@FrenchValleyAirport this video was done over a year ago. ive used the genny many times since then and the noise has been reduced significantly.its so quiet that you can hear the hum of the actual generator. so im guessing that most of the noise is being muffled. im happy with it and its quiet enough for my liking which is what matters ,right?
@bctruck well im just saying that hose is too long, thats like put a 1 mile long hose and expecting the sound to reach the muffler. but if you like it ok...
@FrenchValleyAirport ive seen people who have ran far longer lengths of pipe to run the generator inside the garage and run the pipe under the door to exhaust to the outside. it seems to work for them as well. do you have a genny youve tried this on? do you have a vid? i scoured the internet to see what worked and what didnt before i decided to go this route. your not going to make it totally silent but you can go a long way towards reducing the noise .
@FrenchValleyAirport im telling you its not. i dont know how you can argue with me since you dont have this generator sitting in your shed like i do.your just imagining things and ive got physical proof that it works. why are you continueing this? if you can do something better, please do it and post a video. if you just want to argue about something i can prove works then i dont know what to tell you.
Okay, give me some plans on getting my air compressor to quiet down...good god!, - that blasted thing is so loud, one night while I was using an air chisel, Charlton Heston knocked on my door and said he along with the others wondered if I could turn the volume down some.
@backyardsounds man if you woke charlton, your compressor is reeeeeealy loud. mine is loud also but it doesnt run constantly so i can live with it. the only thing i can think of to remedy the loud compressor problem is to build a tiny buildin/closet up against the outside wall of your shop and moving it in there.
@bctruck its a really good setup, just that aluminum exhaust hose (or whatever it is) is too long, you should of just made an elbow and connected the cherrybomb all the sound is escaping that exhaust tube...
@bctruck what im saying is it might be quieter, but without that long ass extension it can be much much quiter, yeah it probably made it quite but what im saying is it can be better... anyways
ive got a genny like thismounted on my 18 wheeler, its too loud to run for very long, i think i'll put a muffler on it like you did! thanks for the info!
@chevynova7177 chevynova,,, id use quiet car muffler not the cherry bomb like i used. it would be quiter if you exited the exhaust under the truck towards the trailer. i know tghey are extremely expensive, but a honda generator is one of the quietest on the market. let me know how much differance a muffler makes. just got of the road after 30 years. driving in the oilfield now. take care...BC
hey bctruck - thanks so much for the "how to" video. my dad and i purchased a B & S 8,550W 10HP generator, and its loud enough to wake "The Dead"...... well, maybe not Jerry Garcia... BUT it is Deafening i really like the way you set up the mounting points for the muffler to move with the unit. my dad is 78 and he still would rather do it himself, than go to a Fabrication Shop... so this should be fun ! thanks again bctruck !
@walkingeagle069 im glad you found it to be useful. if i could do it all over i would go with a car muffler instead of the glasspack. its much quieter than what i did.
@bctruck paved road or civilization, and hope to freeze to death together in each others arms...... very, very sweet in theory but it would pain me greatly to find them like two "Popsicles" after a storm. we have a 300 gallon propane tank for a fuel source and if the Genny is QUIET enough as to not break the solitude, they promised me they would use it........ i hope they do, they were there for me when i was a boy (angels !) and i hope i can return the love...... thanks again, my friend...
@bctruck well, actually we did decide to upgrade (?) to a cheap Thrush muffler we found at Kragen auto parts for about 20 bucks, we were thinking that a fairly restrictive muffler would be an advantage even if we lose a little capacity. when we are finished, my father and i are going to install this Genny at my Great aunt and uncles cabin (they are both in their late 80s) in the mountains surrounding Lake Tahoe CA. they refuse to get even 1 inch closer to a (continued)
wow, a generator with a glasspack. :) i have a little 1200watt 2 stroke generator that only produces at least 50 DB. you can barely hear it from 20ft away. i bought it for $80 at the pawnshop.
1ce, I had a co-worker have their generator stolen. They hadn't used it in months but when they went to do maintenance, it was gone. They had it in a box, suspended 6 feet up in the air.
@KayakFisher01 I would love to know how Honda gets their generators SO SO quiet.
I wonder if the perforated metal panels vibrated with sound? In effect, taking the energy out of the noise. Or maybe the vibrations from the panels, made a "white noise" that canceled out the noise of the maintenance room.
Some1 put a Microphone in a box and then played the reverse sound outside the box. When the sound waves came together, it cancelled out the noise. Only thing heard was a little hum.
Thanks for posting the video. When the state built a new Conway Hospital in Monroe the walls and ceiling in the mechanical rooms on each floor were covered with perforated sheet metal. It was amazing how much quieter it made those rooms. Very little sound could be heard out in the hallway. I'm thinking of trying to make a "muffler box" using pegboard. I've picked up some ideas watching your video that I'm going to incorporate in my project.
@Steve9031 Peg board!!! Now that's interesting!! I hope you'll do a vid of the results. I'm not far from building a wood building to house the genny in a semi permanent way. I would love to know if the peg board is the way to go.
@sjjenkins11 i forgot this comment you posted . i was on the road at the time and my phone wouldnt let me reply. so anyway,,,, if you decide to try this let me know if there is anything i can do to help. if i could do this all over,,,i would use a baffled muffler not the cherry bomb type i used.i have a tractor muffler ill put on when i build my genny shed but im still working on some other more important projects.
@TheDisorderly1 I will do that when I get to building the sound proof shed for it. I think my db meter isn't correct. The generator is about half as loud as it was and apparently the db figures I gave, would make it nearly silent.
@bctruck I'm looking forward to the shed video. There isn't much information here on youtube about making a noise enclosure for a generator. I got a 6500w genny that I'm looking to build an enclosure for. I need to figure out how to make it secure as well as quiet. I also want to elevate the foundation slightly to keep it dry in the event of a flood. Ah well. Take care of yourself.
@TheDisorderly1 I to found very little info on adding a muffler and even less on a quiet shed enclosure. Much of what I'll be doing will be trial and error. I may get to it in the next 2 weeks. If you like I'll let you know when I get to using your channel email to alert you.
@ironhead41 no i dint need to gut it. the 2 1/2 inch nipple welded right over the exhaust port of that muffler with about a 16th to spare. i bought a new dented baffled muffler from a tractor supply today for 10 bucks (small dent)it fits an 8N. if this thrush muffler is to heavy i might put the 8N muffler on it.
you think the noise is going to be contained in the silver flexible exhaust pipe? its all going to dessipate before it reaches the exhaust
