@stoudbaker There are two Area 88 anime. The one you're thinking of (with computer graphic jets etc) is the TV version that came out a few years ago. This is from the Area 88 OVA which came out in the 80s. You might be able to find episodes on youtube.
There are more planes in the OVA and the TV series has several (F.1 Mirage and J-35F) that only appear once or twice. Yeah they do appear more than that if you count the cg cuts that they reuse more than once because the animators were lazy. Shinjou was basically an attempt to merge Invulnerable Charlie and the escapee killers into one character. Pretty lazy if I do say so myself. The TV was for kids, less violent, little swearing but the OVA was brutal and more true to the saying war is hell.
Better character development in the tv series!?! Are you serious??? There is no mention of Tracy in the TV series. Miss Yasada is never mentioned once but she is present in the 2005 version. Where is bucksey? Where are the escapee killers? Why do Kim or Kitri exist? Yeah Boris is a little more developed but that's pretty much the only character from the TV series that has more depth than the characters from the OVA.
@Iffy350 - Lack of a particular character does not mean the development was lacking. There were also newer characters in the TV series. Kitori and Kim were both brand new characters. And Kim was given a sort of episode about him/her (?), as well as Mickey. Also, Shinjou (the photographer) is given more character, maybe because he lived in the TV series. My emotional reasoning is, I feel more attached to the TV characters than the OVA ones. Shin was a far more central character in the OVA.
@Iffy350 - you're also talking about 2 1/2 hours (OVA) vs 5 hours (TV) of film time. There's more just simply more time and room for character development.
@neoritter: 4.5 Hour tv series, there are no epic battles in the TV series and regardless of what you believe the character of mickey is barely even scratched in the tv series. Also the CG in the tv series is really bad. Check out Macross Zero F-14 versus MiG-29. The first four episodes of the tv series were 'cut' poorly having drop tanks disappear reappear at random. Kim is the most annoying character in the TV series and Kitri doesn't even really need to be in this series.
@Iffy350@Iffy350 - seriously... get your panties out of twist... Everything else you're saying is moot here. I've already said I like the OVA better. Whether the CG was good or not again does not affect whether the character development was good. Whether, Kim was annoying, or Katri was unneccesary does not affect that either.
BTW - If you're going to be anal...12 episodes X 26 mins length = 5.2 hours...
@AstroChickenII - I can definitely agree that the OVA is better, but I do feel the new has a little bit more character development for the supporting characters.
I haven't seen the OVA but was wondering what people's opinions were on the graphics and character development?
Many thanks.
