A good portion on the gay marriage movement is also related to the 'rights' of a gay couple vs. a non-gay couple. Child custody, Non-Marital assets such as pensions and property rights in the event of the death of one of the gay couple or separation of both, taxes as well.
So the issues here are deeper than just the 'Status'; Its the rights and privileges of that; Marriage.
But in out haste for equality, we should not overlook the repercussions of haste. We need to address all concerns.

The US may spend less in taxes, but we sure make up for it in health care and education costs. In France when you go to college you don't have to spend the next ten or twenty years of your life paying for it, while interest amounts. Nor in France do you have to worry about being covered by for-profit HMOs, who may decide that your treatment isn't necessary, if you are so lucky to obtain health insurance in the first place.
