  • We love youuuuu :)

    Thank you

  • hey, what's that song? is it yours?

  • @BozoDel Hello! That's "The Get Song" which I wrote and recorded for this video!

  • @PrivateEnglishPortal That's good not just for studying, it's quite enjoyable. If all your songs are that good, I think you should get a bandcamp or something.

  • Is it true that English speaking people prefer using Phrasal verbs to Normal verbs?

  • @tongpeter2010 Yes, much better this way! More natural............

  • heloo..thanks a lot

  • why did the english people invent " phrasal verbs " , but you made it easier , thanks :D

  • man, I'm brazilian and I haven't seen a teacher like you before, you have talent to teach foreignes students, you really know how to do it...

  • Hello Steve your viedeos are very good!!!

Can you make a viedeo who you can teach us the TENSES!!

    Thanks mariomusik from Austria

  • great!!

  • Your videos are so helpful. Thank you Sir!

  • Great video Steve! Thanks for all of your videos!

  • Great Mr Steve i am srilankan i do learn english well from the videos that bublished by you.

  • I'd say that you could hear several variations with regard to word stress eg. FRUstrating

(US) vs. frusTRATing (UK). Although many words have certain variations between the US and the UK, I'd say in this case it depends on what you want to emphasize i.e. the VOLUME or the action of turning it DOWN. You could even say TURN the volume down. So you have a lot of flexibility here.

  • Hi Steve,

Thank you so much for all you Youtube lessons! I do have a question regarding the stress patterns of phrasal verbs. Sometimes I heard people say "Turn the volume DOWN" (stressing the particle)and sometimes "Turn the VOLUME down" (stressing the direct object). I think the Americans tend to go for the former while the Brits for the latter. Am I right? Do you normally put the stress/accent on the direct objects or on the particles?

    Thanks! Ken

  • thanks so much...your videos r really helpful

  • Hi missAlgerie1988!

    Ça va trés bien merçi!

    Thanks for the kind words!

I think that SOME idioms and particularly phrasal verbs can be heard in listening activities from TOEFL and IELTS as examples of how university students communicate with each other. Many times phrasal verbs can be found in this way at the academic levels of English.

  • hell steve! how r u?

I really the most thing I enjoy doin it is watchin ur lesson and u r awsome!

am a student of english and I am preparrin to graduate this year and to graduate I have to make somehow a lesson in my training module! so my quetion is that: r idioms so informal that I can't make them as lesson?

hope u get what am tryin to ask steve!

    thank you soooooooooooooo much

    my regards

  • Hello!

I am happy that this video was of some help to you in order to learn those phrasal verbs! My advanced students and I see phrasal verbs as a brick wall which we knock down 'brick by brick'.

    Best of luck!

    Steve

  • Hi, Steve. That video was fantastic. Im studying English, I am in a level PET(Cambridge). It was good to find something about the phrasal verbs.

    Congratulations!

  • Hi Steve,

    I'm from Brazil.

    I'm student of English....

This video was the first that I watched your.....

    It's good too much...

    Thank you!!!!

  • Thanks for clarification.

  • Hi Steve , thanks for your very useful lesson.

    I have a question:

if " get+verb" (eg. get sleep) is to used in past , then which part is to be turned into past. I mean whether I should use got sleep or get slept or got slept.

    thanks & regards

  • Hello! Hello! Hello! Mahmoodtube!

In this case 'sleep' is actually a noun(person, place, thing). We commonly say things like:

    Get some sleep! ( imperative)

Getting sleep is important. ( general statement)

So in this case you don't need to use the past participle 'slept'

    Regards,

    Steve

  • Hello Steve Peppy.

How are you?. It's a pleasure leave a comment here, specially watching your videos. I could learn much more with your classes and now i'm prepare to send a message for you and thank you to help me without know me!

    Thanks and tchau,

    Steve

  • Steve, thanks for your story to remember Phrasal verbs!

  • Thanks Mr Steve! Im a morrocan student and I hope I'll improve my english with Ur lessons...

  • Thanks! That's great and i hope you are learning a lot of things with my videos!

    Salam!

    Steve

  • What Video editing program do you use?

  • Maybe he's using After Effects.

Hello, this lesson was great, but I have a doubt about the pronunciation of 'a'. You said 'a' in two different ways at: 5:14 and then at 5:26. There's an special reason to do that?. I'm a Mexican learning English. Thank you so much.

