doesnt dumi moi mean My thoughts. I am trying to learn Ukranian/Russian. I know conversational Russian. i really love this song. The reason i am learning Russian is to understand this song, and the Russian national anthem.

well actually, in ukrainian, "Dumy" has a double meaning. it means "Thoughts" but it is also a type of lyric song performed by the medieval traveling musicians, Kobzars.

Taras Shevchenko, the writer of "Dumy Moii" is said to be "one of the last Kobzars" not because he was a musician but because he spread the ukrainian culture during russian opression.

And at that time poetry was the new medium for traveling entertainment.

I'm an American and sorta by accident, I became friends with a guy who moved here from Ukraine. Out of curiosity, is it something in the cultural differences that teaches you to be superficial in conversations? Or maybe its just because I'm not that close of a friend? Definitely different mentality from what I'm used to.
