I know about 5 words in German, and none in Dutch, but I have plenty of German cousins, and Dutch sounds like a combination of German and French to me. I hear some Romance language in there for sure. Correct me if that's completely off base tho. I'm curious about its origins

Dutch is a germanic language and has no Romance inflictions in its "stripped down" version-so to speak. But, throughout the centuries; a lot of english and french "loanwords" have been incorporated. In terms of it's origins. you could say that the Dutch language is the perfect example of Anglo Saxon speak. english apparently finds its origins in the Frysian language, spoken in the very north of the Netherlands. i hope this answers your question! To conclude(I'm on a roll,bite me:p)Dutch and German are about as similar to eachother as Spanish and Italian.They sound similar but, are completely different languages.Most Germans find it hard to understand dutch-we like to string words together and make "guttural" G-sounds.To confuse you even more;the word "Germany"translates to:"Deutschland"in german("Duitsland"-in dutch).

No wonder the rest of the world gets confused-we speak "Dutch("Nederlands") which is VERY different from German(Deutsch)

But that has nothing to do with the language. I also understand German but the language has a totally different sound. I do admit there are similarities in words but how you pronounce is different. You can tell the words come from the same old language of the german tribes but I bet everyone who shows a little bit of interest in the subject can tell whether there is spoken German or not (often people dont know about the dutch language so that is why they call it german).