  • Good question. The longer sounding 'a' is used more in formal speech whereas the shorter sounding 'a' is used in more semi-formal to informal speech. The same goes with 'the' and the longer sounding 'the'.

    Regards, Steve

  • Very clear, thank you so much!.

  • porque o senhor pronuncia ´´a`` como se fosse ´´ei``?

  • Mr. Steve, I am very happy to get your response. You are so thoughtful and very nice. Thank you very much for your teaching. I learn a lot. You are just like my guiding angel. Again ,THANK YOU!

  • enjoy learning. thnx!! ;)

  • You are very welcome!

  • Excellent. Thank you sir.

  • Thanks! You are very welcome!

  • i liked the video, it was a good anecdote to explain

i just have a question about the prepositions in phrasal verbs, do they have a general meaning with any verb? like up, out, in,on...

  • Thanks! I think that prepositions are one of the most irregular things in the English langauge. I talk about phrasal verbs and how each of the prepositions you've mentioned combined with a verb can change its meaning. Check out Peppy 18 where I talk about phrasal verbs of location and we can talk some more. Steve

  • very good video

  • Hi Metacafe8490! For sure we would like to do a Peppy world tour and come and visit you!

  • My Steve ! Why don't you come to VietNam once? I and my friend are looking forward to your coming ! Is it a good idea ?

  • I'm from Huflit University in HCM city, VietNam . After watching your english video, I find it interesting and easy to understand. Your menthod is really special because it makes me feel that I'm "playing and enjoying", not "learing". I've got big trouble with phrasal verbs and indioms. Now It's better ! Ilove you Steve !

  • Steve ! I love you !

  • thanx sir

  • hi sir thanks

  • I LOVE THE GET SONG!!!! HA!!!!

  • O que significa as expressoes : 'YO' e 'YA' ?

Eu amo suas aulas, você é o máximo! beijos

  • ya means you but It is a slang for example

see ya insted of say : see you

    or in america yo

    hey yo - hey you

  • Wonderful show!

  • not + either = neither

I've come undone = fall apart, lose control

    Regards and abrazo,

    Steve

  • Hi Steve! im Ezequiel, from Argentina!!!

and, i think u r amazing dude!!! a very good teacher!

i've a question.... (here we go)

how i have to use Either & Neither?, its not the same?

and also i'd like to know what does this phrase means....

    " Come undone " or " I come undone "

    as Robbie Williams' song says...

    i couldn't find the meaning!!!

    thank you!!!

  • Ah , you mean " let's get down TO business " . This means let's get started. It means let's get straight to the point.

  • Thank u soooooo much for this nice info ,sorry i have another question which is about quiz ,u always give us at the end of eposide ,what does it mean by "let's get down my business".believe me or not i try to look at my dictionary ,but i didn't find any thing.again thx, i appreciate ur efforts.

  • Ah this is really tricky. We commonly say ' got on the subway' or 'get on the subway train' . It would be wrong to say ' get in the subway', but you could say ' get in the subway car ' which is a specific part of the train. You can also say 'get on the tube' or 'get on the tube train'.

Other kinds of transportation vary; get in the car, get on the bike, get on/off the bus, get on a plane, etc

  • Really,it is amazing and i try to get used of all of these phrasal verbs during my life ,there are alot ,but actually they are useful and i think they make every thing easy.

But i have one question for u , u told us it is wrong to use get in the subway ,but we have to say get on the subway ,so i'm not gonna to use it all when i describing any of transportation right?? again thx 4 ur GR8 efforts Mr steeve.

  • Hello Anabel! Please check Peppy 11 for an explanation on ing adjectives. As I said in this video, most verbs that come immediately after a preposition take the verb + ing form.

    Regards,

    Steve

PS How's the weather down in Quito today ?

  • Hi Steve I'm Anabel from Quito Ecuador, I would like to know how to use ING in prepositions, verbs, adjectives, please I'm little confused :) Thanks

  • Hi Andrea, I know many of my students from France and italy take an English course in Ireland for a few months. I hope you are enjoying your self!

'I couldn't get a hold of her' means I was not able to contact her directly. You could also say 'I couldn't reach her '

    Have a wonderful day!

    Steve

  • Hi Steve, I'd like to congratulate with you for your videos, I'm Italian and I've been living in Dublin since last October to study for First Cambridge. I have a question: I couldn't get a hold of her. What does it mean? It's a very interesting sentence. Thank you very much for your help

  • great question! 'Let's get down to business' means let's start to talk about the main topic. It's a great way to make a transition from an introduction to the main topic.

