This is such a great impromptu idea. Of course it depended quite a bit on the signer but that was part of the risk Birbiglia took, and so the genius. Of course I'm sure he's a good judge of people as well, and this woman was perfect.

I am glad I read the comments, because I was watching this with the sound off and getting really mad at the interpreter. There were a lot of times where she was laughing with the comedian, but NOT interpreting what the two of them said. So, now that I know it was unplanned and there were no deaf people there, that's better. :-) It reminds me to interpret EVERYTHING when I am in a similar situation.

I think the person meant that there were in between moments where he wasn't telling the joke but was talking to her asking what she's doing or whatever and she's not signing that. She's a good interpreter, but, seems like if there were actually Deaf people in the audience that she would definitely want to explain or at least interpret in between bits too.

no she was not, if you are an interpretor you would know. he is talking to her and she signs nothing. i would hate having her as an interpretor. i'm not saying she is a bad one, just she might be new, and does need work.

there is no story. when he is talking directly to her she does not sign. there is no story about it, and if she were to sign faster then him speaking that would be wrong for an interpretor. they usually sign behind, sometimes on time with but never, NEVER, faster then the speaker.

The interpreter has good skills, but she didn't interpret all the times that Mike talked to/about her. People are laughing, she's laughing, and the deaf people won't know why...unless she knows there's no deaf in the audience?

This is my wife, I just wanted to clarify, she was working at the club as a waitress and was pulled on stage by Mike and asked to interpret for him. There were no deaf people in the audience, and there was no prep time either. She also was not aware that there was a taping or that it would end up on youtube. She is just a friend of Mike's and he thought it would be funny to do this with her.
