This is a prestigious vehicle. Those whom have bad things to say about this vehicle, does not know what they are talking about. I have the 500 SE and have been driving it for 14 years and will never get rid of it, My other vehicles will give me problems, but this car at the first turn of the ignition it comes to life like only and Mercedes V8 can,
The european version 420/560SEL (in this video) looks 100 times better than the 420/560SEL models you see here in the united states. Not to mention faster
Nice car! And with very rare Hydropneumatic Suspension (HPF)!! But it looks like the HPF was broken since the car was riding so low and won't lift up?
I got one 560SEL with HPF but it was broken too. I had to sell it away coz' the Mercedes Benz Factory in German responded me that those HPF parts are no longer available. And you aren't able to change the HPF with common iron suspension because of the bodywork of the whole car is different and made just for the HPF. Hope I have one again someday..
I had an 88 SEL too. Until it saved my life. I got t-boned by a Volvo making a left turn. The Volvo was going around 50mph at the time of impact with no effort to brake. I spun and hit 2 more cars.
I always thought it would die when it hit 270k miles- it was at 215k. Instead it died saving my life.
If fuel economy is an issue, go for the Diesel models, which are in most cases cared for and keep up their market value quite well.
(One tip: the later diesel models had some engine issues that would cost a substantial amount of money to repair, please look into that, while buying one.)
Instead of choosing a 500 SE, choose a 280 SE ou 300 SE. Those are good engines and way less thirsty, but you still average 11.5 liters for 100 kms. A complete tank is about 90 liters of SP98.
Hi, you have a very nice car!. Would you tell me how much fuel it uses in 100km runing at 140km/h?I would like to buy a SE500 but fuel consumption would be a hard task to deal. what you think?thanks.
@pitcairn62 Thanks for your menssage. I plan to use the car weekly. Perhaps 1200km per month, so, fuel would be or would be not a issue. 12 liters per 100km, at 130km/h is fine. Would be worst?
@pitcairn62 The SDL's are extremely efficient. It's not unusual for us to get at least 530 miles on one tank. So if you want an efficient 126, get an SDL.
@thevlim Refitting a hydro system with normal shocks is relatively cheap. In fact, most people who have had the hydro when it failed generally replaced it with a normal suspension system. So it's really not that big of a deal.
@thevlim Not if doesn't make a difference to overall performance and makes a car easier to maintain, but that may be just my opinion. Btw, the hydro suspension was an option, not standard equipment, so to begin with the majority of w126's have the non hydro setup anyways. For example, my 126 has the factory setup with just normal shocks.
@benzlover55 Hi, you have a very nice car!. Would you tell me how much fuel it uses in 100km runing at 140km/h?I would like to buy a SE500 but fuel consumption would be a hard task to deal. what you think?thanks.
@GustavoMS40 I'm not sure where you live, but since you are using metric I'm guessing somewhere Europe right? My 126 is a Diesel, it has the OM603 engine that was only available in the US, mileage for the diesel is 30 miles per US gallon or so @ 100km/h if you watch the lead foot :) as for a 500SE, from what I know they get (at the same speed) only about 18-20 miles per US gallon, I don't know how that translates into imperial gals/liters...
@benzlover55 ´Thanks for your email. I am in Argentina, Rosario City. we use the same metric sistem that in Europe. I lived a couple of years in Columbus, Ohio, nice place to live.
@GustavoMS40 Was there any doubt in the first place? Come on, it was built in the 80's (AND it has a great whopping 5 liter V8)! No one really gave a damn back then about fuel econ and the people who bought these cars were generally millionaires, so no matter what, gas and the expense thereof was never a problem.
i want to buy one.. im a little strapped for $ and there are a few going for around $2500. i love these cars but is it honestly a mistake buying one ?
It's a toching video... I love my w126 too... I could never get rid of it... Obviously, you had the hydraulic suspension and it brought you problems... How many kilometers did you have ?
I am completely in love with the W126 Mercedes-Benz. My dad just bought an '87 420SEL, and I'm preparing to rebuild the engine in my '84 300SD. They are definitely excellent cars.
I had this car, already not manufactured cars so perfect

@GustavoMS40 If fuel prices are an issue to you do not buy an W126. It runs 5 km on one liter.
If you you buy it not for every day use it is a great car

Don't know why, but the W126 was never offered with a Diesel engine in Germany.
For export only, most of them went to USA.

hydraulic suspension is a nightmare when it breaks down. Parts are hard to get and expensive. If you want to buy a W126, avoid the ones that have it.
Also: putting LPG in a W126 V8 is asking for trouble. Unless you get an electronically controlled system.
A lot of good cars were killed by cheap LPG-conversions :(
