Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU, for this video. I have watched several others and searched several websites, and this is the first that doesn't leave me completely confused. Length contraction makes sense now.
I have a related question. In special relativity, when the length of an object decreases the mass increases proportionally. Does this mean that mass equals 1/Length ? Does this imply the possible conversion of hyperdimensional space to mass and vice-versa?
@wavyinfinity Relative to the car, itself, no contraction would occur. The contraction is only visible to an immobile bystander. (The car would also need to be traveling close to the speed of light)
To continue, consider a beam of light from a star several LY`s away. We think it took several years to get to us, but the light thinks it got here instantaneously due to time dilation in the moving frame. This must mean that velocity as observed by the light beam was infinite. The relative speed observed by us was, of course, only "c". Length contraction is merely a relative illusion, but the time dilation is REAL & proven. Read "TIME DILATION The Reality". There`s much more than this in there.
If time dilation is REAL, we must define reality. Reality is only an appropriate idea within the frame under consideration. Therefore, the time dilation, being real in the moving frame will affect the VELOCITY in the moving frame, NOT the lengths. This gives the same predictions in science as length contraction but gives infinite speed in the moving frame coincident with the relative speed of "c". What better way to understand WHY "c" is the limit of relative speed.
There is still a contradiction here. Whilst space-time diagrams do explain these things clearly, the notion that red shift is observed from either frame is challanged by the proven relative time dilation of ONE frame relative to the other (eg 1971, Hafele & Keating). If time dilation were purely relative, then the clocks would end up the same time when re-entering the stationary frame, and they are not. Deduction, relative time dilation is also REAL !

@SuperMagnetizer Really? If I was on Earth and it would take me 7 years to reach Sirius if I travel at 99% the speed of light, but when I actually go on the ship, the trip only took 1 year. What happened? How come it took much shorter than I expected. Time isn't dilating on my reference frame, everything is as usual. That, my friend, proves the reality of Lorentz contraction. The distance between me and Sirius and been cut to 1/7th the original distance. In other words, space contracted by 7x
@GunsNRosesbitches Say you're in a 1-mile long spacecraft speeding at 0.99c toward some star 7 LY away (Sirius is actually 8.65 LY). Both the near and far ends of the spacecraft will appear 7 times closer and therefore appear to be 1/7 mile apart as "length contraction." This distortion however also distorts the speed. You get there in one year because your true speed is almost 7c.
@SuperMagnetizer The distortion does not distort the speed. There's no such thing as a "true" speed, it's all relative. The very fact that length is contracted along the direction of the motion is why you get there so quick, not cause you are traveling @ "7c". One way to look at it is by thinking of the axis perpendicular to the motion. It has not contracted and it moves away from you at .99c, yet because the x axis is contracted, the distances shorten. That's the reason you get there in 1 year.
I see what you are saying. You are saying basically because of length contraction factor of 7, the "true" speed of the spacecraft is 7c since it travels the same distance in 1/7th the amount of time. But that's not how I interpret it. I see length contraction as a real physical effect & observation. Your spacecraft will still measure its speed as 0.99c, but the contraction makes the trip 1 year.
This is great but could you say where you got this from? I would love to watch the full vid

slows time and contracts distances? Holy sh!t. Just imagine if a car could do that.

Don't worry, friend. Despite what physicists might say, the length contractions and time dilations are not real, just observational effects.