So if you are having a meeting and everybody is talking about the weather, the CEO could say, 'ok let's get down to business'

  • Hi. Mr. Steve. This Persian Soheil.

Let's get down to business means to start up a business, right?

    What does it mean?

Please define and give me another example of this idiom.

  • Steve, I'm a Brazilian student and I have a "dúvida". If I write "I'm getting good (AT) English, It'll be correct? For me, the roght preposition in his case is "IN"

    Thanks 4 the patience. ^^

  • Thanks David!

Please say hello to your family and friends in Poland for me!

    Steve

  • Mr. Steve.

    ( bom feriado para você)

    Steve

  • Yes for sure! The TOEFL is for people who want to attend a university in the US or Canada as well as a few other universties in a few other countries( especially MBA programs). The SAT is strictly for the US ( to my knowledge).

    Regards,

    Steve

  • Hi Steve,

Could you advise me? What is better and give more opportunities? I have to pass TOEFL or SAT and I don't know what to choose?

  • Vancouver, Canada! Sunny today and mild for November! :)

  • Hi David! It's always great to hear from people from Spain! I have some online students from Madrid, Granada, Alicante, La Coruña, and a few others. That's great you have been to Vancouver. It's a great place to visit and study English at the same time.

Good luck on your job change! I have lots of students in the same boat. It's the new 'normal' nowadays! Remember 45 is the new 35!

    ( saludos desde Vancouver, Canada)

  • Hello Steve. My name is David. I`m from Madrid (Spain). I was in Vancouver last year in a English private academy for 3 months. I`ve decided to improve my english because I made redundant in my former job and I`ve free time now. I`ve a "little" problem. I`m 45. Anyway...Congratulations for your great job. Your videos are amazing!!!. You`ve a new friend in Madrid. Bye.

  • Hey Ginblog82 Thanks!

I really wanted to make something which could help everybody learn such a tricky topic. There is a definate influence from two composers in this song. One is Villa Lobos and the other is Roland Dyens.

I am happy you are enjoying my lessons!

Please say hello to all of your friends and family in lovely Italy!

    Steve

  • "The get song was written and performed by Steve Ford"... you are a f*ck*ng genius! :-) I really like this kind of music (and your lessons, of course), you could be a singer like... Michael Buble! All your lessons are great. Keep the good work. Best regards.

  • Thanks for the compliment tacio! May you reach the level in English you have always dreamed of!!!!!

Please say hello to your family and friends in Brazil!

    Steve

  • All I needed was online classes like these. I learn much more and of course, it´s much better to learn with a native speaker!

  • hmmm....very much the same weather here. I wish you the best of luck on your TOEFL test. If you need additional practise apart from my youtube videos you can always do the practise exercises on my website.

    Regards,

    Steve

  • In Poland today's cloudy and windy but it's not raining. But yesterday we had great weather: it was very sunny:)

I am preparing to TOEFL, too . Do you have maybe some materials which you could send me by email?

    Regards,

    Marcin

  • For sure! It's a great grammar point to cover!

What's the weather like in the south-western part of Poland today Marcin? Here it's raining and about 10 degrees celcius....

  • I am from Sycow this is south-western part of Poland. I'd be very grateful for this Peppy lesson.

    Regards,

    Marcin

  • Hi Albert,

    Thanks for your comment!

I have lived and visited countries in the past where I saw people who have very little money. I have also taught Canadian immigrants who were on welfare. Therefore, I have made my videos and ipod files free for viewing and studying online. I try to make as

  • much of my material as free as possible! I work full-time as an online English teacher, so I also offer VIP benefits for my private students. This way I am able to help you and help myself. It's a win/win situation.

    take care!

    Steve

  • Hi Steve,

I just wanted to congratulate you for teaching people through the widest mean. Internet. Specially Youtube as it is known in the whole world.

Well, I'm not good at English at all.

Everything I learned was by myself efforts by reading, listening to songs and watching to movies without subtitles.

I live in Sao Paulo, Brazil and I really wanted you to know that you should keep doing this. There are people just like me who doesn't have enough money to study it. Thanks.

  • Hi Marcin,

That's a great question as a lot of students get the causative (get/have + past participle) and passive tenses( some form of be + past participle) confused. Both are similar in that they both use the past participle of the verb. This is a great extension on the theme of get and I will strongly consider doing your Peppy question for Peppy 26.

What part of Poland are you from?

    Regards,

    Steve

  • Hi Steve, My Peppy question is: Could you tell me sth about "causative have" when we have use it and what exactly does it mean? Marcin, your student from Poland.

