@ everybody, here and elsewhere: please try and have a bit of humour... I love to comment videos and discuss catches and featherings, but I'm growing tired of people getting angry and saying shut-up-hes-faster-than-you, and dont-comment-on-technique-you-fools, and all this (not meaning you, xmcenigma: you were polite, which makes you stand out from the average). This is not a war; or if it is, I'm not fighting it. Relax.
@xmcenigma: ...but now please let old amateurs like me go, and get to the real issue: __Peter Michael Kolbe does not catch perfectly, he *is* The Catch__, 80's or what. And I won't concede anything on this ;^)
@xmcenigma: his catch *is* good, *can be* better, and this is just MHO. Might take less frames and go more bow-wise, at least as far as Thor Nilsen's and Gianni Postiglione's lessons back then go... but OK, this was actually the 80s. As for comparing me to a world class athlete who just set the WBT etc. etc., thank you for your support but I've been retired for 20 years now. Your comments on my videos are welcome and mostly right, I tend to use too much wrist because I currently row sweep.
half the people here putting this man down and commenting on his technique are probably trying to make themselves feel better due to their slopping sculling. shut up, he could beat all of you by a long distance, AND HE'S HOT!
@theSculler His catch timing is great, as is indicated by the back-splash visible when his blade passes the camera during the drive, the fact that the splash goes in both directions shows excellent timing. If he caught the water earlier there would be less/no forward splash and he would be checking the run of the boat. Why would he square earlier? His blades enter the water square, therefore he looses no power in the drive, squaring earlier would only increase wind resistance and slow him down.
@theSculler And peter Michael Kolbe rowed macon blades, rowing technique has been improved since the 80s and evolved with the technology available today.
Also, looking at your videos you should be careful about hunching your back at the catch, and "pushing the pram" on the recovery, your using to much wrist when you feather, it's inefficient and hinders a balanced recovery in a boat which is properly rigged. Try using a little wrist, and mostly your fingers, a good example can be seen above.
Anyone find they break the arms sooner while sculling? I have more sweep experience and I never do this while sweep rowing but in sculling it just feels right :?
Whatever some think that Dan appears to be doing in slo-mo, you should know that he stroked the Aussie mens quad to the worlds fastest ever quad time in Beijing in 5'.36", and the NSW mens 8 to a win in a record time of 5'.22" in the Australian Championships on 13/3/2010, so I suggest look at the good in what he does, knowing that boats that he strokes can go seriously fast on the world stage
the movement of the legs in coordination with the arms....the control of the body needed to perform this sport is amazing to me....i Have to do this....zone girl
i just had my first sculling class and was not awesome... lol. i seem to have a hard time coordinating my legs and arms and oars all at the same time, so being able to watch this is helping me get sorted out.

He is good. It's a pity he doesn't square earlier and catch with the hands still travelling sternwise*: he'd be even better.
* best example ever, probably: Peter Michael Kolbe

@garymacmillan He's taking the blades out square, and then taking his time squaring them.
