My fiancé and I are expecting our first child and he has started the process of going into the Navy. Is it more beneficial to get married before he is enlisted? And even though our child is still unborn will he still be consider my fiancés dependent?
I hope these questions don't seem dumb or anything. Thanks Irene :)
@lilbronxgirl2002 No. It doesn't matter really. The Navy will cover your medical expenses only if you're married so when you get married versus when he enlists is up to you. The Navy should still cover your child's expenses as long as his name is on the birth certificate but keep in mind that any expenses to HAVE the child will not be covered by Tricare (the Navy's medical insurance) unless you are married.
My husband spent all his enlisted Navy career with the Marines& was in Iraq a yr as a combat RP. So I guess I know the Marines way of life more than the Navy, LOL. But now, He's graduated from OCS & is a Surface Warship Officer, so he's stuck on a ship & I live somewhere else til the big deployment ends. I didn't really get treated well by officers wives , soooo I kinda wish I had the opportunity to live more of the Navy life before I became an Officer's wife. I still feel out of place a bit :)
Did having a military family make you want a military spouse?
When your husband is away, are there still "little fights"? (i.e. forgetting to pay a bill, disagreements in budget, questioning where the other one is when you can't get a hold of them?)
How often do you talk to him, and what is your main form of communication when he is away? Do you use snail mail ever?
My bf is in the army. We started talking while he was in Iraq. Now we live together. He said that there's a chance he would have to deploy to Afghanistan. I'm really not looking forward to that since we're practically together everyday(other than drill weekends and such of course). I'm not sure what to ask, but I'm sure your video will help me. :) Thanks Irene!
I was just wondering in your opinion is it better to get married before or after he enlists? It's not a question of if we're gonna get married, we are regardless, I'm just curious about the timing...if one is better than the other. Thank you:)
I am a Navy wife as well...so I don't really have any questions for you, since I know what being a Navy wife is like, but I am glad that you will be doing this video!
So happy you're back on this channel. It's a fun way to get to know you. I'm a Navy mom so I have some idea. But I think it's MUCH harder to be a Navy wife. You do it with grace,Irene. xo Ter
I don't have any specific questions but this seems like a great topic and I am very interested in watching the video/series. I have no military info so it would be cool so see how you communicate when he's away and what you do to make it easier when he is gone.
you are God sent to me Irene! :) so glad you made a video like this... My husband is also in the Navy and he is a Corpsman (HM). He is currently attached to a guided missile cruiser and they go underway every month in preparation for their deployment next year. (That will be his very first deployment since he joined in)
-what are the things you do so you can set aside the worries/feelings since he's gone?
I don't have any questions specifically, but I'd just like to say thank you for filming this.I don't have experience with any of this, but I just think that navy/military spouses are so so strong. It may not seem a big deal to you, but I think the bravery and strength from spouses is incredible.
YAY this was my request, I'm glad others are interested too! I'm wondering about having to move around alot and how do you plan on handling that when you have children? How is it to keep changing schools and stuff like that. Everyone else has covered some great questions! I cant wait to see this vid Irene!
How do you keep in contact when he's away? Is communication possible? It just must be so hard, I couldn't imagine being away from my partner. (though I'm single)
- How many times have you moved, and do you have any advice on how to make the move as smooth as possible? My first PCS is awaiting me early next year!
- How would you feel about moving OCONUS?
- What are your opinions on living on post versus off post?
- How in touch are you with the other spouses? (FRG or what the Navy equivalent is)
- Do you feel it's different since you don't have kids yet? (Since to me it seems everyone has kids!)
- What's Brett's job exactly if you can/want to share?
Thanks so much for doing this video! I feel like I sort of know you from youtube (weird huh?) and although I know everyone goes through tough times being a military wife (or longterm girlfriend) when you don't know anyone else it does feel a little isolating. Do you have other navy wife friends who support you? Again, thanks for making the effort to do this, I can tell you now I for one will really appriciate it, he's just left for a short deployment (2 months) on v. short notice! Thanks again x
How long does Brett go on Deployments for and what do you do to keep yourself occupied and from missing him so much?
Whats your favourite thing about being a navy wife?
Has he ever gone on a deployment and left you on very short notice? If so, how did you deal with it?
How often do you get to see him when he's not deployed? (I'm from the UK and I don't live with him where he's based so if he's not deployed we get weekends and that's it)
Have you got any tips for getting through tough times?
I think I'm most curious about what you do when your husband is deployed. Is it boring being by yourself in the house? Do you have many activities that occupy your time?
My hubby is in the Coast Guard and it is very interesting to be a Military Wife. He just got back from his first deployment to Africa for 4 months...very interesting. I love the military life. My hubby and I seemed to have sailed through the deployment and him returning home. It seemed very easy for me. How were/are deployments for you?
I assume that Navy spouses face a higher percentage of separations than other branches. I was a fortunate Air Force Spouse (retired now) with very few separations, partly due to my husband being a Dentist. There were twenty moves however, worth it for the travel opportunities we enjoyed since there were four overseas assignments that I got to share.
@AbbieJolie My husband is a military pilot - and I bet aviation have the highest rate of separation... it's his job to go away and when he's home (he's currently deployed) he does it daily and often gone for days or weeks or more! I have some friends who are military MD's and a friend who's a dentist and I had wondered if that would be like a 9-5 job and why, why, why couldn't my husband just do that! *grin*
What do you do when you miss your husband? How often do you get to meet him or call him? Irene- I absolutely love your videos and you are so gorgeous!
how do you and your husband stay close as a married couple when you are apart for long stretches of time? also how do you cope with the worry that he may be somewhere dangerous?

Have you found good online support groups for military wives? I'm newly wed to an army guy, and only found one place so far.
