RIP Fernando, you are missed so very much. I remember your eight hour workdays, your tenacity, dedication and good humor. Eras el mejor baliarín de ballet que dio Cuba y este pais, por no decir el mundo.
her technique and balances are flawless, but i especially love how they both remain in character, as two young people on their wedding day dancing together. even during her balances they are smiling and connecting with each other
Sorry to say but after I saw Viengsay Valdes in Barcelona, Spain I doubt we could even mention any other dancer in Don Q since Viengsay's Kitry superes anyone else's.
@Aleezabeth If you want to see Gregory balance, do view vaimusic channel's clip of Don Q PDD w/Bujones. In fact, I think that PDD was a rehearsal and featured on the same DVD as this Coppelia clip . Whatever, I have never seen a Kitri so perfectly executed. Gelsey, Makarova & Harvey were great, but after watching Gregory's DonQ, she was understated and crisp enough not to need to schmalz up the role as do many who dance the role. Enjoy (as I did!)
Ms. Gegory was from a different time period than Rojo. Enjoy both for their incomparable qualities. For fun, watch the Danilova films by Zachary Solov. There, you will see Madame Danilova's charm and everything else. You will not need to just look at steps. Enjoy.
Both had amazing technique, line and artistry! Cynthia's balance en point is legendary. Fernando's partnering skill was only exceeded by his BRILLIANCE as a solo danseur noble when the choreography called for it... long, clean line ('legs for days!'), strong feet (the height of his jetes defied gravitry... perfectly controlled landings), beautiful body positions achieved with flair... iconic danseur for the ages!
CYnthia Gregory was truly amazing. Her balances of more than 2 sec. have not been equalled since. She was 6 ft. on pointe. And so beautiful on stage. What a treat ABT was in those days. But it is still a wonderful company, in spite of the NY Times dance critic, McCauley. He laments their "old fashioned" repertory. Obviously thousands of New Yorkers prefer this to countless more Robbins and Balanchine ballets.
In recapping the entire year, though, Macaulay has really changed his tune - gave a rave overall review of ABT in a recent NY Times issue...especially of particular dancers such as Cornejo. His only real criticism was Le Corsaire, which is understandable - ABT are above that nonsense.
Yes, I agre that he gave the good review, AFTER the season was over and he had over criticized so much of ABT, as he does year after year. As for Le Corsair, The Kirov and Paris Ballets have both given it sumptuous productions in the past few years, and I really don't see what is wrong with an audience having a good time at a ballet, which Corsair certainly does.

In spite of being an abolutely wonderful dancer, I don't think that Gregory was as steady as Rojo.
As for Bujones, nothing need be said - he was so perfect!!
