well it is true since u dont make money off of it, it is not violating any copyright laws...but one big thing is copywrited laws is, "Copyright laws are violated if the owner of the subject files a complaint and/or the violater takes the credit for the subject that the owner already has legal rights for it." so your not really violating anything cuz ur not saying those are ur songs. I'm so sorry to hear this! I'm in an ITP and love your videos as they are so well done. I have my vids on blogspot. the only issue i've ever had there is it takes a bit longer for me to upload the vids than it does for youtube. maybe give it a try though?
if you say that itss a cover of a song and that you dont own the rights to the song then usually you can keep your videos thats what my friend did with his band
Ally, if this becomes a problem again contact the labels saying, "If you have any objections to my use of your copyrighted songs in my asl videos, please contact me, otherwise I will consider your lack of contact as your consent to continue use."
Then if YouTube has any problems you can tell them that you contacted the labels and they had no objections.

You tell Youtube that alot of people from my signing class in school enjoyh watching you videos because they help us learn more words brfore our teacher teaches them to us.
I can hear and speak and i'm LVL 1 ASL and i find that your videos have help me remember anh learn new words that even my teacher said i wasn't ready to learn yet. I've been having thoughts about learning ASL lately, but I am very unsure of how to start, WHERE to start, and how to stay committed. Do you have any advice for me?
@AllStarCheerleader17 an easy way that i started was go to a book store and buy an ASL Dictionary it helped me alot and if you know anyone that is deaf they are almost always willing to help you lean and teach you.

You could lable the songs as 'covered' (someone other than the singer is singing the song). When you search for a song on youtube, there are always others labeled this way. If youtube is willing to delete you just because you are singing in a different language- well that is discrimination. try that one on for size you tube!
I am a new student to asl... your video's are teaching me how to use asl... I am an older (51) student so its not easy to learn a new language.... I hope my saying how much you and those doing what you do help the students of asl helps your case....
I know from dancing that if you include the name of the song in the title or description it will be deleted or muted much faster than if it is not included. Will all of you videos now be going up on facebook instead?
Just upload them without the music. If we need the music with your video we can listen to it from our personal library while you sign, that way you're not infringing.

I know its alot to do, but maybe if you asked the artists on FB or twitter to for the okay to post their songs? maybe the label will allow the vids to stay? its a long shot. good luck in everything.
I assume this is (mostly) resolved at this point? I think some of the big 4 labels have licensing deals with Youtube now, but they're still scanning videos for copyrighted audio. Unfortunately it's a completely automated system, and can't take into account fair use (which you might be able to claim for your videos).
The Viacom v Youtube lawsuit is picking up speed, though, which will very likely have ramifications on which songs people can use in videos.

That's sad. I'm a big fan of your song-asl videos. At least though, you're not violating any copyright law. That's the first priority and you'll be conforming to it. I'm sure you'll be able to outlet your passion in other ways you also love.
my friend and i make music videos to songs and we have never gotten in trouble. she uses the names of the songs in the title, but what she does is put in the description "disclaimer i do not own the rights to this music" or something like that. i know thats what a lot of people do and they have all been fine. maybe you should try that, really hope it helps. ur amazing and i dont want any of ur vids to get deleted..id cry =[
hey, you could just sing any songs, but remmy you need to put " " of whom wrote the songs so that you didnt copy thier songs, you are translating their songs into ASL...You did good job...Keep up, and dont give up....Smile

By putting the song title & singer name was merely to inform & respect the patents of original singer without any copyrights. I have learned alot from your youtube with your illustration moves in ASL. I pray youtube won't delete your account., because your account was my only source to educated myself using ASL. ally if i were you i would do a petition., demanding that your video's stay stating these are for educational and ASL benefit only and also stat the fact that well over 90% of youtube videos have music in them and if they want to delete video's with music in them tell them to go after all the 14-16y/o shaking their asses on webcams
and if all the other great idea's dont work u could always track down the artist's on facebook and via their websites and ask for there permission and just let them know u dont make any money off it it is justy something u enjoy doing as it allows the deaf community to experiance their music i dont think i would go on youtube anymore if they removed ur vids because i think u are an insperation( think i spelt it rite)
I really think you should just start a petition. You would have a strong argument and a lot of followers. this is a great way for the deaf culture to get to expirience song. I would certainly sign a petition for such a cause. if they are allowing some of your songs to remain online then there is obviously a way around it. You see songs on youtube ALL the time with lyrics. As long as you say "I do not own any of the lyrics or music in this video - etc etc" there should not be an issue at all.
Maybe try set up at your own website so that way they have no power to delete yours, except yours. I watch this guy who does sing in asl. he have same plm. I suggest you check this one one under Stormfx in youtube.

