@keliata Captive animals are happy if taken care of properly. Take Knut for example, he got all he wanted to eat, never did he have a shortage of food like he might have in the wild. He had a big place to run around in and somewhere to sleep that wasn't exposed to harsh weather. And he had other polar bears to play with. Girl polar bears too~ I'm sure he was a very happy bear who loved all the attention and love he got.

I suppose you are one of those people who, when done with your dog you just let him go somewhere out in the wild. He was lovingly raised not abused. Although anthropomorphization is always suspect, I can say that if I was a polar bear, I'd prefer his life to one in the wild, as nature can be amazingly cruel. Also, polar bears in zoos are an ambassadors of their species....they serve to make people care about the plight of polar bears and their vanishing habitat.
