windows 7 boots a lot faster than ubuntu after the system has been hibernated

  • what are you stupid?

  • nah,

hibernate your windows 7 system. and then boot it again

win 7 boots so fast after hibernation

  • That doesn't call boot.

  • n3wb

  • OMG, if you HIBERNATE, then you aren't BOOTING a system... Otherwise it would've been a Hibernation speed test. It has nothing to do with booting...

  • Thank you for timing these on the shittiest computer you could find in a dumpster.

    Real accurate.

  • Why you didn't put the OSX in the race? It should be cool know more about it

  • come on who gives a shit on the booting times. there a more important things to do than improve the Booting Time e.g better support for Hardware (blobs are sucking as hell), better integration of the console and much more but not goddamn booting times.

  • I agree completely, they all have sub 1.5 min. boot times, and the 30-20 s difference won't make me switch my OS.

  • Windows 7 has a quite slow boot for the first 3-4 times you start it after the installation. I guess this is because it hasn't cached most of the stuff it must load yet. After that, it's even faster than XP, and, what is more, it's already responsive when it's still loading stuff. Try it to believe it.

  • great job for manipulating win 7, i have never seen it start that slowly, but i guess this is what we should get from linux fanboi?

  • Impossible, vista more fast of 7?

    Bah!

Certainly you have installed a strange version or this is a error...

I had Vista on the same computer 7 beats, is twice as fast!

  • Vista with sp2 is really good -- my laptop never had issues. But I have to agree with the video that when it comes to full utilization of the 64 bit, ubuntu will beat both vista and win 7 ---- even on a live ubuntu cd -- it's crispy.

  • In case there is misunderstanding, I do not mean Ubuntu will beat Win 7 running on a LIVE CD - that's not possible. Just that it works good (even on a live cd) when you use a 2.2 Ghz dual core, 4gb ram, a good card like 7600 Gforce Nvidia graphic card on a 64-bit "entertainment" class notebook running a 64-bit os.

  • LOL

win7 32bits in my Celeron D start faster than this

  • As a sole test it's not that interesting when there's no great differences. More interesting would be if you have some large 3d game that took a while to load and whether you were able to put the system on standby while running that game and resume it without issues later. And also quit the game, then re-run it later to see how the OS utilizes available memory to cache it. There are some very large differences in how Vista and Windows 7 caches apps and in some cases Vista is faster than 7.

  • Nice to see a *real* boot test. Most of them only show the boot until login, but a test is only relevant if you measure how long time it takes until the main app (i.e. web browser) is up and running, just like this test!

Unfortunately, I recently overdosed on command line stuff and forum members who insist on telling me *what* to do instead of *how* to do it, so I won't use Linux again in the near future.

  • Oh yeah, gonna die for 20s more, I'm gonna go switch to Ubuntu right now!! thats for this great video!

  • u need to install flash 64bit if u picked 64bit version! otherwise u will be stuck with problems

  • no one is trying to switch to ubuntu, what are you talking about? this is just a boot comparison of the most popular operating systems excluding leopard.

  • It would be nice to the truth but not My job is INSTALLATIONS OS and this is completely ADVERTISEMENT

Much work remains to ubuntu can be measured with Win 7

  • Ubuntu 9.10 won! Just as I expected. Koala threw rocks at Gates Windows

  • The PCs had same hw... They were turned on at the same time. Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala, my compliments! ;-)