I hope they don't remove all videos of people sharing musical talents. That would mean they will erase my Grandson singing Dave Matthews (Ants Marching). Imagine how many videos would have to be removed from You Tube. People don't make money from these videos they are ust sharing and your videos are amazing and I am a hearing person. Just came across this video. If youtube doesn't pan out, there are other websites. deaf-tube . com is one where I used to post. You could always create a blog on blogspot or wordpress and post videos directly there.

You Tube would find it hard to carry on if copyright was used, the simple act of copying the name You Tube in the web address bar is an act of copyright, the name is not ours, but we copy it all day here. I have read you upsetting news; I feel that anyone in the right frame of mind would see most clear what you are doing in your life. Beethoven was one of the very first, and so may great song writers have been deaf and they gave, but never hearing the song.
Many have forgotten in this day and age the very thoughts of life, and how we live with fellow humans. To say a simple word of hello whos copyright then is that. You have always shown the artist name and song writer. Lets look at what you do for one moment, you open a window to many peoples lives, which would not be able to share in the great works of song writers, and hear songs and share what the singer is singing and you teach. You open a window in to the lives of many all over the world.
maybe what you could try doing is getting permission for using the songs that you sign. It is fairly quick and easy, my mom had to do the same thing for her youtube videos because she uses bellydancing music in hers. So maybe do that?

If they delete any or all of your videos..please find another way to share them. You have not only helped me advance in asl..but given my husband and i a chance to enjoy something together . My husband is deaf and i am hearing...I cannot express how it feels to be able to enjoy a song or a feeling with music for the first time. yes there are many videos out there..but few of this quality. You have truely brought our cultures together and gave us one more thing to enjoy together as a couple!
I know what you have to do to save yourself....all you have to do is write in the comment box and/or during your video that you dont own any of the songs or music and that they belong to "insert companies name here"!!!!!

I hope you don't get deleted. I really enjoy your videos. I love music but since I'm hard of hearing I can never understand the words in songs. So I like to watch videos of music with ASL so I can understand the songs. ASL music videos put me on an equal level with everyone who is hearing and can hear the words in the music. And your videos are really good because you are so expressive unlike many other hearing people who sign songs. Keep up the good work. I will pray that you don't get deleted.

I have just discovered your videos today and have a suggestion. Since youtube is not the owner of anyof these songs, you are not infringing on them, so maybe you should contact the labels of the songs that you have posted to date and see if given the circumstances they would be wiling to give you something in writing to let youtube know that you are okay to post these songs in ASL. Just a thought! I would be willng to help you in this effort please let me know.

Well So far so good, i still see her account up and running. But its very weird. she puts up teh copyright and everything. says anything she signs isn't of her own. and there's nothing, i mean nothing wrong with her ASL. why would they tell her that?

You should try to explain that the video are simply for the deaf to learn how the songs goes. Like when you sign, the deaf can feel from the person siging is like listening to the songs. My daughters and I are all learning ASL. They are 8, 10 and 12 and I'm, well, too old to tell my age. We are learning on our own with books and videos. Your songs are a huge help and my girls love them because they give us the "feel" for ASL, not just individual signs. I hope you stay with us.
just get permission from the people then i am sure you be fine. if u can't do songs then try to do some real live conversations with your friends in asl so people can learn it be more fun!

I was #355 on the petition. You are the best signer I have seen on Youtube thus far--I actually refuse to watch anyone else because thier signing isn't nearly as clear and "pronounced" as yours is.
And for someone with a decent knowledge of Pidgin, and is trying to learn Pure ASL, your videos are essential to me. So keep up the good work, and I hope they don't shut you down.

I'm glad to see that I have so many people standing behind me and supporting me in my quest to have Deaf rights for ALL music, not just songs that do not fall under the Warner Music Group label. :)
I wonder if the music industry realizes what idiots they are. YouTube has been a way for them to reach the Deaf community... I have many Deaf friends who have now subscribed to things like iTunes or gone out and bought CDs of songs they have seen interpreted on YouTube. The music industry is making money off this! What idiots. Please let me know if I can be of any help! (I have had one of my own videos removed due to copyright claims on the song.)

You could lable the songs as 'covered' (someone other than the singer is singing the song). When you search for a song on youtube, there are always others labeled this way. If youtube is willing to delete you just because you are singing in a different language- well that is discrimination. try that one on for size you tube!

Ok this is crazy. There are deaf people out there that need this. I for one need it.
Other youtubers are allowed to download or uploads songs and make there own captions. This is for educational reasons for "the deaf community".

