"At the end of "By The Pain I See In Others", the final note fades slowly and ends at 10:38. If the volume is maximized during the fading note, it gives the listener a sense of rain fall and a person in search of something. @socobitches hahaha i have actually heard that. i find it kind of hard to believe though. and if it is true that really really sucks because religious music basically consists of three repeated major chords through the song. and if were really lucky they'll through in a damn 9 chord and think they're brilliant
@Akhin One of my favorite songs by mozart. I've listened to it several times. that really really sucks because religious music basically consists of three repeated major chords through the song. Okay I said it again. what now? I clearly wasn't referring to religious music written 220 years ago saying as I'm making a comparison between religious music and Opeth. comparing mozart to Opeth is just retarded. Go away.
Haha I didn't compare Mozart to Opeth in any way, I was just pointing out that religious music can be great, like Mozart's masses, Hindu music or Arvo Pärt's compositions if you want something more contemporary. I'm an atheist, but I still can see it's stupid to deny that music CAN have a religious connotation and still be awesome music.
@Akhin yeah I agree with all of that. religious music can be great. keep in mind this conversation started over 3 months ago and I change every week so you're hardly even talking with the same person who wrote "religious music basically consists of three repeated major chords through the song"
@80smetalchild i think its because a lot of them think they're eeeevvviiillll. haha. like theyll put 666 in they're name which is stupid wether you're religious or not. it's just immature. and besides that i don't think music should be associated with religion. their really opinionated for the most part too. just read through the comments bellow this and you'll probably see what i mean. maybe not.
well as far as the devil bullshit thing goes, i think thats more of a death metal vibe all together it could also be that the frontman mikael arkfelt makesalot of "evil" references, but all in good joking. but maybe thats where the fans pick that up.i thought the reason people my hate opeth fans is because alot of us tend to think "opeth is the best, nothing else compares".but personally i can relate to people like that, there is something dangerously addicting about their music
@80smetalchild haha, yea i agree that nothing else really compares. opeth has the most songs out of any band i can find that has the dark vibe i look for. the only time i find that quality in a song with another band they only have one or two songs like it. actually i usually only find it in classical music. the moonlight sonata is beast.
hahaha we are playing moonlight sonata right now in the orchestra im in. all the kids are lik "this song is boring!!!!" i dont know man, i love that song too. very dark and somber
I can see why this is Mikael's least favorite track(if I remember reading correctly). The riffs are chord progression and very simple compared to a typical opeth song. The intro riff almost sounded like the Halo theme lol
I'm still sort of "iffy" about this song. The into, and the kickoff are both great, but it loses it's power once that riff starts at 50 seconds in. After that, it starts a slow climb back to where the kickoff stood, but...that riff is a real turnoff. Other than that, it's still a good song, but.......haha, that damn riff!
@Seek1Destroy1 Hell yeah. When I hear this song, it makes me wish Lopez could come back. Axe is good, don't get me wrong. But Lopez had that "it" factor that set them apart from other bands. I mean, to this day, it blows my mind how Lopez could play anything. He could plow through brutal songs like "Master's Apprentices" and "Wreath" on Deliverance. Then he'd do a 180 and play eloquent and graceful songs like "In My Time of Need" and "Windowpane" on Damnation. Amazing.
Slipknot is amazing, although this is not the time and place for that. amazing song, Love the intro, wish they would have kept the type of riffs or whatever they did for that into the later parts of the song.
@thychaos: Yes, you're right, American band made more classic album...I love a lot of american bands...Tool, Alica in Chains, Nirvana, Soundgarden, NIN, I wanna say that european bands have a great standard in quality, originality..that's all :-)

@Hagstrom4ever well america does have morbid angel, autopsy, suffocation, atheist, immolation, obituary, deicide, death, incantation, etc. so, i think its safe to say that bands that came from america made more classic albums than swedish death metal bands did.
Why does everyone say that this is their worst song? I love it personally. It's dark for them, sure, but the end bit that that this chopped out, (the rain, person walking around, not the backward verses), is so haunting...
@thedudeiscj You didnt reply to me directly (at least I didnt receive your comment on my email) but I came here to listen this song again and found your reply. I was obviously being sarcastic about calling Mikael an asshole, but it really annoys me that he has said this is their worst song because I really like it :p
this song for me, is opeth experimenting with their techniques a lot, and whilst it may not be as good as some of their other songs,it certainly still is a good effort to be honest-opeth fucking rule\m/
@thedudeiscj lol, yeah. Personally what I think makes it their "worst" song is that it doesn't flow quite as well as they are known for. Theres parts of this song I absolutely love, they build up into big emotional licks and what not. HOWEVER, in the second half of the song it kind of feels like it doesn't flow quite as well, in fact is feels like there's certain times where it should be ending but they keep going. They did record this album under band circumstances though.
nobody has respect for good music now adays. the song is brilliant.fuck everything opeth ever did was brilliant. those guys that wrote those stupid fuckin comments are morons, they probably like st.anger or someother stupid ass shitty music, if you have nothing good to say then shut the fuck up cause nobody cares what you think, opeth is pure and as genuine as music can get in these modern pathetic times.

