I saw this production 7 times (front-row rush tix!!!) and the only one in this video that sounded the same live is Mimi. No, she wasn't vocally strong some of the time, but she was definitely an actress. That's not to say her singing was terrible, in fact, I recall loving the way she sang the ballads. Her voice had a beautifully dark quality to it. Her "Out Tonight" was never vocally great but she still drew loud cheers from the crowds. It just worked.
I could be wrong, but I think that for publicity videos (like the footage of Mimi in the beginning of this piece) The actors are singing w/o accompaniment-or if the music is coming through the earpieces that they wear with the microphones.. didn't see a mic in that clip so I don't know how true it is in this case.
I'm a singer myself, and I KNOW that it's really hard to sing A Capella on some songs.
If you look at the New York promo videos, they sound a little "off' too...
@WhisperLuna No this is not the case at all. Unfortunately, promo shoot calls are typically early in the morning. Which is usually why people sound not 100%. Plus, usually there are multiple takes, different angles, all kinds of things.

It's kind of weird because this clip does not do them vocal justice. They were very strong live.