I assume this is (mostly) resolved at this point? I think some of the big 4 labels have licensing deals with Youtube now, but they're still scanning videos for copyrighted audio. Unfortunately it's a completely automated system, and can't take into account fair use (which you might be able to claim for your videos).
The Viacom v Youtube lawsuit is picking up speed, though, which will very likely have ramifications on which songs people can use in videos.
Moral of the story is, blame the RIAA.

my friend and i make music videos to songs and we have never gotten in trouble. she uses the names of the songs in the title, but what she does is put in the description "disclaimer i do not own the rights to this music" or something like that. i know thats what a lot of people do and they have all been fine. maybe you should try that, really hope it helps. ur amazing and i dont want any of ur vids to get deleted..id cry =[

By putting the song title & singer name was merely to inform & respect the patents of original singer without any copyrights. I have learned alot from your youtube with your illustration moves in ASL. I pray youtube won't delete your account., because your account was my only source to educated myself using ASL. I really think you should just start a petition. You would have a strong argument and a lot of followers. this is a great way for the deaf culture to get to expirience song. I would certainly sign a petition for such a cause. if they are allowing some of your songs to remain online then there is obviously a way around it. You see songs on youtube ALL the time with lyrics. As long as you say "I do not own any of the lyrics or music in this video - etc etc" there should not be an issue at all.

I hope they don't remove all videos of people sharing musical talents. That would mean they will erase my Grandson singing Dave Matthews (Ants Marching). Imagine how many videos would have to be removed from You Tube. People don't make money from these videos they are ust sharing and your videos are amazing and I am a hearing person. Just came across this video. If youtube doesn't pan out, there are other websites. deaf-tube . com is one where I used to post. You could always create a blog on blogspot or wordpress and post videos directly there.

maybe what you could try doing is getting permission for using the songs that you sign. It is fairly quick and easy, my mom had to do the same thing for her youtube videos because she uses bellydancing music in hers. So maybe do that?

My husband is deaf and i am hearing...I cannot express how it feels to be able to enjoy a song or a feeling with music for the first time. yes there are many videos out there..but few of this quality. You have truely brought our cultures together and gave us one more thing to enjoy together as a couple!

I hope you don't get deleted. I really enjoy your videos. I love music but since I'm hard of hearing I can never understand the words in songs. So I like to watch videos of music with ASL so I can understand the songs. ASL music videos put me on an equal level with everyone who is hearing and can hear the words in the music. And your videos are really good because you are so expressive unlike many other hearing people who sign songs. Keep up the good work. I will pray that you don't get deleted.

I have just discovered your videos today and have a suggestion. Since youtube is not the owner of anyof these songs, you are not infringing on them, so maybe you should contact the labels of the songs that you have posted to date and see if given the circumstances they would be wiling to give you something in writing to let youtube know that you are okay to post these songs in ASL. You should try to explain that the video are simply for the deaf to learn how the songs goes. Like when you sign, the deaf can feel from the person siging is like listening to the songs. I use music on my videos and they don't get mad at me just so long as I give credit to the title and artist of the song I used in the info section so they know I'm not claiming it. Maybe if you tried that they'd get off your back? :-/

My daughters and I are all learning ASL. They are 8, 10 and 12 and I'm, well, too old to tell my age. We are learning on our own with books and videos. Your songs are a huge help and my girls love them because they give us the "feel" for ASL, not just individual signs. I hope you stay with us.

just get permission from the people then i am sure you be fine. if u can't do songs then try to do some real live conversations with your friends in asl so people can learn it be more fun!

You got to get permission from the artists I guess.
That's hard to do.
Mabye can ask a few artists in myspace if they would allow you to do that. I suspect most will.

You might want to do a little research and consider having your videos hosted at another site. There's more to the internet than youtube.

First-I love watching your videos! I hope they are not deleted. You've helped renew my interest in signing after a 10 year lapse!
Anyway, I really fail to see how youtube can come after you. Until they remove every TV show, movie clip, and music video, as well as fan videos that use images from shows/movies and/or songs as background music, I really fail to see how they can justify coming after you specifically. Here's hoping they relent!

i cant belive that they want to take her off it helps deaf people enjoy the things that hearing people have and if they dont understand that i dont know what this world is coming to im am only a freshman in high school and i understand the importance that her sighning has it is a shame that others dont have the intelagence i do when it comes to this!!

I was #355 on the petition. You are the best signer I have seen on Youtube thus far--I actually refuse to watch anyone else because thier signing isn't nearly as clear and "pronounced" as yours is.
And for someone with a decent knowledge of Pidgin, and is trying to learn Pure ASL, your videos are essential to me. So keep up the good work, and I hope they don't shut you down.

It is sad that some in the music industry don't really understand the value of having their music popularized on YouTube.
I would never have heard of Jason Mraz if I didnt watch yours and my son Aarons creative video.
As an example, I went and bought this song from iTunes and now listen to it on my iPod. How many others are doing the same?

I'm glad to see that I have so many people standing behind me and supporting me in my quest to have Deaf rights for ALL music, not just songs that do not fall under the Warner Music Group label. :)

I wonder if the music industry realizes what idiots they are. YouTube has been a way for them to reach the Deaf community... I have many Deaf friends who have now subscribed to things like iTunes or gone out and bought CDs of songs they have seen interpreted on YouTube. The music industry is making money off this! What idiots. Please let me know if I can be of any help! (I have had one of my own videos removed due to copyright claims on the song.)