Opeth has some really good music, but in my opinion as a musician, their biggest weakness is their tendency to repeat riffs/ideas many times with very little variance.
@MERTx123 I have to agree with you on this one... they repeat riffs too much. I'd like them even more if they didn't.
However, that doesn't really happen in this song, but more in Master's Apprentices and Wreath, the intros are pretty much the same melody over and over again.

@tunglour I feel the amount of repeats they use in their songs fit perfectly. The point of repetition is to bring your attention to and focus on whats being played. Some people believe, on a first listen, that opeth repeats riffs way too much, but people like me think that Opeth is self aware of how amazing they are and that you can repeat their riff like 12 times and still be jamming hard without boredom. I love the song wreath because its chaotic and beautiful in a heavy droney way.
@mobman47 Couldn't have said it better myself. They do repeat their riffs a lot, but I definitely find myself sad when its over lol. It's entrancing in a wierd kind of way. That shit's so good that if it only did it like twice it'd be a waste of genious!
hahah dude ur so right. when i first got into opeth, i was like ok, is this riff ever gonna end, this is boring, etc. now literally find myself wanting to listento a 5 minute loop of just that one riff.
Which ancient people would have been the metal people? That's right, the fucking Vikings! No wonder Swedish metal bands kick ass. Meshuggah's my favorite.
Wich fuckin retard said that Sweden Metal sucks. If its about Metal, Sweden have the best Metal to offer world wide:
Opeth, old In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, At The Gates, Meshuggah, Arch Enemy,
old Soilwork, Nightrage,... Nothing more to say. And if someone think this music sucks, have definitly no taste in music and just knows bands like Metallica, Slipknot and Disturbed and think he is a big Metalhead. Stupid kiddies.
@askorbiinihappo yes indeed, anyway mainly european metal surpasses the american one making reference to the newer bands.I personally consider german and swedish metal on the top\m/

Hey, I love Slipknot, and I like Opeth a lot, too! If I had to choose, I'd choose slipknot, though (I know this will get rated down here). Opeth may be more technical, but I feel that slipknot displays better songwriting and has more energy.
Slipknot have some well written tracks (Gematria) but Opeth's songwriting style sounds amazing, the only way I can describe it is that Opeth just sound HUGE (I don't mean popular, it's as if their music literally has more mass), can't explain at all, but it has to do with the well placed repetition.
Most likely there darkest song and the one that best defines the album. I like comparing Bloodbath and Opeth because both are about evils. Bloodbath being about supernatural evil (satan demons destruction of mankind etc) whereas Opeth seems to focus on more evils of the brain. This song really pinpoints my theory on that along with the other songs. Besides on some of their earlier song most people believe that some of songs are from the points of a murderer (like say The Leper Affinity).
Though I do see Opeth as a better band than Bloodbath, as it would be quite the difficult task to focus on the darkness of the brain, particularly in creating music that somewhat stimulates the darkness in the minds of the audience, which is why Opeth is so great. They can't be described, defined or categorized. It's just sitting in silence, experiencing brilliance.
@yuppiroad ..........ive gone hours listening to their stuff with out saying a word......even moving sometimes......sheer brilliance......they have captured an eloquence so beautiful one cannot describe.....
apparently this is opeth singer mikael akerfeldt's least favourite song-now me and any other opeth fan would think otherwise, but to be fair,he is probably the brains of the band itself.mind you, deliverance is a magnificent fucking masterpiece, and so are opeth \m/
i know, an im puzzled as well, but like i said,he is probably the brains of the band, so its not going to be as if he hates his own creations.i still love themXD
I gotta agree, watershed didnt quite cut it for me. great album, but not unbelieveable. Its kinda hard to follow up ghost reveries, i mean that was a master piece. I can see where watershed was going, but it lost that edge where it seems like metal that has been made like in the 1600s. that ancient feel mixing with the modern
Watershed to me was a good album. Its just that at the same time i feel like the album was "died down" you could say, by songs like porcelain heart and hex omega. I think theyre good but to me theyre just ok songs, as compared to the epicness of most of their other songs, i think thats why a bunch of people dislike watershed.
to be fair, opeth are one of those bands that could be known as unpredictable-you just never know what they will do with the next album. what people have to realise is that, despite what fans want to hear, bands must move on in order to stay fresh and exciting, and not play the same old music over and over again. which is the reason why opeth are magnificent.
Exactly, although I said I didnt like some of the Watershed songs, Opeth did progress forward, and Hex Omega even started to grow on me. But I completely agree with that.

