tbh what do these benchmarks actually tell us, that one card performs better than the other one, so if you get wood off these useless tests your in for allot of money always byuing the next best card. Face it if you want a machine like this you have to spend well over 4000 pounds to get it so yeh it looks awesome I couldn't really be arsed over 20FPS less when it's at 295FPS and the prices for these cards are unreal anyway.

so i've been trying to figure out what the difference between fixed framerate and variable framerate is. Anyone care to explain?

Fixed literally forces the game to stick at a certain frame rate. Obviously this setup would EASILY cope with max settings at 60fps (the recognised "constant" gameplay target.

Variable means that it will just let the card and system give out the *actual* potential power of the cards, even though you may not be able to notice the difference visually at the much higher frame rates (youre not going to see any visual change between maybe 120-350fps this pumps out.

Just better for benchmarking ^^

actually, I noticed it does that for the game itself, not the benchmark, so I THINK in RE5's case, it changes it to the crysis kind of setup where "the first one to finish wins" playing a set of frames, where as fixed means they both finish at the same time, just measures the power in the same loop. My bad :P

I think what you may be talking about is vsync. Im familiar with what vsync does.

I have Devil may cry 4 and it also has 60 FPS MAX or variable framerate settings. I can go over 60 FPS with the fixed (60 FPS MAX) setting on, so i'm just confused as to what it does.

Thats cause a typical LCD screen is only capable of changing itself 60 times a second.

Any more than 60 fps and they arent represented.

Under the framerate setting, there is 60 FPS MAX or Variable. This is independent of vsync. I can have vsync off and choose 60 FPS MAX and still go over 100 frames per second. i appear to get better performance with the Variable option, so I'm just wondering what this 60 FPS MAX option actually does. I've googled it and no one seems to actually know.

Vsync means Vertical Synchronization, it synchronizes the games framerate to your monitor.

I believe by max and variable it is talking about the max allowed frame rate in the game, 60 FPS you want to be the max framerate or the game will play at a higher speed than was designed, as if it were in fast forward.

dual-gpu cards are always downclocked due to power consumption and heat issues. also, the bandwidth gets split in half for each gpu w/memory. if you find the card with the same gpu, (5870), the sky is the limit

But if youre going to spend all that money why not spend a little more and get the best? And shouldnt you be able to get more percentage of your money back from selling the four 5870s individually than selling two 5970s individually,right? Ether way I would go for 5870s since you could start with 1, upgrade to 2, upgrade to 3 and finish off with a fourth gpu. The price drops between the upgrades might make the 5870 option cheaper than the 5970s. : )

Yes, there's many ways to look at it.

Me personally I wouldn't go for either of the two options.

I much rather go for a single card solution due to my passed experiences with scaling, heat and noise issues with multi-gpu setups.

A single HD 5870 is fine for me, next will be a GTX 380 (Fermi GF100).

It would be interesting to see how the results will be if the 5970s are clocked to the same clocks as the 5870. The Stream processor count and all the other specs are exactly the same between the cards. Then it would me up to drivers and how they scale in crossfire.

The 4 cards have their own memory each, the 5970 has 2 GPU's sharing the 2GB's.

Actually no, a 5850 have 1440 Stream Processors and 5870 has 1600.

The 5970 have 1600 x2, so it's a 5870 gpu with lower clock speeds.

Stream Precossor Count:

5970 - 3200 (1600 x2)

5870 - 1600 

5850 - 1440
