Can anybody tell me the name of the woman who sang this when they performed in Chicago at the Aragon (July 25)? Her vocals made this song even greater!!
first time i've heard them, checking them out cuz i heard they are on Austin City Limits this weekend. THEY ARE BEYOND AMAZZZZZZZING!! (and while I like most music to one degree or another), I dont say that very often. Luv them!!
This CD is so good it blew my mind the first couple times I listened to it....I love CD's that can just keep playing and you dont know when one song ends and next one starts....Maybe the album of the year when its all said and done!
I don't see it. Decemberist are in a minor key and Dream is really hard to tell. Also this start from a cubic melody while dream starts with the harmony. The tempo is faster in dream.
The vocalist for Margaret is Becky Stark, of the band Lavender Diamond. The vocalist for the Forest Queen is Shara Worden, of the band My Brightest Diamond. All of which can be verified EVERYWHERE on the internet. Jeez.
can someone please tell me what the name of the female vocalist is! she is effin' out there amazimg + a big range. i'm not really into the story thing...a lot of lilstening to t get to the good stuff, but whoever the woman singer is blows me away, crazy good
Becky Star- look her up here on youtube. My daughter hadn't heard the album ( I kept it from her) first time was live a Bonaroo. She called during this song to say how incredibly blown away by the visuals and the her stage presence. My daughter said it was the best concert she'd attented (and she goes to a LOT) esp amazing as it was first time she'd heard the music.
I heared thisd badn before, but didnt really start to get into them until I recently read the article about them in Paste. I hav6ta say I think they are amasing!
Everyone has their own opinion about which album is the best. I do think Picaresque is very well done, but I enjoy Castaways and Cutouts a lot more. I have friends who prefer Hazards of love most or Cranewife. Every album has its own style and people pick what appeals to them most.
It's so blues-y. I love it. I personally love the blues AND the Decemberists and it really shows you how musically diverse and talented this band is. The new album is simply amazing.
This is a great song, but there is nothing remotely blues-like about it. When we say "blues" are we talking about the same style of music? I'm referring to artists like Robert Johnson and John Lee Hooker, who have nothing in common with this.
i love these guys! the decemberists are awesome, im just listening to the older albums such as picaresque and castaways and cutouts and all of the songs before cranewife. this is the 7th time ive listened to this album and im in love!
I always hoped the decemberists would come out with a concept album because they know how to tell stories in their songs. after hearing "A mariners revenge song" i knew i wanted a whole album dedicated to a story intertwined
It's called a Rock Opera, or a Concept Album. A Rock Opera is an album where all of the songs connect and have different characters, and an overarching story. Musical is used for a Movie... you can't say Music is a Musical.
This is actually a folk opera, not rock. But the origin of musical is to be acted out on stage not for a movie. I see what you're saying with the whole "overarching story". I've just wanted to write a Decemberists Musical forever. It would have SUCKED for them to have beat me to the punch
rock opera more or less applies to any kind of non-classical opera. and i agree, if you're going to call the distorty bits rock, then they have to be classic-metal style blues-rock.
This w/ Sara Watkins was the most amazing thing I've ever seen.

There are so few modern vocalists who use primarily soprano; Becky sounds so lovely and innocent...even though a virgin she ain't, hehe!

The Crane Wife really went for the more rock approach.. I have to say the only song I liked from The Crane Wife was The Island and The Crane Wife..
the rest I thought were completely not The Decemberists I fell in love with.

Crane Wife is easily the worst album they've ever made. This is miles above it, but still not as good as Castaways and Cutouts.

Yes, of course it's not a rock opera, that's why there are hard, distorted guitars.
dreddiefleming 2 years ago
Actually, the hard, distorted guitars seem more blues than rock, to me.

The Decemberists pretty much defy categorization. They borrow bits and peices from several genres.

There's no need for categorizations and arguments, my friends, because we all agree on the main facts.
They are the Decemberists...and they ROCK!!!