  • Hi seaisland321!

I enjoy making these lessons so much! It makes me very happy to know you are enjoying them too. I see you are from China! I have taught many many Chinese Canadian immigrants.

I learned a lot about your country from them.

Please say hello to all of your friends and family in China!

    Bye for now!

    Steve

  • it is very enjoyable for me to listen to your lessons.thank you so much for oferring to me.

  • For sure! that's in the Peppy future!

What part of Brazil do you live in ?

  • I live in São Paulo SP.

I got from your web site that you've taught

here as well as in Recife and others. it is great.

those pic your look is quite different ...

    long hair, style t-shirt. ( sorry )

    that's nice Steve.

    Eduardo Cassoli.

  • For sure! I lived and taught in many parts of your country! It was an amazing experience!

  • ok steve,

I know you've already been in lots of country,

if you have plans to travel to Brasil

to provide some conference or something like this; I would really like to go if possible

thank you for answering my coment below

    even a great teacher; you're a great musician;

    Cheerio

    Eduardo Cassoli.

  • hmmmm, could be made into an adverbial clause video using when as well as perhaps conditional 2. For sure, this could be the start of a great idea for a future Peppy!

    have a great day!

    Steve

  • I want my kids to discuss what they want to be when they grow up? Can u discuss that topic as central idea to any of ur video?

  • For sure ! I understand!

  • thanks I wish to learn more english

  • Hey iopkythowal,

I am so happy you have learned 'The Get Song' by heart. I promise to compose and record more music like this again. For sure for Peppy 25. I am filming Peppy 24 as we speak by the way!

    Have a great day!

    Steve

  • hey Steve; it's iopkythowal ...

    how are you doing? well,

I am writting this message because I'd ask you about something; ( 'if it's possible' )

I surely loved listening that piece of that move above where you got a song with those

phrasal verbs; it was amazing" wasn't it?

    I confess you I've already took it by heart;

so, would be possible to record something like this again?

    thank you Steve;

  • Hey Subersore!

Good questions! The first question was part of my bonus question quiz, right? 'Get accross your ideas' means to communicate your ideas, to make them understood by others.

The example for get around' is I get around town by subway. You are from Mexico. How do you get around when you are in downtown Mexico?

Say hello to all my good friends and students in Mexico!

    Steve

  • so get across my ideas is like what?

and get around means go to one place to another?

  • Hey Felipe! You are very welcome! I have taught both publicly and privately for 16 years and one thing that I have always wanted to do is to make something for my students which isn't just a page from a book, but also a page in the book of everybody's life.

please say hello to all of your friends and family in Chile!

    Steve

  • Steve, Thank you very much for your work. I think they are the best available videos in internet because they have the most innovative production (the subtitles with your pronunciation is the best idea). My best regards from Chile and i will continue learning from your videos.

    Felipe.

  • Hey ! I am so happy to hear from you again! How is the weather today in Vietnam?

    Steve

  • Thanks so much for your videos. They help me a lot.

  • Thanks so much!

    Ciao!

    Steve

  • Very good, 5*****!

  • Thanks iopkythowal,

You are so kind with the comment you left me! I am happy that you are learning so much from my videos. Drink from my fountain of knowledge my friend. There is plenty to go around!

    Keep playing that guitar!!!!!!

    Steve

  • the more I watch you movies the more I learn,

I tell you it's easier to 'get by' now than a couple of months ago; I've been trying 'to keep off' some mistakes and thank your movies

    now it is possible

    I've also been enhancing my vocabulary watching all over them; I am addicted on your movies; it's being my single-minded goal;

    thank you again; I am looking forward to your new movies;

  • Hi Susana!

Thanks for your comment! You all help me by posting wonderful comment which help motivate me to make more videos for you!

  • Thanks bejbus00,

I wanted to make something special so that everybody could remember my experience as if it were everybody's!

    Warmest wishes!

    Steve

  • Thanks Agnieszka!

I really enjoyed making this video! The music came from my memories of taking the subway in Paris back in 2000. I am so happy you enjoyed the video and were able to learn something in English.

    Take care!

    Steve

  • Thank you Steve, the video is marvelous!

  • Steve, the video is amazing! And the song - it's out of this world! The video doesnt only teach us some useful phrasal verbs but also tells us a bit about France! I'm impressed!

It's difficult to get across my feelings...

  • Thanks Kalleu! You are a reall 'early bird'

    Take care!