Hey, I love Slipknot, and I like Opeth a lot, too! If I had to choose, I'd choose slipknot, though (I know this will get rated down here). Opeth may be more technical, but I feel that slipknot displays better songwriting and has more energy.
MERTx123 2 years ago
I totally disagre on the but ii mean we all have our opinions right?
EternalRAGEclan 2 years ago
Slipknot have some well written tracks (Gematria) but Opeth's songwriting style sounds amazing, the only way I can describe it is that Opeth just sound HUGE (I don't mean popular, it's as if their music literally has more mass), can't explain at all, but it has to do with the well placed repetition.

Opeth, Soilwork, and Mesuggah all the way!

I have to say, in my opinion Deliverence is Opeth's number one album by far. Only Orchid comes close to it's supremacy.
Lazuotut 2 years ago
Eh lemme rephrase that the evils of mankind but regardless we can all agree Opeth is an absolutely amazing band and flawless at blowing our minds.
great20 2 years ago 2
Most likely there darkest song and the one that best defines the album. I like comparing Bloodbath and Opeth because both are about evils. Bloodbath being about supernatural evil (satan demons destruction of mankind etc) whereas Opeth seems to focus on more evils of the brain. This song really pinpoints my theory on that along with the other songs. Besides on some of their earlier song most people believe that some of songs are from the points of a murderer (like say The Leper Affinity).
great20 2 years ago 3
Though I do see Opeth as a better band than Bloodbath, as it would be quite the difficult task to focus on the darkness of the brain, particularly in creating music that somewhat stimulates the darkness in the minds of the audience, which is why Opeth is so great. They can't be described, defined or categorized. It's just sitting in silence, experiencing brilliance.

@yuppiroad ..........ive gone hours listening to their stuff with out saying a word......even moving sometimes......sheer brilliance......they have captured an eloquence so beautiful one cannot describe.....

musicians can just hate their work sometimes... i really question why with this song... its so beautiful
VoidofMorning 2 years ago 5
apparently this is opeth singer mikael akerfeldt's least favourite song-now me and any other opeth fan would think otherwise, but to be fair,he is probably the brains of the band itself.mind you, deliverance is a magnificent fucking masterpiece, and so are opeth \m/
musicalkaratekid 2 years ago 5
why does mikael not like this song?
opeth1254 2 years ago
i know, an im puzzled as well, but like i said,he is probably the brains of the band, so its not going to be as if he hates his own creations.i still love themXD

I gotta agree, watershed didnt quite cut it for me. great album, but not unbelieveable. Its kinda hard to follow up ghost reveries, i mean that was a master piece. I can see where watershed was going, but it lost that edge where it seems like metal that has been made like in the 1600s. that ancient feel mixing with the modern
boofaloof111 2 years ago
Watershed to me was a good album. Its just that at the same time i feel like the album was "died down" you could say, by songs like porcelain heart and hex omega. I think theyre good but to me theyre just ok songs, as compared to the epicness of most of their other songs, i think thats why a bunch of people dislike watershed.
nivramrelyt 2 years ago
to be fair, opeth are one of those bands that could be known as unpredictable-you just never know what they will do with the next album. what people have to realise is that, despite what fans want to hear, bands must move on in order to stay fresh and exciting, and not play the same old music over and over again. which is the reason why opeth are magnificent.
musicalkaratekid 2 years ago 5
Exactly, although I said I didnt like some of the Watershed songs, Opeth did progress forward, and Hex Omega even started to grow on me. But I completely agree with that.
nivramrelyt 2 years ago
yeah:)and still, press worldwide did love the album(a few 10/10 ratings spread across the international media to be fair)
